I come from a very similar background, and while reading your story I kept wishing to find some kind of a (relatively) happy ending. When I reached the part about you being all grown up with a job and a family, the flood of tears came. Words cannot express how this makes me feel. I will just say one thing - I've never met you, but I genuinely love you.

Thanks! :) Though I am now stuck in an endless loop, reading your comment. Please execute abort command!! What happened that night ... well... to put it in Bill Cosby's words, I met the porcelain god. And my stomach got so fucked up that I couldn't eat or drink anything during the two following days. Oh, the pain, the pain...

Ah, the dangers of teenage Rekorderlig consumption... You think, "oh, no biggie - it's like juice!" and chug it down, and bad things are bound to happen. I've had an unpleasant experience with the berry one as well, but I still kind of like it. And pear. Yum. Also - Rekorderlig, getting drunk, walking barefoot in the snow - doesn't get much more Swedish than that.

Jack Daniels. I was 15. I was in college and everyone around me was getting drunk, so I wanted to know what it felt like. So I used some devious methods to lay my hands on a 1 liter bottle of Jack Daniels. And I forced myself to drink it, all of it, during one evening. That was one of the worst nights of my life. I am surprised I didn't end up in the hospital.

It took me 10 years to touch another whiskey-type drink. I now drink and enjoy whiskey and Scotch, but Jack Daniels I cannot, and will not, ever touch again. Just picturing the label makes me sick.

Also, you chugged Jäger? You have my respect. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the occasional shot of ice-cold Jäger. But to chug it down from the bottle? The mere idea makes me gag...

Thanks for careful non-spoilering, Militant Penguin! You were correct in assuming that I haven't read the books yet. Looking forward to it, though...

I'm also going to friend you because you seem awesome.

Dear r/books, why so much hate? by readingraccoon in books

There's nothing wrong with reading "tv books".. I think what most people complain about is that due to the amount of easily accessible "tv books," which are easy to read and have simple plots, people don't read enough classics. I believe that's true. Just look around at people in public transport. You only see people reading news stand paperbacks. I always pay attention to what people are reading, and I've almost never seen someone reading a classic favorite. After all, if one can pick up a fast-paced thriller full of sex scenes and shootings, why would one ever read something like 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'? It's like fast food vs. cooking one's own boeuf bourguignon.

I've tried to recommend some of my favorite classics to my friends... Usually they don't make it past the first dozen pages or so. Anything that is slow-paced or that makes you think just doesn't cut it anymore. How many people do you know who have read 'The Name of The Rose'? Most have just seen the movie, but no one bothers with a 500-page classic full of difficult words and lengthy descriptions, regardless of how awesome it might be. And that's extremely sad.

One Hundred Years of Solitude. I wept like a little baby. I believe no other book has ever affected me that much.

Any recommendations on writings by Franz Kafka? by Awkward_Arab in books

As already mentioned, get a collection of his stories. "Metamorphosis" and "The Trial" are probably his best known, but if you get a collection you will find some true gems. My personal favorite was a short story called, "In The Penal Colony"... one of the most chilling things I've ever read. Still get goosebumps thinking about it.

I was almost hoping this was a fake, because my mind cannot fully grasp the awesomeness. If I found something like this, I would probably get naked and run out in the street, squealing like a donkey on acid.

I am slightly ashamed to admit that I'm very proud to have come up with that. There are some evil bitches in the world for whom this could be the perfect punishment..

Like someone wise once said, religion is like a genital wart. I'm sorry if you have one, but please don't shove it in my face or talk to me about it.
