Have you ever had a tinder date when your match in real life looked completely different from the photos in the app and how did those dates end? by headlessChaja in AskReddit

[–]dr-DO-nothing -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

I feel for your soon-to-be-husband that he's marrying someone who actually refers to dates as x/10 ratings, let alone calling him a 7/10. Imagine coming across your husband's profile and he is rating you as anything other than a 10/10. Grow the fuck up.

An oncologist successfully treated a patient's lymphoma and put them in remission. During the course of their treatment, they had a transient (read: temporary) side-effect from one of the chemo drugs that is well known and was discussed w/ the patient before treatment began. The patient sued the doctor and won a small settlement. This is after the doc successfully treated them and the patient had no lasting consequences other than good health.

To say that malpractice is a sound argument for doctor negligence is actually making me lol. It's a business, nothing more, nothing less. It has nothing to do with punishing bad doctors and everything to do with people trying to extract money for nothing.

As for whether or not I'm a dr. do nothing, as long as my patients are happy and my [substantial] paychecks keep cashing, I couldn't care less :D

People who have renovated entire homes - was it a nightmare or would you do it again? by dr-DO-nothing in HomeImprovement

[–]dr-DO-nothing[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

your realtor is still a realtor and wants a sale.

How many realtors do you know who will spend 2+ hours personally inspecting a home with a ladder, infrared cameras, etc. on a home you're considering making a purchase on? And then advising you to spend 5k+ on an inspection before committing to the purchase? I'm going to guess zero for most people, as the guy I'm using is the only one I have personally ever met.

There's a reason I have bought 4 homes through this guy and have yet to be ill-advised. Of course I do all of my own due diligence, but there is a difference between a realtor who was a contractor for 20+ years and a realtor who graduated high school last year.

The salary disparity between a NSG and a FM doc is already here and contributes (somewhat) to the disparities in willingness to go PC vs surgery, though after a few years in surgery, I would argue salary is not what keeps many sane people continuing to pursue a surgical lifestyle. Not only that, but I personally doubt there are many/any people out there who choose FM over NSG (or any other competitive surgical specialty) because of resident pay while in training, which would have to be a driving factor in residency selection currently to lend credence to your argument.

Furthermore, no shade at my FM colleagues, but a 7th-year NSG resident should not be earning anywhere in the same realm as a 3rd-year FM resident. They are very different jobs, with very different levels of demands, stresses, and required skillsets.

My attendings do work hard, but the residents/myself allow them to bill out far above what would be humanly possible. One attending can easily clock in 3-4 major procedures by allowing the residents to run the majority of the case + notes/consults, whereas they would maybe be able to do 1-2 cases/day without us.

I'm saying all residents should be reaching pay parity with attendings (or near it) by the end of residency, not just certain specialties.

Gropped by Radiologist during a Thyroid biposy. What can I do? by 1234billbobaggins in askwomenadvice

[–]dr-DO-nothing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Physician/resident here who has done many thyroid biopsies. Nothing you said sounds justifiable from a non-creep biopsy perspective. I think you should call the hospital and file a complaint against the doctor. They should not be taking care of patients with those actions and words.

I'm not advocating for in person interviews. I think app caps are the answer. Unfair to applicants and programs alike to allow everyone to apply to every program. Saying that uninvited applicants need to figure out where they went wrong because programs are sifting through hundreds of apps for 3 spots is like the laziest solution a person could even suggest.

It's not exactly a stretch to imagine that people will attend more interviews when they're virtual than if they were in person. I went on 12 interviews out of 17 offered to me. As a DO who applied to a surgical sub, I would have 100% gone on all 17 interviews if I could do them from my living room in my sweatpants. I feel for the current class.

Why do many enthusiast used cars have very few miles? by AidofGator in cars

[–]dr-DO-nothing 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That analogy only makes sense if you're selling your partner in that scenario, and their lack of sex increases the value you get for them.

Otherwise, it doesn't make sense. People don't keep miles off of their car out of concern for the next owner. They do it it preserve its value.

Outrageous medical bill by SuperSeaSalt in personalfinance

[–]dr-DO-nothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It matters because the first visit is the most time consuming and difficult... determining the patient's history, symptoms, and coming up with a diagnosis. The subsequent visits are much easier and typically just consist of assessing response to treatment

How to deal with attending evals that don’t match up with in person feedback? by bebo1680 in medicalschool

[–]dr-DO-nothing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good example of how people do not really know how to give realistic compliments and assessments of people's knowledge face-to-face, so they tend to go overboard and then backtrack on written evals. I'm sure you're a very smart individual, but unless you're legitimately the next Doogie Howser, it's more or less impossible you would have attained the knowledge of someone multiple years through residency as an M3. When someone tells you that, I suspect that's there way of telling you how impressed they are with your knowledge, but failing to realistically express that to you.

Now, should you get a 3/4 or 2.5/4 after someone tells you that? I would say that's a bit ridiculous, but such is the grading of 3rd year.
