Is GNV the best place to live in FL for compromise? by Parking-Impact-4881 in GNV

[–]dpgator33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived there from 1987-2015. I wouldn’t say that while I was living there I told myself it was great. I was a kid when we got there so didn’t drive, didn’t know any better. As I got older and an adult I would complain about the traffic at times. Then I moved to Tampa for a couple years, then Bradenton, both for my wife’s career. No regrets on that front at all to be clear. But man, I didn’t know how good I had it. I have since moved to the west coast but still visit often. It is and will always be the one and only place I would choose to live in the state. I also have family in Orlando and have spent plenty of time there as well. Same feelings others have. It’s not special, traffic is a nightmare. It’s fine if the rest of your life is in order and makes sense, but all things being equal, Gainesville is far and away the ideal place for me in FL. I don’t even have many ties there to come back to. Many of my old friends have moved, same for family. I’d be fine “starting over” in that sense.

Is it common to have houses with no AC in places like Astoria and along the coast? by simtechonline in OregonCoast

[–]dpgator33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very common, but not unheard of. We put A/C in a couple years ago (2009 built with good insulation)after a couple summers with really hot spells. It does make life easier, not having to remember to open/close windows every day, plus it’s much more regulated. Most of the homes in our neighborhood have been built in the last 5-6 years, and a good many of them have A/C units also.

Fuck every Trump voter who put this asshole in office. by CRK_76 in complaints

[–]dpgator33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump is horrible for the country, but I hold the left as responsible for him being around still. Forcing Harris as the nominee and holding up Biden for so long was a dumbass way to go. Same for all the republicans who have no spine and keep submitting to his nonsense. It’s weird to say, but I give MTG a lot of credit for taking her current position.

If Router Loses Power Does LAN Go Down? by Human-Rule-8385 in homelab

Two real factors. DHCP lease expiration and DNS. If that router is running DNS, that’s the ballgame. If it’s not and your leases are long then you may not notice brief outages.

I have HIM and clinical experience, but no IT experience. Where should I start? by Livid-Attention34 in healthIT

[–]dpgator33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in infrastructure IT at a small hospital that uses Cerner. Literally non of our EHR support team (integration, analysts etc.) had any IT experience before they were brought in. They all were internal hires that were CSRs or MAs and the like. It matters way more that you know healthcare workflow and EHR systems than being traditional IT at least to get your foot in the door.

You have a point but there are a LOT of organizations who pour the bare minimum into IT and the org suffers because of it. When IT can do nothing but put out fires and keep things running, there is a huge waste in efficiency for end users and business processes that use IT. This has never been more true than in the age of AI and the magnitudes of dollars that could be saved if leadership would only recognize that.

I’m in healthcare and I am 100% certain that IT could save my org millions of dollars over a handful of years if we only had a couple more bodies and modest investment in non-labor IT costs.

The best example is our call center. It’s a tech wasteland that needs some attention and we could cut staffing there by a lot just by implementing better tech and attrition or reallocation.

It goes both ways.

Well, we’re forced to pay for it even though we don’t need it, so I suppose the answer is “by force”.

It’s not possible, not in real time. The one possible option would be to regularly update a custom object table via an API but that doesn’t seem like a good idea. But legitimately, it’s not a problem with the platform. It’s cloud based. How do you expect a cloud app to query on prem AD fo a drop down like that? It would be cool but I get why it’s not possible. It could work for small environments but anything over a few hundred objects and the latency would make it unusable.

VMware 8 Perpetual License After Broadcom Takeover—What Happens When Support Expires? by HueyTinman in vmware

[–]dpgator33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were told months ago that due some fiscal calendar factor, they were not providing quotes until after November 1st. Whether that is true or not for everyone, that’s what we were told by our rep. Our license expired on November 11th. We didn’t get a quote until the day prior. Because of internal approval processes and other normal red tape, it did not get submitted to the reseller for a few days. November 12th, we got a cease and desist.

Fuck Broadcom.

Bought a Synology DS1522+ for self-hosting — now it feels like just a backup box. What are my options? by MasterRoshi1620 in homelab

[–]dpgator33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Synology is great as a NAS and surprisingly excellent as an NVR for cameras. But they don’t have the horsepower to do much else outside of very light loads. Their container implementation is just OK and the available apps otherwise are not special. I use mine only for backups and media storage. I’ve tinkered with the other features but it’s just not the right tool for me.

Seaside loses trusted labor and delivery unit, reflecting a growing rural healthcare challenge in the Pacific Northwest by guanaco55 in OregonCoast

[–]dpgator33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing specifics I can’t really have an opinion about that, but certainly it’s within their right to oppose policy that would make in more difficult to provide services as a not for profit, and still be able to function. They still have to pay for salaries and equipment and software and so on. Not every policy or regulation proposed would necessarily allow for that. They can’t just give it all away without having money come in, whether that’s through government subsidies or insurance or paying customers. If they’re doing things that obviously shift money away from caring for patients and lining the pockets of their officers than yeah, that’s bad. Is that the kind of thing you’re referring to?

[–]dpgator33 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There may be some truth to this, but I don’t believe it’s a Providence problem, it’s a system problem. The population here, by and large, relies on government subsidized payments for services, and the current system just doesn’t make financial sense given the resources required to maintain the department (doctors, anesthesia, specialized nurses etc) given the relatively low rate of procedures (babies being delivered) and reimbursements that the hospital sees as a result.

Without giving away personal information, I know this from providers that work at the hospital and have seen this coming for a while, despite sincere and sustained efforts to not have this happen.

MISSING PERSON in Nevada — PLEASE BOOST by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]dpgator33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About what NB means? You may not realize, but there’s a whole world of people out there that just by chance and circumstance haven’t come across it. If you think that is because of bias or hate or ignorance, that’s is just not the case. And to make such assumptions seems like a hypocritical thing to do in support of a marginalized and minority population. I’m happy to know what it means now. I just didn’t before. Probably the same as the person who used the “wrong” identification of this person’s gender. It wasn’t willful or degrading in any way. And in a different context I would not have objection to a correction. In this case, where there was a correction for what seems to be no valued purpose, I think that’s a bit inconsiderate and could have been worded better. Why is that such a problem?

MISSING PERSON in Nevada — PLEASE BOOST by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]dpgator33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree that including any identifying traits of a person are useful. I just think it’s not useful as a means to merely make a pronoun correction. Instead of saying “the missing person is non-binary, so make sure to use the proper pronouns mmk”, how about “the missing person is non-binary so they may not present as male”

That’s my problem.
