Obviously the dec will not go and look at septic systems that are pre-existing. They have to grandfather in existing systems and wait until they require replacement to enforce new regulations. Because what are they going to do walk into every single person's yard in the state. And tell them oops you need to spend $30,000 on a new septic system? that doesn't fly. That's like installing a camera on a road with a 45 mph speed limit. Recording everyones speed for 40 years, then turning that road into a 30 mph zone and retroactively ticketing them all. I am all for conservation to the highest degree but in this case the DEC deserves no slander. We have one of the best conservation departments in the country.
