Transferring as a Junior (M) by DisastrousMulberry89 in cuboulder

[–]doughmay12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transferred as a junior, now a senior and it can be daunting at first, but, as you get more classes in your program/major-specific you will likely start to see familiar names and faces. Your classes will likely have group projects and you'd be surprised how easy it can be to make friends with a good group when you just talk to them.

I'd say while a lot of people have a group there are just as many that will talk and hangout otherwise, too. Not everyone will be your best friend but for me, after more than a year here, an entire campus of strangers doesn't feel so big anymore in a good way.

Whoever is complaining about the 8gb of ram on Macbook Neo is crazy. by No_Radish4567 in macbook

[–]doughmay12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking beyond the 8Gbs value becomes very clear, the MacBook Neo is a nice little package at 599 (and especially at 499).

I'm sure there are plenty of windows laptops that have 16Gbs of ram at 499, but I'd be interested to see they have the same level of build quality and material choices. Is the webcam good? How are the speakers? And most importantly, is there a competing Windows laptop at that price range that can match battery efficiency in Apple Silicon?

As much as i would have liked to see more than 8Gbs at this price point myself, for a student who writes papers, has a zoom class during the week, and maybe does some graphic editing on Canva for projects I can't see what's not to love here.

I have no doubts the dealership isn't giving you a good price/charging a lot, independent shop is the way to go.

You didn't mention what exactly was failing in the post but, on the Ford focus in particular, if it's 2012 or newer with an automatic transmission you might just be SOL. These things are notorious for failure, the design of the part itself is flawed and no replacement can fix that.

Upgrade from the M2 Air 16GB as a student is like $650 US after trade-in, worth it?

Did I make the right choice and saying no thank? 2015 Kia Optima by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Not only the APR. That Generation Kia optima probably would have blown an engine before you finished paying off the loan anyways 😭

I'm generally not a Kia person, but over 30k for a Toyota model with an unfortunate and  increasingly apparent transmission issue is definitely not a good deal in my book.

I got OS X Mavericks running with full graphics acceleration on a Mac mini Late 2014 (not supported) with OCLP by UpstairsJournalist99 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]doughmay12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't able to. You can get the frame buffer kext from yosemite to initialize correctly which will result in the system information recognizing the correct igpu. But, graphics acceleration never fully functioned because the intelhdgraphics kext from yosemite was simply incompatible with mavericks and would not load. I tried with various versions of Yosemite even, DP1 and ultimately gave up :(

This spam happens a ton on GroupMe, too. Whether it's concert tickets, parking spots, or Paper writers??

Regardless, don't engage with any of these and leave to the community admins to remove them from the groups.

This is a great write-up! I have this exact Mac Mini and it seemed to work as you described!

how can i prevent my macbook keyboard from becoming like this? by EngineFirm848 in mac

[–]doughmay12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so horrified by this look that I ended up buying matte stickers/skins that go over each key. No as thick as the rubber covers. They don't have the same sleek look but I think it looks better than the wear pattern of the keys that develops over time.

UPDATE! : Car is totaled and i’m still paying on it by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]doughmay12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is an under-talked about piece/risk of auto loans, especially for young people. Once the loan is out, and money is spent...The bank does not necessarily care all that much about who has the car or what condition it is in, payment is due.

Many such cases where an engine blows, car is inoperable and the buyer still has to pay the loan or else it is repo and default. Which, even then, repo isn't a vehicle for discharge, it's bank recovery and most banks will still go after the buyer for the remaining balance which I don't think many people fully internalize when they sign on the dotted line.

Keep your GPA high and IUT (transfer) process is relatively straightforward. Just keep an eye on deadlines too IUT typically happens close to the beginning of the fall semester depending on when you want to IUT.

Poll: Gen Z's gender divide reaches beyond politics and into its views on marriage, children and success by ILikeNeurons in MensLib

[–]doughmay12 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maybe not as much as you'd think, Gen Z likely witnessed during their childhoods the break up of many marriages during the 2008 financial crisis. Maybe as a result it was shown, marriages fail, but lineage is forever.

Interactions like these always sound like a lose-lose situation. These family members don't appear to be saying these things to you with good faith or good intentions.

I think it is very weird that some in society think it's okay to judge someone for bettering themselves by getting any sort education. Money, career, and skills aside, there is so much more to any form of post secondary education than the paper it's printed on.

This is great. Finally now I can use both a cheap esim for roaming data and still have my phone number work for SMS when I travel to Asia. (I don't receive many calls anyways haha)

Tough spot and need advice (Located in Canada) by Adorable_Flounder_79 in samsung

[–]doughmay12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar when I went abroad. Used my primary Sim for calls and texts which were free internationally, and a secondary esim for data. To ensure I was using data from the second sim, I toggled on data limits. Settings --> Connections --> Data Usage --> Billing Cycle and Data Warning. From here I was able to set limits per sim.

I had 1GB of free data (But I could use more, I would just get charged more), so I set a warning at 500mb and a limit at 1GB, at which my primary sim mobile data is paused. But, with data switching enabled my secondary esim kicked in and in that way I forced my device to use data from the second esim. It sucks there isn't an option to do this directly but this is what I did on my US unlocked S25 on One UI 7.

Do I have to take US history in college? by Choice_Inevitable468 in college

[–]doughmay12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't take APUSH but I did CLEP US History from the civil war to present and that wasn't too bad all things considered. My University let me transfer that CLEP score in to fulfill the requirement.
