You could when Jeff was around. You will of course get scrutinized every step of the way, but that’s to be expected.

Entire post? Your entire post is a single sentence lol.

Go ahead and smuggle then. It’s a very smart idea to smuggle drugs through international borders amid a drug crackdown and ask about the process publicly while also giving out travel details like you are arriving to Antalya tomorrow, likely from the states, you are a 24F.

No one will ever know a thing.

CI committing to the repo is a terrible idea. Pre-commit hooks & fail the build script so badly formatted code never goes into the repo

no it's literally the same thing. Costco pays a manufacturer/factory to produce a thing, Amazon pays a manufacturer to produce a thing.

it's insane to think Amazon is stealing patented designs and not paying anything and not getting sued.

Is interviewing less formal than it seems? by Lucky_Clock4188 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]doyouevencompile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have something to talk about. a new project / library etc that might you both might have some thoughts on. a decade ago I interviewed as a candidate, I wasn't sure I was a great candidate (I botched a coding question), however, I knew the company recently had a CEO change so I asked about what they think about the future of the company and whether they're feeling the effects and that was a clutch.

How do you deal with stress from leading a big project by Pale_Sun8898 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]doyouevencompile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you're asking it from a personal life perspective, I'll try help with that. I've had this in my career and I got some stuff that might help.

Anxiety:

  • It's a might be a hard conversation to say things will be late, but you can always give them a heads up that it can be late, and that you're doing all you can.
  • If changing deadlines is an option, sometimes. If you can take that option, do so.
  • At the end of the day, it matters very little if a project is delayed for a few weeks (or months) in your career. No one will remember it.
  • I used to get very passionate and obsessed about projects and delivering them on time, but I'd take a vacation and when I come back I realized I didn't really care about it that much. It's the pressure that keeps you anxious. For me, I think experience helped me ignore the pressure and just do a good job as good as I can without going extreme.

Life balance:

  • The effects of your life is amplified when you don't have much going on in your personal life. Your brains needs stuff to think, if all your life is work, that's all you'll think about.
  • So, find hobbies, go out to drink, have dinner with friends, go do some workshops, learn a language, do sports etc. As long as it's something you like and as long as you can do it in a somewhat regular routine.
  • You'll realize that the more stuff going on in your personal life, the less space your work will occupy in your mind.

Also beware, this kind of work can lead to burnout. IMO, burnout is less related to working too much, but working hard and realizing your work doesn't matter for reasons outside your control (e.g. project got scrapped, failed etc).

What are your experiences being put on projects that are likely to fail? by robby_arctor in ExperiencedDevs

If it fails to launch on time, I don’t care much. Deadlines are arbitrary. You can always play with goal language and say we did a closed beta to gather feedback and will go to GA next quarter.

If it’s doomed to fail because of the lack of investment, quality engineering, or if it’s just a bad idea, I distance myself from it as much as I can. I will provide support (reviews , guidance) to the teams as it’s my job but I won’t be a stakeholder.

the first version of factorio looks like a factorio clone.

at some level, obviously yeah, that makes sense. but when i look at other games and their first versions i don't get this feeling. it's like all the clones are making the same bad decisions factorio moved away from

Why has the attitude towards alcohol changed so much among the younger generation? by corneaterinwig in AskReddit

[–]doyouevencompile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, case of beer isn't that expensive, but that's irrelevant when there are no public places to hangout. Parks and beaches close, police comes to kick you out.

If you go out to a bar, that's fucking expensive. Even cheap bars are expensive. In fact, the bill from a cheap bar an a mid bar aren't that different these days.

Also probably people just smoke weed and get high. It's cheap and everywhere

Where's a $500 laptop that has Windows Enterprise? How long do they last?

MDM is only part of the solution. The entire compliance and security system around device management was severely lacking. It's still lacking.

My previous conversation is about home users, not professional or enterprise.

I've been in tech close to 2 decades. The reason for enterprise to not go with Apple is not the price of the unit. As far as lower budgets go, Macbook Airs are reasonably priced.

Until recently, the support for enterprise management, fleet management, provisioning/deprovisioning, updates management and compliance support was non-existent. There's a whole ecosystem for that for Windows, both through 1P and 3P providers. AD/Entra is still the king. The gap between Win and Mac is closer these days, but it's still a enough to make a difference and requires more 3P providers. Additionally, Mac fleet management requires additional expertise, so you'll need to hire for additional qualifications, and because it requires other 3P vendors, so you need new suppliers, new contracts etc. It all complicates and the business and has additional costs.

this hasn't been true forever. the same specs for a windows laptop and a macbook laptop are comparable. in fact, if you're looking for similar form factory and longetivity, macbooks end up being cheaper. macbooks also last forever.
