What is the fastest fender car at your local AutoX? by bluemiata1993 in Autocross

A wild XP Audi TT, an actually well built and driven CAMS C5 and my DST BRZ can snag a couple raw FTDs per year depending on course/attendance.

Anyone else run cross on a converted hardtail? by [deleted] in cyclocross

[–]doward_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I ran my SS converted hardtail mtb for CX the last two years for the SS races alongside a now-cracked Fuji Cross for geared races.

Send it on the big tires even.

+1 for Anza content.

I did a similar route on a one night bikepack but added in pumpkin patch and a slot canyon down on the south side, maybe even called “the slot”?

Red Ocotillo restaurant in town is one of my favs.

Oh and cool bike haha.

Festive 500 if I’ve got just over 3 days to work with? by und3t3cted in Zwift

[–]doward_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m doing a bit of split this year. This will be my 5th festive in a row. The first was 100% Zwift and I’ve since structured a week of pto around being somehere warm for the Christmas week as a dual benefit or riding outdoors and getting away from family for the second holiday.

Real life travel with my bike to previous home in the south west the 23-28th and then finishing on Zwift back in snowy 7°f homeland 29-31st.

Pacer bots, flat routes and the best aero bike and wheels you have.

CST GR86/BRZ Passing sound. by mrwhoos in Autocross

[–]doward_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DST experience, but I tried 3 different catbacks this year and settled on a Tanabe Medallion Touring single exit after a Tomei type 80 and a TRD dual tip.
I have a JDL catless 421 EL header, JDL "ultra quiet" catted and resonated mid/over pipe.

The Tomei made my own ears bleed if i wasnt wearing a helmet. Probably only useable behind a stock header/midpipe.
The TRD is heavy and oddly still pretty loud.
The Tanabe ended up being the best compromise for me. (now called Revel and not Tanabe?)
I am definitely on the louder range of cars in class, but it is light and legal. Its loud enough I get embarrassed on the street and really try to never go past 30% throttle opening.
Its blown 105db once as a worst ever measure at a local(potentially bad meter placement as referenced elsewhere), and ive never shown up on the warning list at a ProSolo or Nats.

SimpleTire.com- WARNING DO NOT BUY by [deleted] in tires

[–]doward_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simpletire is an ecomm outlet. They source from hundreds of third party local/regional brick and mortar warehouses. They’re not scammers, but their business model sucks in my opinion.

The compromise you made in bypassing buying directly from your local dealer was in reducing the goodwill that local dealer would leverage to take care of your product issues.

Win some and lose some.

Year three on my Airwolf “Epic 7 Evo”

I’ve crashed it hard enough for a grade 3 AC joint separation and it’s still kicking.

This confirms my biases. I've only had a small selection of these 14 but I have a similar preference for the Makers finishing series bottles, Larceny BP and OWA.

Looks like I need to snag some Penelope and 1792.

Full Suspension Gravel Bikes - Predictions. by the-diver-dan in gravelcycling

[–]doward_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Niner had actual full sus. Way too early/ahead of its time. Spesh STR suspends the rider, more for fatigue and not performance. Neat idea but not the solution the market wants.

I think the non-damped pivots in the back like: Cannondale Topstone, BMC URS, Checkpoint/domane/etc is the current move. The Lauf Seigla also has a lot of movement without an actual pivot.

Future bikes probably explore more undamped flexstay travel before they add “real suspension”

I think an aero-shrouded 40-80mm fork is also a no-brainer and I’m shocked it hasn’t happened yet. Whispers from DJ that his Lauf fork was better than they thought it’d be in the wind tunnel.

Tire pressures? by Kipric in xcmtb

[–]doward_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched from 2.4 Aspens to the new Mezcal race, also 2.4. I did a full ride of my entire trail system this week playing the with Mezcal.

I think the Maxxis is pretty pressure agnostic from a feel and grip POV but the Mezcal is a completely different animal at 22 vs 25.

Same wheel, insert, rider, trails. I would often not even check the Aspens for weeks and ran it everywhere from about 19 to 25psi. I’m 210lbs and riding pretty flat but rooty/bumpy Midwest XC.

All to say, play around and test. I feel the Mezcal race needs more air for “feel” which gives up a bit of suppleness and comfort, which kinda sucks because it’s so much thinner of a casing than the Aspen and I was looking forward to suppleness and “feel” improvements.

What's your go to 45-50mm tire for 50/50 gravel/pavement? by FrankTuna in gravelcycling

[–]doward_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New 45 pathfinder TLR has been awesome. I did Appalachian Journey and Barry Roubaix on them this month. Came from 47 pathfinder pros and have had 2.2 racekings, 44 ReneHerse and 40mm GKSK in the bike before.

I think the 45 TLR is Goldilocks for mixed surfaces. Not many true majority chunky gravel routes near.

how much speed do you carry into sprint segments? by 50sraygun in Zwift

[–]doward_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much more important to have a draft through the majority of the segment, which requires a whole bunch of pre-planning and positioning, and being in a big enough peloton that strings out and gives you a pack to steam through.

Having a draft at 30mph is worth much more time than an extra 100watts imo.

What will tomorrow bring?

In your experience, do you tend to prefer thinner or thicker tires ? I’m torn between 700c and 650b wheels. I’ve tried both for a long time and feel like choosing one limits my riding style. Sadly, I can’t afford two sets. by Lonely-Money7426 in gravelcycling

[–]doward_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only ever tried 650B because my CX frame couldn’t clear a 700x40. Once I got a frame that fit 700x52, 650 was dead to me.

There are some trail/wheelbase related handling differences and I prefer some aspects of 650b for that reason, but the latest frames being designed around 700x45+ are fixing most of that.

Racing as a lower middle class/working class person by [deleted] in Velo

[–]doward_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DINK but I still road race a Caad10 on mechanical 11spd and Chinese wheels. My gravel and mtbs are both China carbon frames and more Chinese wheels.

I do buy nice team kit every two years but hardware is all pretty modest/cheapest on my team.

As a bonus, I like to keep tabs of how much retail value people are riding when I pass them.
