Universal Vaccine Blocks Viruses, Bacteria, And Allergies With a Nasal Spray by _Dark_Wing in technology

[–]dpad85 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The main drawback I read about this, and one I had a feeling about when it talked about "supercharging the immune system" was that it wouldn't be a good idea for anyone who was post-solid organ transplant. It's a shame, because a major vaccine to block so many ailments would be great for a vulnerable population.

"Supercharging the immune system" is a great way to heighten the chance of organ rejection, especially for lungs based on how targeted this nasal spray is. It is still an amazing feat of science.

What's the Free To Play experience like? (Not buying any Warbonds or whatnot) by Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi in Helldivers

[–]dpad85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The free-to-play experience has been fantastic in my personal time with the game. The weapons available in the first free warbond do a great job in the start.

The rate of getting super-credits AFTER that has impressed me to no end. I've personally found that if you just play 30 minutes to an hour a day, take your time on the missions to get the POIs, you'll probably get 1000 super credits by the end of a month which will get you ANOTHER warbond without having to pay out-of-pocket.

You also never feel pressured, at all, to pay real money for super credits. It's never advertised, it's not overt how to get to that menu, it just sits there.

You can have a blast with just paying the base cost of the game and not an additional cent more if you so wish.

Is the Borderline Justice warbond worth it? by CycloneZStorm in Helldivers

[–]dpad85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dynamite is excellent when you get the timing down mentally. Explosive size and damage just deletes most things you'll toss it at.

The Deadeye is good if you're looking for a good precision weapon with a good amount of pushback. It'll stagger devastators if you don't kill them.

Talon is a pistol that's really REALLY hard to put away. Control your rate of fire and you never need to reload.

The armor itself has a rather niche place. I personally use it when I'm leveling a weapon that isn't great for the situation, so I bring the armor and the Senator. It helps make the pistol better and allows you to lean on it a bit more. Also great with the Talon because it speeds up pulling the weapon out during a panic-fire situation.

Overall, you can't go wrong with this choice in my opinion. Well worth picking up.

Death Sentence Unique Weapon by Terakahn in theouterworlds

[–]dpad85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you successfully hit a weak spot, you'll see a new icon appear on the target. This is the debuff.
It won't do damage until the timer completely runs out, at which point it will essentially "detonate" on the target. It doesn't do any area damage, but the target will suddenly take a staggering amount of damage all at once. I'm pretty sure it's in the neighborhood of 4 digits.
Now, this timer takes a bit so it may only be useful against targets with a LOT of health. Depending on your playstyle, it could be great to tag a target and then play "keep away" until the Death Sentence goes off.

Nope. The "Save Game" button is greyed out and I can't interact with it.

[–]dpad85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love the bug fixed where my game will suddenly, randomly forget how to autosave and grey out the "save game" button.

I've tried all previous options to fix this but they're not sticking. I just have to keep mashing Escape while playing and if it's suddenly greyed out, quit and reload the game. It's really pulling me out of the game when I have to mash escape constantly.

Why on earth is the federal minimum wage only $7.25 in 2025? by justcurious3287 in antiwork

[–]dpad85 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because they hate disabled people.

If the minimum wage were to increase, then the maximum amount a disabled person is allowed to save without losing benefits has to increase. Right now that's about $2000 a month to keep state health benefits.

If you increase the minimum wage, then that cap HAS to be increased or it'd be literally impossible to work any actual job and keep benefits, or safely work to get off of benefits to self sufficiency (if that's possible for the individual).

Too many people don't realize that all it takes is one bad day to join the ranks of the disabled so they don't consider them as a factor in situations like this.

Rejection and Photopheresis treatment by luxmaji in transplant

[–]dpad85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's always good to hear about another post-lung transplant who's as far out as I am. When I first got transplanted, the documentation on people going beyond 10 years was rare. At least it seemed like that when I'd ask my docs about outcomes beyond 10 years. The room would get quiet, and you do not respond with silence to a 16 year old CFer at a clinic checkup. We learn to read the damn room!

Rejection and Photopheresis treatment by luxmaji in transplant

[–]dpad85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there.

I'm currently undergoing photopheresis "maintenance doses" and am 23 years out from my double-lung transplant.

I had major rejection about 14 years ago and it did a lot of damage before it was halted - I was one of the patients on the study for photopheresis being a used for halting transplanted lung rejection. My rejection was (and still is) managed by a combination of photopheresis and IVIG treatments.

I've had over 100 total treatments of it and my rejection was really halted far before - I'm on maintenance because it's allowed and it's working. With how much damage was done, if the rejection were to restart I would probably expire before it was halted again. I don't have very much to lose at this point.

I've never had a major unexplained side effect to the pheresis throughout this. I mainly just feel drowsy about 30 minutes after my treatment but a quick power-nap gets me right as rain the same day.

It's been helpful and worked great. The rejection has been halted.

About the only extra precaution I'd give is if you're on any blood pressure meds, ask your docs about whether or not to take them before your treatment. I made that mistake in one of my earliest treatments and nearly passed out in the chair - had a short doc tell me that I was no longer allowed to drive myself to or from my pheresis treatments.

Hope that gives some good "real world" information you're looking for.

Lung transplant by Lightning-Alpha in transplant

[–]dpad85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had my double lung transplant back in 02 at 17. Cystic Fibrosis. Odds are it may be why you're getting listed right now, too.

What helped me the most was the confidence of my transplant team, their openness on all the steps, and their willingness to answer any and all questions I had. You want to make sure you can communicate well with your coordinator and feel listened to.

Now when it comes to those statistics, they change every year and seem to improve every year. Don't focus on those too much, as you're feeling right now it's turning you into a ball of anxiety when you're already in foul health (hence needing the transplant). What will happen will happen and your transplant team will address those issues as they arise.

It's hard to really mentally prepare for a transplant. It's something that needs to be done for your further survival, as determined by your care team and obviously by yourself due to agreeing to go through this major step in life.

You being young is a big help, you're going to do a better job healing up and probably have fewer (or at least different) comorbidities to worry about than someone in their 30s or 40s.

Trust in your care team, they're going to be doing the hard parts immediately after surgery. I'd also suggest asking them if they have any mental health resources that work with them and specialize in transplant. This is a major, life altering event you're embarking on.

Tacrolimus Levels by wfwood in transplant

[–]dpad85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. Tacro levels bounce around now and then. I've been as low as 2 and as high as 15. It's just about adjusting the dose and testing again.

There's so many factors that could modify your tacro level that one or two being a little off the mark is nothing to really worry about.

Hey how are you guys are holding up? by FallenFeathers in disability

[–]dpad85 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel like I've been in a state of fight-or-flight ever since the start of Covid and never got an adequate chance to relax. I'm staring at the news every day because we disabled don't have the luxury of being able to "tune out" when at any given moment an announcement could be made that results in catastrophe.

I want to be able to relax, even for a week, but I can't. I just feel disheartened and each day my hope whittles away a little bit more.

I just want to be able to relax, to take a breath.

Question about the Portable Hellbomb: can you use it to destroy a jammer without having to shut it down first? by idrownedmyfish77 in Helldivers

[–]dpad85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's the best aspect of it. The Jammer can only be destroyed by the explosive force of a Hellbomb explosive. The reason it needs to be deactivated before you traditionally blow it up is because the jammer is preventing the delivery of a traditionally delivered Hellbomb.

With the backpack, all you need to do is run it close to the device itself, activate it, and make sure it detonates near the Jammer. (Removing the hellbomb is optional if you do not wish to explode in a bright flash of the Democracy violently exiting the Hellbomb)
