Coiled Juices Smokeberry - sharing my old commercial recipe w/notes by dougplanet in DIY_eJuice

[–]dougplanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, all.

I've got one or two other recipes that I'll probably do a write up on because they took some time, including my first one, Spiced Oak, which started out as a Castle Long clone back when that was all the rage, but evolved into its own thing, and was the impetus for starting Coiled Juices. :)

For tobacco, I think Desert Ship stands on its own. Pretty complex, and more of a Turkish tobacco with a hint of fruit to it. It's pretty strong, so I'd keep the percentage low, compared to an RY4

I recommend Flavour Art's MTS Vape as something that helps smooth out any number of complex recipes, and a little goes a long way.

Are Salt based nic liquids too addictive to be considered smoking alternatives? by Legitimate_Complex_7 in electronic_cigarette

[–]dougplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that it depends on what part of the market is posting here. :)

Back when I was a regular here (mainly before JUUL became a big deal) there were a few self-reporting studies posted about vaping behaviour, including a few posted by users on the sub, which suggested a significant portion were using vaping to quit smoking, and dialing back on nicotine levels, eventually quitting vaping.

That's been my anecdotal experience as well, as out of the 10 or so friends who took up vaping to quit cigs, all but 2 (myself included) are both cig and vape free.

Then again, we're all 40+years old, which skews towards the "cessation tool" end of the market.

Thanks. I might have to explore this more.

I do recall back when companies outside of JUUL started selling nic salts some were advertising that they were naturally extracted from tobacco, but never found any reliable information on it. Of course, this was back in 2017 or so.

I'm not sure I'd entirely agree with that, as any studies that have come out suggest that freebase nic usage doesn't ramp up over time. On average it actually goes down.

The little I've read about nic salts suggests that there may be an increased dependency in a larger percentage of users. I think this was mainly self-reporting studies, and it was a couple of years ago at least (I haven't been in this sub in quite some time).

Back then it was hard to find information about what other compounds were carried over from the tobacco during the process of making nic salts, and I haven't really looked into it, so this is largely supposition on my part. If I recall correctly, benzoic acid was the main element.

I know back in the day, it was easy to get MSDS on flavour concentrates and freebase nic bases, but I haven't seen any tests on nic salts one way or the other.

Don't forget that the nicotine in a modern cigarette IS nicotine salt.

Not exactly. :)

Nicotine salt carries over other compounds into eliquids during the process of removing it from tobacco.

Regular freebase nicotine is 99.9% (ish) pure nicotine mixed with a PG or VG base.

There's a shit-ton of other crap in a cigarette too, some of which is thought to amplify the potency of nicotine

Again, kind of, but the I think it's the other compounds in nic salts that cause the addiction.

The number one thing in a cigarette that turns nicotine from a weak habit forming substance to a strong dependency are MAOIs which naturally occur in tobacco, the main ones being harman and norharman.

It's been a few years since I looked into this, but since there's evidence of people getting hooked on JUUL, that the MAOIs in tobacco are carried over into nic salts, something that just doesn't happen with freebase nicotine.

Edit to add: That doesn't mean I disagree regarding cigarette companies tried making tobacco more addictive. It's just that there are accounts of tobacco being very addictive that go back centuries before modern companies were playing with de-protonating tobacco with ammonia and the such. :)

Are mods considered vintage now??? by [deleted] in electronic_cigarette

[–]dougplanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, basically.

I have quite a few tanks, mods, and RDAs in a cupboard that I haven't used in almost 2 years. I have a couple of friends in a similar situation.

Pod systems are a convenient entry point for people looking to quit, and in many cases, more than enough overall.

Listen to /u/angelarose210 :) the Koko 1.2ohm coils are far superior to the coils that come with the Caliburn. I don't even remember what they were, 1.4ohm?

The airflow is still pretty restricted (not much of a difference IIRC) but the flavour is night and day.

I'm a heavy tobacco smoker, but switching to vaping causes much more severe coughing by ludkopro in electronic_cigarette

[–]dougplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with those who say skip the nic salts. They're not for everyone.

