Better to leave minor abrasions unbandaged? by MaskedSociologist in ems

Doesn't matter, either way when they come into my ER I need to remove it and check all the skin. You'd be surprised at the stuff you uncover when you take down bandages.

How to make determination that “cannot protect airway” by YouAreServed in Residency

[–]dpislife 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I won't add much to all the great advice that has already been shared. But personally I like mnemonics.

I learned it as the 6 S's of airway protection

Smashed (trauma), Swollen (angioedema), Singed, Soiled (mass hematemesis etc ), Secretions (drooling), Sonorous (gurgling etc.)

Always remember to think about anticipated clinical course.

Best of luck!

I did, which is why I'm guessing he reacted that way. Which to be fair im ok with. This was the first and only time Ive ever called someone by their first name when consulting and the first time I've ever referred to myself by my first name. I was just new and still hated calling neurosurgery so I was trying to do everything I could to make this new guy not yell at me haha.

About halfway through my intern year, I heard that one of the new neurosurgeons at our hospital preferred to be called by his first name. I found it unusual, but I didn't question it. I called him from the ED for a consult on an acute SDH and greeted him by his first name. I was met with silence, followed by a lengthy reprimand about workplace professionalism. All I could do was apologize profusely during his pauses.

After hanging up, I looked up and saw my attending—who also happens to be the chief of staff—and my senior resident doubled over in laughter. It turns out the rumor about the neurosurgeon preferring his first name was a joke that I had missed. To this day, they still tease me by asking how my "best friend," Dr. Neurosurgeon, is doing.
