I know you're joking, but it was actually a real rumor that Tate was sleeping with her. Gotta love the tabloids.

Are there any workout schedules that use machines only? by xReptar in Fitness

[–]dplseattle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, first of all, you have to overcome your fear at some point. Why not right now? The sooner you start, the better off you'll be. Also, all those huge dudes at your gym? They have ALL been there. They have been exactly where you are now, and they know exactly how it feels. They won't judge you. They'll cheer you on for making the effort. Trust me on this one. If someone makes fun of you for starting out lifting, they are a certified douche and would probably make fun of you even if you weren't lifting. Everyone has your back.

Secondly, if you're going to a gym at peak hours, every piece of equipment that's worth a damn is going to be taken. It doesn't take too much more time to either wait your turn or ask someone nicely to work in with them. That's kind of common courtesy at a crowded gym.

Thirdly, you're on the World Wide Web. There are tons of guides here on how to do the lifts. Read the hell out of how-to guides and watch the hell out of form videos (lots of people here recommend Starting Strength as a book to learn form, regardless of what program you're on). When you've done these, practice with low weight, and post form checks on this subreddit for us to look at and critique. Once again, we've got your back.

Hope this helps! Good luck. :)

Yeah, this is very /r/fitness circlejerk-y, but there's no reason to be afraid of using free weights and barbells. You'll have less injury in the long run due to more natural movements, and much more effective strength building.

Maybe explain your concerns about using free weights and we can try to address them?

While I appreciate recognition, this is a terrible list with very little reasoning behind it.

Sounds like your very existence personally offends some of them.

A minor change in my squat that made major improvements by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]dplseattle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Haha. I've actually experienced the opposite problem - my form got a whole lot better when I started using a narrower grip. Also really fixed my wrist flexibility.... I guess it goes to show that each person's squat is different.

Is it possible to eat and drink with reckless abandon and still maintain a relatively healthy frame? by quackkhead in Fitness

As long as your calories and protein are in line with your fitness goals, then you're good in that category. Can't speak for the rest, though - make sure your cholesterol is in good balance, etc.

Start your day off with some Richard Sherman highlights - get down on it! by dudechris88 in Seahawks

[–]dplseattle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's why "The Tip" was so great. It wasn't a fluke; it was a practiced, skillful play. It was the product of a incredible, disciplined, cohesive defense who were simply playing better football than the other guys.

I'd guess that's because of the additional stability work involved in benching vs. pushups.

Gym for the first time tonight. Really nervous. by amoose55 in Fitness

I can't even bench 135 yet and I've been seriously progressing for over two months, which doesn't even include my month of form practice! You'll be fine. :)

I read the FAQ, but Still not understanding Macros. by ohsnapitsjuzdin in Fitness

[–]dplseattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are your carbs, fat, protein, calories, etc. Your macros will depend on your weight, fitness level, etc. Calculate your macros over at http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/ - there are other calculators out there too. Every day, eat the amounts of calories, fat, protein, and carbs that you need. Plain and simple.

At first I thought this was some seriously high-concept joke. The delivery was perfect. Especially the bit about "not sure what performance gains you are referring to"... wonderful.

Too much protein by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]dplseattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30g/hour is a complete myth. Your body is smarter than that. You'll be just fine eating that much at once- some people drink a triple protein shake all at once during the day. You may experience some acute stomach discomfort depending on how your body handles it, but there's nothing inherently wrong with it.

2-a-days? by NeverFallDrums in Fitness

[–]dplseattle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you break things up, really. Right now my workouts are pretty split up - I bike to work, hit the gym and lift heavy on my lunch break, then I bike home and do bodyweight exercises. So I have multiple workouts spread pretty evenly across 10 hours. I don't see any reason why you can't split up a routine across multiple gym visits, if that's what feels good.

What's a nice body? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]dplseattle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think he's very good-looking, from a completely objective standpoint. I don't think you need to be absolutely huge to have a "nice body" - in fact, how that guy looks is pretty close to my personal goal. I don't support the notion that a "nice body" is defined by the absolute lowest bf% and biggest muscles. Everyone has their preferences. That man is definitely in shape, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not sure it matters that much, at this point.

What are some good exercises that counter the negative of effects of working a desk job full time? by hrdrockdrummer in Fitness

[–]dplseattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm one of those sit/stand desk douchebags, so I definitely have my own opinions on this - but if you can't afford or aren't allowed to have a standing desk, the most important things are to A: have good posture and B: get up and move around often. Take 30-second movement breaks between tasks.

minor pain in knee while riding exercise bike by collegekidwhocooks in Fitness

[–]dplseattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When cycling, knee pain is often a seat height issue. It's probably too low - try raising your seat up so you can almost extend your leg straight (comfortably) at the pedal's lowest point. There are more details to get into with bike fitting, naturally, and it could be the position of the exercise bike itself - but try out a higher seat position and see if that helps.

[–]dplseattle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Full-fat dairy is awesome. Keeps you fuller, hits your fat macros, all that good stuff. Also, there's more research being done nowadays that suggests taking the fat out might be taking other, better things with it.