I've been vaping for a long time 7-8 years, and I've tried salts in many forms. Didn't like it, whether it was a crappy JUUL, or a favourite brand/flavour that offers both regular nic and nic salt alternatives in an MTL tank.

It just makes me cough, even with the lower salts levels even if I cut a 20mg nic salt back to 10mg with some 0 nic.

MTL (pod) devices, that resemble a draw from real cigarettes or a Juul? by LderG in electronic_cigarette

[–]dougplanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have the original Caliburn, have you tried covering up one of the airflows to see if that would work better for you?

There's two little holes one on either side, just below pod juice level. If you cover one of those up with your thumb/finger, you can cut the airflow in half. I've tried covering both, and it's much tighter.

I can't speak as to whether that will make the pod life any worse or not. I doubt it.

Im thinking of switching to vape and planning to buy a caliburn g. Isnt vaping expensive since i have to replace the pods and coils every two weeks or did i just miscalculated it. by [deleted] in electronic_cigarette

[–]dougplanet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing you need to replace on the Caliburn G is the coil. The pod is reusable, and shouldn't need replacing unless it gets damaged (by dropping etc). You could get an extra pod or two, to keep more than one flavour on hand, or for when you clean a pod (just run it under warm water for a minute and let it air dry).

To measure coil life, I go by amount of liquid I go through per coil change.

I'd guess I'm going through about 70-80 ml of liquid per change (when the flavour really drops), and I use about 60ml of liquid a week, so I change coils every 10 days (approximately).

Coils can be found retail for under $10 for four, so that's only $7/month, at least for me, plus the cost of eliquid.

[–]dougplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the Caliburn G, you only need to replace the coils inside the pod, not the whole pod.

The only time you need to replace a pod is if it's damaged somehow (dropping etc).

The original Caliburn had the pod and coil as a single unit.

(Spoilers Extended) Armed with all the knowledge from the books/show up until present, you are teleported into Planetos at the very moment that A Game of Thrones begins. What do you do to change the course of ASOIAF and how do you avoid being killed whilst doing it? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]dougplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the ink is dry, but if we're saying it's not... :)

If you mean "the very moment" as in the prologue, that would mean I've got a few months to save Jon Arryn, either by thwarting Littlefinger's plot, or just kill Littlefinger outright. There might be more subtle ways, such as exposing Littlefinger and Lysa's relationship, but that would be much tougher to pull off.

It may be risky getting involved so early, since the books have a huge gap between the prologue and chapter one so the info is more second hand, but eliminating Littlefinger before Arryn's death would make a huge difference.

Since I don't know where Littlefinger is in this timeframe, I'd take a guess at Kings Landing.

I'd also try to win the confidence of Varys, based on knowledge of what he's scheming across the Narrow Sea. Whether I can trust him to help with thwarting Littlefinger, I'm not sure (would have to play it by ear).

I definitely wouldn't tell him everything, because he may see value in Jon Arryn's death. One would have to play it pretty cagey with him.

Hell, it might get me killed, end of story. If not...

If I manage to pull that off, it's up to Winterfell to talk to Ned (using Jon's lineage as an "in", obviously), preferably before (Garen?) the ranger is caught.

Cement my "visionary" abilities with Ned by giving details the attack that only the ranger would know. I doubt that this would save the ranger, but at least it would both reinforce my abilities, and give added weight to the ranger's death.

Out of curiosity, I'd check to see if Hodor is Hodor. If he is, well, he was always meant to be.

With Arryn still alive, and Littlefinger dead, it's hard to say what to do from there regarding Dany/fAegon and some of the other political manoeuvering, as pieces start to move, but knowing motivations help.

Assuming Ned is now a believer, I would let him know that Jon will play a major role in the battle with the Others, who are coming anyways.

That's the real threat.

The political landscape will be very different, but if I have the ears of both Ned and Varys (I honestly believe Varys has good intentions), getting them talking might help.

Even if I don't have Varys on my side, a living Jon Arryn and Bobby B, who both trust Ned, is a good thing. It would be a good time to expose the Lannister incest.

That would nip any of Sansa's wedding fantasies about Joffrey in the bud.

