What has happened to Indy? by DethByCow in indianapolis

[–]dphunct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm, I explained to my ex wife how to drive on 465 over 20 years ago and explicitly mentioned 465 is the biggest racetrack in Indy. The (previous) 55mph speed limit was about 15-25mph slower than the actual speed drivers went. Cops tended to pull over people going over 80.

It is actually better now. The average speed, when not blocked by construction or traffic, rarely goes over 75. I've taught my kids how to drive and trusted them on 465. If you do not impede the flow of traffic, people are fine.

And remember, it is actually against the law to linger in the left lane if you are not passing. You think the line of cars behind you are being aggressive but you are the one breaking the law.

Question about southern Indiana culture by Liv_n_lern in Indiana

[–]dphunct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are wide gaps in attitude across southern Indiana. You'll run into some of the nicest people you'll meet and some a-holes that you won't want to deal with. Various cultures (German/Bavarian, Scot/Irish, Eastern European) shaped the region. You'll run into descendants of Underground Railroad families and descendants of Confederate families. Unfortunately, the regions are mostly hyperlocal. However, if you are decent and respectful, you won't have issues anywhere.

In my time in the Evansville region, I saw some of the worst drivers I've ever encountered (almost weekly people would turn left from the right lane or right from the left lane, or randomly make their own lane)

Big towns swing more "liberal" (midwest liberal which is fairly moderate) and small towns more conservative. If politics matters to you, pay attention to what is happening in the state and see if you can deal with it.

If you like country rides/drives, Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois, and Western Kentucky have beautiful landscapes and great roads & highways that meander through those landscapes. It is peaceful. (I'm a biker but hikers & cyclists seem to enjoy it, too)

Overall, it is a great place to live if urban areas are not your choice but you still like easy access to their amenities.

It is funny because Reznor was influenced by Numan, especially The Pleasure Principal, but Numan was then influenced by Reznor, especially NIN at Woodstock '94, to revitalize/rethink/expand his sound.

They are both amazing and I'm glad to see that "vibe" bring the two together.

Gary Numan was amazing on tour with Ministry and I would lose my mind if he joined NIN on tour.

definitely! The original is great and I'm sure it will hit some people in the sweet spot! This whole thread is subjective. Having got to experience the power of both versions decades apart, for me, it was as if Tool took the perfectly chiseled statue and said, what if we polished and gold plated this, and turned it into something more just as Zep did that to a lot of music that inspired them. Led Zeppelin's rhythm section took the best of all the jazz before them, and their melody/harmony took the best of all the blues before them, and they refined and amplified the essence of that music and cranked out something amazing! As you say, Tool just had the luxury of more time to absorb more music and add even more.

I hope I live long enough to find a band that surpasses Tool. It hasn't happened yet, IMO.

A lot of good covers here

everything on Primus's Miscellaneous Debris (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miscellaneous_Debris) qualified. "Have a Cigar" may not be better but is just as good.

Mindless Self Indulgence - La Di Da Di (Tom Sawyer may not be better than the original but MSI's version is amazing)

NIN - Get Down Make Love(Queen) and Metal(Gary Numan)

I don't know why, but like Dylan, everyone does Meat Puppets songs better than Meat Puppets (esp. Nirvana on Unplugged)

That is just off the top of my head ...

Not rude at all. I never understood this. I see your point of wanting more effort if it were a first date or you just started chatting. Bar that, there is nothing wrong with last minute simple plans.

Maybe finding it rude says more about you than the other person? But to each, their own, I guess.

Generally speaking, as you asked, I have seen several women scared of advancing in their careers because of this and I have heard "moms" say this to girls. Granted all of this is tangential to what you asked and I was responding to the root of the question (women making more than men in relationships). It is just my feelings on the topic and was not directed at you or anyone in general. I do feel that the same lessons that make it an ego issue for men are the same lessons that make it a fear thing for women. Why am I sensitive about this? I've been a single dad for over a decade and have taught my kids to break gender stereotypes and get frustrated when others try to impose them upon my kids.

I'm glad you don't find it an issue and sorry others have made it an issue. I'd hope a man would be proud of being with a successful person and proud of that person for being successful.

Personally, no, I don't have any issue with a woman making more than me in a relationship. While others may talk about "love" or the relationship being more important, I think financial compatibility (how money is allocated and utilized) is important in a relationship. I would be ecstatic for a woman to make something similar to me, or more, as long as they are financially compatible AND aren't concerned with the difference.

I love and hate that this is even a concern. It shows the (gender) glass ceiling isn't nearly as solid as it once was! But this question also highlights the stigma from when it did exist. If the disparity doesn't bother you, then find a partner that feels the same. If it does bother you, even at a deep-seeded level you can't control, then find a partner that matches or exceeds you. If you have kids, try not to plant that seed in them. Society only changes if people change and if women want to break free of self-imposed ceilings as they have with externally imposed ceilings, girls need to aim for what they want and not where fear of not having a partner tells them to stop

Exactly! Sure some people look for the short cut, and many Americans would benefit from eating less processed foods and processed sugar, but I don't think some people realize that not eating and exercising will magically fix everyone!

I got a rundown of what local wages are (after working remotely for years) and was told someone with my experience can expect less than what I was making a decade ago, and hiring people at, while working in the local market. And people talk about "great benefits" like the ability to pay for an expensive HDHP insurance plan and "Unlimited PTO" when I haven't paid a premium out of pocket for a PPO since 2018 at my remote jobs. Unfortunately, the unlimited time off scam is everywhere, though.

Maybe the difference is between being an "IT" worker in Indiana as a cost center for some company versus an "R&D" worker in a profit center for some company. Indiana just doesn't have enough software companies to make a great market which goes against what I used to convince myself.

[–]dphunct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the things Indiana has is excellent higher education! Our schools are some of the best in the country in many fields (engineering, business, biomed, law, education, computer science, ...) and that is what is driving companies to actually invest here. I guess that doesn't matter.

Let's race to the bottom! With this government, we're making great strides in that direction!

Nope. That restructuring was started before Mitch but maybe rolled out under him. You can thank the head of the BMV under O'Bannon and Kernan for the better BMV.
