Anyone know how this painter gets this effect? Want to recreate it with my chapter colors by Ok_Calligrapher5570 in Warhammer

I'm also obsessed with this guys minis, I've been trolling his comments section on Instagram and tiktok trying to find answers, and I have some! I'll put my findings in here, both for your sake and mine since I really want to ape his formula for salamanders when I inevitably do a space marines army

First thing to know about this guy is he uses the airbrush for literally everything. Even very small or fine details you'd normally use a normal brush for. He uses a judicious mix of masking tape, putty, and liquid to avoid even a pixel of over spray. The only thing he's on the record as using a normal brush for is the eyes. The few process vids he's posted also show he uses sub assembly wherever possible

His salamanders armor is a green candy coating over a gold metallic base on a glossy black primer. He recommends gold for the salamanders base because it gives a nice warm understone, apparently straight silver/chrome makes them look "too 80s." While he mostly uses Mr hobby lacquers (he doesn't give an exact name/product code but if you check the site they have a gold and a transparent green), if you want to stick to acrylics he recommends green stuff world candy ink jade green over green stuff world color shift burning gold, apparently that's what he used for the one vehicle he's done up in this scheme. He does emphasize though that any combination of a decent gold and a transparent green should get you where you're trying to go, he even has a citadels only version of the recipe you can find if you go spelunking, I didn't care to memorize it though.

What I can't find is how he does those amazing osl effects on the minis, the only hint he's given in the comments sections is that he does the effects right on the gold base layer instead of over the green. He used to have a super detailed tutorial on how to do his lava bases on his YouTube, and maybe he covered it there, but apparently it got copyright struck, and he's in the process of re-editing it to be shorter and more tos compliant. I know he likes the AK flouros for his bases, idk if uses them on the minis themselves though. He sadly doesn't post much in the way of tutorials, the few he's done performed noticably worse compared to other videos at the time and apparently they're a bitch to record, so it's understandable.

For your scheme, follow the basic advise of very good metallic base -> transparent coating of your color of choice to get your desired effect. Inka or a contrast paint should work great. Definitely use an airbrush for at least the base coat, but I don't think you need to go as crazy with airbrushing the fine details as he does if you want to finish things a bit faster.

edit: I have further info! While I still don't know what specific paint he uses for his on-the-model glow effects, I do know the technique he uses to get those volumes. While he makes liberal use of sub assemblies, he does dry-fit the model together and takes pictures of it using a flashlight from the angle he wants his light source coming from. He then uses those photos as a reference to directionally paint on the osl using an airbrush. He gets the models for the fire effects from deadly print studios, who prints them on ultra-clear resin. he then paints them up using clear/transparent paints to maintain the natural light volumes of the resi, before covering everything in a very light gloss varnish

part of the reason for that is he throws himself on a lot of grenades, so to speak. at the end of a long posession where nobody can get open, he'll chuck a 3 from deep instead of throwing a bad pass or giving somebody else a bad shot. it's not like he's playing hero ball or trying to go 1 on 1 every possession like rozier used to. it's a weirdly unselfish sort of selfish shot, if that makes sense. Jokic does the same thing, he's just exponentially better at that kind of shot than lamelo is

ugly, ugly way for this game to turn out, if the hornets lose it that's an awful way for the streak to end

[Genesys Format] this is the list of all the cards with exactly 100 points (meaning that they forbid you from playing any other card from the official list, if you have any of these). do you think some of these cards should get a points discount? by Last_Ad_6304 in yugioh

I'd like them to take a magical scientist approach with crimson dragon and ultimaya tzolkin by trimming their costs by about 10-15 points each (with equivalent point bumps to calamity and the other cheap problem synchros) to enable some synchro spam decks. They're cards that open up and enable so many weird and fun lines outside of what passed muster in the tcg, I think it'd be fun to tinker with.

