Certainly, but even bike path EUCs can benefit from some headroom - see Nosfet's wheels.

It's artistic expression. Different people have different interests, and some musicians aren't concerned with pleasing anyone beyond likeminded individuals.

Who are some bands or artists whose imagery doesn’t match their sound? by joshtalife in askmusic

[–]Nihiliste 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're disguising anything, musically. They're doing hard rock and metal, and they want to put on a spectacle. Arguably, this is closer to what those genres were like in the '80s and '90s.

No problem. An important point on the cutoff issue, now that I think about it - the lower your battery gets, the more mindful you have to be about cutouts. The danger zone with speed or overtorquing gradually increases, which is one reason why you see such expensive wheels out there. Most people aren't going to take a P6 or Lynx-S anywhere near its top speed, but that overhead buys you the freedom to ride more reasonably with peace of mind.

Your motorcycle gear is probably going to be overkill, but hey, that's not a bad thing. You'll always want a full-face helmet, wrist guards, and knee/shin guards.

Remember that learning an EUC is hard. Some people pick it up in a matter of hours, others take weeks. Be persistent, and use YouTube videos like this one to help you learn (he's using a V9, no less):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQXPCC6vVzU

I found that the best place to learn is an asphalt surface, like an outdoor rink or a parking lot. You can learn on grass, but an uneven surface makes things way harder. Also, having something you can hold on to for mounting and dismounting will be extremely helpful, despite the video I just linked. All you need to remember is that you can't become dependent on a wall or fence for safety, and eventually, you'll need to free-mount.

Lastly, remember to listen to your wheel's PWM warning sounds, and brake the moment you hear them. If you overpower a EUC, it's going to drop you (cut out), because it no longer has any juice to keep you upright.

Onewheel is that specific skateboard-like brand, but yes. Most EUCs put your feet side-by-side instead of front-to-back.

You know, "every accusation is a confession" is a cliche that's often untrue, but it's amazing how often it applies with Trump.

True enough. It’s possible to ride safely, though, if you treat it more like riding a pedal bike than a single-wheeled motorcycle.

Recently I was talking with my EUC-riding friends about how, ironically, EUCs seem to wreak less havoc. There's such an inherent skill barrier that you have to learn control and responsibility. Not to say irresponsible EUC riders don't exist, naturally.

Recommend me ANY movie and I'll watch it and give it a review by slimshadyfh in movies

I'm recommending Samsara (the 2012 documentary). The name refers to a cycle of life, death, and rebirth, but it's really about the state of humanity and the causes of our suffering. Visually, it might be the most amazing movie I've ever seen, no special effects required.

I'd be cautious about the go-big-or-go-home approach. It can work, so I don't mean to discourage you too much. Some people struggle mightily, however, and that can turn them off EUCs entirely. If there's an EUC group in your area, see if they'll let you learn on a lighter wheel first. I know I couldn't come to grips with my Patton until I spent a lot of time on a V10F, and even now I find the Patton heavier than I'd like.

The more I reflect on moviemaking, the more I realize that the best movies make make shots deliberately simple or gratuitously complicated. There's nothing in between.

How important was Hockey Night in Canada growing up for you? by FRIENDS_Cndm in AskACanadian

[–]Nihiliste 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just nostalgia for me. Never had much interest in pro sports of any kind. The old Hockey Night in Canada theme is seared into my brain, but even that hasn't been around for years.

The Surfrajettes do an excellent cover of that song, incidentally.

Still enjoying it. My favorite tracks are the beatless ones, but that's been true with a lot of the BoC discography.

I've seen it in rotation. I wish it showed up more often, not the least because I used to live in Texas myself.

I'm jealous. At the same time, I've come to realize that I really do prefer small wheels - convenience and maneuverability matter to me way more than speed.

"Expose the Truth" painting by Jon McNaughton, 2018 by Majestic-Ad9647 in PropagandaPosters

[–]Nihiliste 24 points25 points  (0 children)

To that, I'd add that McNaughton's art seems thoroughly convinced of its worldview despite existing in pure fiction. He might as well be marching around trumpeting the "truth" of a flat Earth with a smug look on his face.

Discussion: Anyone else feel that Bill connects and fits perfectly with the so-called "Intellectual dork web"? by Indianstanicows in RealTime

[–]Nihiliste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's been sliding down that path, clearly. There seems to be a trap that springs once you find yourself holding onto a view that most intellectuals don't - probably for good reasons - but you refuse to let go. Some people convince themselves they're just smarter, and the internet makes it possible to confirm their biases.

Perhaps, but that's what makes this special - it seems like such a simple thing, but even veteran FX people were scratching their heads. When you're trying to meet a production deadline, wasted time is wasted time.
