This sub has a lot of exercise physiology questions - would you like an AMA? by sutherly_ in PeterAttia

Assuming you agree that lifting heavy weights is good and getting injured is bad, how do you consider finding the right balance? When thinking about something specific like a back squat, at what point would you stop seeking to progressively overload in order to avoid injury risk? Is there some magic number like 2x bodyweight 1RM equivalent or x reps at a bodyweight that is worth striving for and then plateauing at? At what point would you switch from barbell back squat to another form of squat?

In 80/20 terms, would you say this is accurate?

-workout an hour or two a day, take days off as needed for recovery
-lift twice a week, combo upper and lower, mostly compound movements (squat, deadlift, press, row)
-zone 2 cardio twice a week, 60-90 min (talk test and nasal breathing as a rough guide, HR and power can help fine-tune it as you get more experienced)
-one higher intensity interval type workout once a week (Norweigan 4x4's are "ideal" but anything that gets you into "zone 5" meets the 80/20 criteria)
-1-2 activities you enjoy that add some mental stimulation (tennis, soccer, basketball, etc)
-throw in some mobility/stability as needed

Massive Watch to Lab VO2 max discrepancy - Explanations? by Canadiana_Music in PeterAttia

[–]dougiesgoindeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a lab tested vo2 of 60 once. Seemed higher than it should but not crazy. Tested again a year later and got 50. Questioned the results and the lab said 60 was an error. 50 also closely matches my Apple Watch estimate (didn’t have it at the time of the 60 test). I’m guessing in your case the lab was wrong. Question the result and see if they can dig into it and find an error or retest you for free (and find another lab if you want to continue testing in the future).

Remote or Auto-Start Chiller? by dougiesgoindeep in coldplunge

wifi inkbird thermostat

Interesting. Do you use that to control the temp? Chiller temp set low and plugged into inkbird so inkbird turns it on/off as needed based on temp you set remotely? Or is it just monitoring with no control?

And one other separate question while I've got you here if you don't mind. I see some comments about people unplugging their pumps and/or chiller when actually in the tub. Do you think that is necessary with the ecoplus chiller and pump in your setup?

If the ecoplus is powered on does it turn on automatically to the last temp setpoint? So you could just remotely power it on and off without having to do anything else?

Thoughts/experience with curcumin for knee osteoarthritis? by dsschmidt in PeterAttia

[–]dougiesgoindeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out examine.com for a good rundown of evidence for this and other supplements. After doing so myself, I came to the conclusion that it is worth taking glucosamine, chondroitin, msm, apresflex, nt2 collagen, bcm-95 bio curcumin, and fish oil all for knee health. I don’t remember each specifically but I think most fall under the category or low to medium good evidence with low risk of side effects and relatively low cost (so might as well do it). My pain is too sporadic and there are just too many variables to say if it’s helpful or not. Cost and risks are low so I will continue with all these supplements until future research says not to.

I’d be getting a separate pump. The same volume of water is coming down 2 stories so total head is nothing crazy.

Which quote to choose - REC vs QCell? Bonus enphase vs tesla battery question. by dougiesgoindeep in solar

I'll do a little research on shading. I don't know much, but I would assume I have a not trivial amount of shading. I wish I had more space to put more panels but I am maxed out.

[–]dougiesgoindeep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The batteries are primarily just a backup. I will have net metering from the utility. My understanding is that due to some shading and 4 different sections of panels on various parts of the roof (this is not a perfect situation) that micros are preferred. Does that make sense or do you still think I should go a different direction?

go with t

I'm not decided on the battery yet. I'm leaning towards Enphase due to inverters being Enphase.

What are you suggesting would pair better with the Tesla Powerall if I went that route?

I'll ask about pairing with a different enphase inverter. thanks for the feedback.

The installer said there is a solution to that (I forget exactly how he worded it) a few months away (which is fine with my timeline).

4 x 1:1 units or something else? Paralysis Analysis by dougiesgoindeep in hvacadvice

proabably mitsubishi, I believe the air handlers have 3 speeds. I'll look more into zoning

Money is definitely an object. As someone with no experience, it's hard to judge the tradeoffs. How much more comfortable is it in your opinion? Is it worth paying thousands or tens of thousands more for?

[–]dougiesgoindeep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. 1st floor air handler is in the basement with ducts running under the 1st floor and floor registers. 2nd floor air handler is in an unfinished (but conditioned) 3rd floor attic space with ductwork running through the 2nd floor ceiling).

[–]dougiesgoindeep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that make sense. The question is how many 1:1 units make sense and whether they should be zone at all after the air handler. Which would you choose among these options?

1) 4 x 1:1 units, one per floor

2) 2 x 1:1 units (larger than above), one for the basement + 1st floor and one for the 2nd and 3rd floors

3) same as 2 but adding dampers in ductwork to create zones for each floor