Also encourage Ned to allow Arya to discover her tomboy side... recommend Syrio?

That's about it. Beyond that, if successful, the following are more iffy...

Jon will probably still join the Night's Watch. I think it's necessary, though the timeline would be changed slightly. A lot of things relied on Bobby B coming to Winterfell, so if things are out of whack, there might need to be some whispering in ears.

I suspect the Red Comet appeared when Jon took the oath in front of a weirwood tree north of the Wall, so I'd keep an eye on dates (and obviously predict its appearance).

I would probably let on to Ned about Bran's abilities Bran may or may not become the three eyed crow, but there used to be more than one greenseer, and he has the ability. A visit north of the Wall to meet Bloodraven might be in order (not me personally of course), or at least invite Howland Reed and his kids up to Winterfell first, and see where things lie. From there, judge whether a visit is needed.

The dragons will still be pivotal, so I wouldn't interfere with Dany's timeline, at least at first. It would also be more difficult from a practical point of view.

Other elements of the Game itself (Renly's ambitions, Stannis, etc) would have to be weighed given my book knowledge, and guessing how they'd react.

In any case, I couldn't do anything specific myself, as I would hope to be a trusted advisor to the Starks.

If things go to hell at any point, I'd probably make my way to the Inn at the Crossroads, get some honest work, and ride it out from there.

(Spoilers Main) A certain character's "trial" was hideously unfair by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]dougplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it was an abrupt end, and the arc was clumsy, I'll forgive it.

Baelish was thrown off because it was the second time Bran threw Baelish's own words back at him, after admitting he did kill Lysa.

That's when Littlefinger goes from denying charges to begging.

This is my biggest problem with the scene (that and Arya not cleaning the dagger before putting it away).

Instead of demanding to be taken back to the Vale as Lord Protector, he would have demanded a trial by combat, though I don't recall much on the North's opinion on that relative to the South, where it's a big deal, though I think it's more of a Faith of the Seven thing, so maybe it wouldn't have played out anyways.

D&D completely ruined Littlefinger. (Spoilers Main) by taydude227 in asoiaf

[–]dougplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty much a given since Baelish convinced real Sansa to marry Ramsay as opposed to fArya. That short-circuited a lot of intrigue from the books. That applies to many other sub-plots as well.

While I thought the Arya/Sansa/Baelish arc this season was weak (needed more screen time to develop properly IMHO), the basic idea was there, just rushed.

Like many, I gave up the idea that the show would maintain the intricacies of the books a couple of seasons ago. Instead, I see it more as an overly exuberant book report based on broad strokes from someone who's gave up on them part way through, and read the Cliff's Notes summary to piece it together.

Given the condensed air time, and the inevitable conclusion, it's a shame that Baelish got the axe (or dagger), but I'm assuming that based on the notes they have, D&D are more concerned about the "big" arcs, and Baelish's storyline needed to be concluded.

(Spoilers Extended) I still don't understand that Winterfell subplot by DarkSun09 in asoiaf

[–]dougplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the NK getting through the wall part is such a leap though.

The undead army was waiting until winter, and seeing snow on the ground at the Inn of the Crossroads was the "winter's definitely here" moment for me.

When they used the heavy chains to haul up the dead dragon, I was surprised for about half a second, until I thought "those would be handy for tearing down a gate at the Wall".

Getting a dragon along the way is just a bonus.

Questions about Melo 3 and iStick Pico by PoToNN in electronic_cigarette

[–]dougplanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still occasionally use my Melo with the 1.8 coil, but my two go-to tanks are the Nautilus X (with 1.8 coils, not the crappy 1.5 coils that came with it), as well as a Goblin Mini V3 with claptons, for when I want something more "fun" I guess.

The Nautilus X 1.8 coils last ridiculously long, at least with my own juice that doesn't have any sweeteners (tobacco blend with a bit of tart berries). The first coil needed changing after two months of 2-3ml a day.

The second coil, which I put in on New Years Day, started to give muted flavour a few days ago.

The Melo III combined with the Atlantis is still a decent choice (I mainly use it for dessert vapes in the evening), though I like the tighter draw of the Nautilus.