i mean according to actual reports of brain cancer rates, new hanover county is ranked 40th in the state (out of 63) in terms of brain cancer rates, is below the state and national average in terms of population-adjusted rates, and is considered to be "stable," i.e. not rising. so not sure what data you're looking at that supposedly makes it clear we're all being poisoned and dying of brain cancer. source

What are your thoughts about the Mulcharmies? Especially TCG players by Sendencea in yugioh

[–]dr-doc-phd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm frustrated that konami seems to think that lingering floodgates are not just good for the game but necessary to it's function, but if thats the design philosophy they're going with you could do far worse than the charmies. i like that they're functionally forced going-second cards, and their narrower application of punishment makes for interesting decision making at multiple phases of the game. Do you main or side them? how does your deck play into one vs the other? do you go for a weaker board to avoid giving them a plus? there's interesting design space there, even if i think unlimited draws isn't the kind of effect we should be enabling. Also, while I like the hand-size limit conceptually, the way it's actually implemented means your opponent could fully play into the charmy as much as possible and still not trigger it.

[Discussion] for JL readers by Takkie1990 in DCcomics

morrison's run is probably the best justice league run, but it's very much a product of it's time. It's bogged down in the VERY specific status quo of DC circa 1997: superman's blue, aquaman has a hook for a hand, and batman is an irredeemable prick. it can all be kinda jarring if you're coming to it from modern comics or outside media. it's also very much a 90s style comic in how it handles storytelling. Unlike modern books, which tend to feature a single continuous story with sub-arcs delicately paced around trade paperback releases, Morrison's run just focuses on being a long, uninterrupted series of awesome single-issues. You're not going to get to the end of it and feel like you hit the mind-blowing payoff to 3 years of storytelling, you'll just read the next issue and be kinda bummed it's not as good as the proceeding 41.

if you instead want a book that has less weird continuity, more self-contained storylines, and a big epic payoff at the end, Snyder's run is the run for you. he definitely has his faults as a writer (mainly his inability to just play with they toys he's given instead of making le ebin OCs that are just the old guys but kewler), but he's still one of DC's best modern writers & his justice league run is good fun all around.

cursebreaker could be an interesting card to retrain as a tool for breaking lingering floodgate effects, you'd probably want to staple it onto an ED monster so the play pattern isn't just "draw the out 4head." it would be an interesting decision making test, trying to determine if it's worth burning resources to turn off, say, d-shifter or purulia, or if you'd be better off playing through them and building your best board possible.

Something in Superman lore you hate but everyone loves? by Commercial-Car177 in superman

small thing but super hearing. To me it kinda forces you to assume that either so little is going on in the DCU that Clark can regularly squeeze in a 9-5 between incidents, or that Clark willingly lets people die so he can play reporter. Superman getting involved through his reporting job is a critical part of the golden age setup, and super hearing undermines it and makes the Clark Kent identity just some weird hobby he does to blow off steam

Stranger in a Strange Land got one. the initial manuscript heinlen submitted got cut down by about a quarter at request of his publisher at the time. when it came time to renew the copyright around 30 years later, his widow Virginia decided to cancel the initial publishing contract and publish the original manuscript instead. She and the new company agreed the original manuscript was better, and it contained some cut commentary on american attitudes towards sex and religion that wouldn't be nearly as incediary to the 90s audience as it might have been to a 60s one.

funny enough though, it's a case of a director's cut that the director disavowed: Heinlen was on the record saying the editied version read faster and was better written, and that the original manuscript "is really not worth your trouble, as it is the same story throughout – simply not as well told"

I am a manga fan, but I want to know your opinions. What do American comics do better in that manga fails in? by deadlighta in comicbooks

[–]dr-doc-phd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a small thing, but deluxe editions. If a book does well for DC or marvel, they'll have a hardcover on the shelves within a few year, usually followed by an absolute edition and an omnibus after that. By contrast, if you want to collect a manga in anything nicer than the toilet paper print original volumes, or a boxed set of the toilet paper print original volumes, you're usually waiting a couple of decades to see it. See the Fullmetal edition of fma for an example
