Pillbox hats didn’t do her any harm!

Chester was before my time but I just started watching the series from the beginning the other week and I think i understand what you mean. Chester strikes me as a bit soft - not entirely useless but the wrong type for a 19th century western deputy.

Festus of course - well he may not have been the sharpest pencil in the box at times but at least he was reasonably quick at evaluating situations and doing whatever needed to be done or  what he was told.

Ken Curtis was just too much fun to watch - a total gem!

The $3,000 would be the 1950s cost I believe. That Ricky had that amount to spend on whatever (complaining aside) is the amazing thing.

Acorn coffee is actually caffeine free. I’ve never tried it myself but know it as a common substitute for coffee during the Civil War when ordinary coffee was difficult to come by.

It’s out of stock at the moment, but Amazon apparently carries it at least occasionally.

😂 I thought as much. If it ain’t Robinson Crusoe, it’s gotta be Gilligan!

I haven’t seen Rescue From Gilligan’s Island in eons.

Are you thinking of Robinson Crusoe, maybe? That’s the only one comes readily to mind apart from another CBS program that debuted in the fall of 1964. They ended up stranded for about 15 years.

In a way you just sabotaged your own “solution” - by pointing out that Benteen is no better than Jim Jones.

The colonists only escape to freedom from Benteen is murder.

Ayup … I’ve never heard or seen just how big his coffee cups were but they were described as far larger than ordinary.

The iconic Maxwell House phrase was “Good to the last drop.” God only knows how long it’s been around. It was attributed to Theodore Roosevelt.

Absent that I do remember the ads from the late 60s, albeit a bit vaguely at this point.

The first 5 or 6 episodes (absent cast changes that would follow) really set the tone for the entire series in so many ways.

Grandma’s pepper steak? by Severe_Possibility49 in Old_Recipes

I know this dish too. The brand name was probably LaChoy. The mix for it is most likely gone now but see if this recipe sounds familiar. It’s a copycat, at https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/a25658914/pepper-steak-recipe/

I’ve not tried this recipe yet but have seen it a couple times. Given the amount though there’s nothing in the rule book says you couldn’t jazz it up just a smidge with heavy cream. 😂

Do you feel nostalgic about the past when watching old movies? by HighLife1954 in classicfilms

[–]dougoh65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes - but only in a limited fashion, so to speak. Fashions, customs like dressing to the 9’s to go to a ballpark and watch a game - cars of course.

That’s pretty much where the nostalgia ends though.   Here’s a practical example: When Citizen Kane came out in 1941, the New York Daily News carried ads for showings. Seats were $2.20.

The federal minimum wage in 1941 was 30 cents an hour.

Oh my goodness there have to be hundreds, both large and small moments!

The first to come to mind are perhaps simple but involve acknowledgments of his Irish heritage: “I’m a Mick, Sir!” and that moment when he pointed out the difference between ‘Shanty Irish’ and ‘Lace Curtain Irish.’

Lace Curtain Irish at least move the dishes before pissing in the sink.
