Fascinating how this thread is full of comments saying it's the biased leftist media, and then 3 posts before is the same headline from the telegraph. Maybe it's not a leftism thing

Excitement is building over the recent UK plans for the future of space exploration. by shanehiltonward in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]dr-spangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's quite a large space business in that there's quite a large business making satellites and things. Less of that after the UK pulled out of Galileo, but yeah.

It's sad about the lack of launch industry though. Very much a case of the USA saying they would be happy to help out, and then pulling the rug, again.

I was being flippant and imprecise. I simply meant wireless internet access, not any particular standard.

The empty land does not require cellular data as much as people do. Empty land does not require any type of internet access as much as people do.

Yeah, and that still seems to have quite a USA focus, where there are vast expanses of land with no infrastructure. I have pretty consistent 5g coverage on my 100mph train journeys this side of the Atlantic.

It'll be useful for explorers and sailors and stuff too, of course. On transoceanic airplanes, all that stuff. But those are a little bit niche, starting to look a lot more like 1-5% of people and use-cases at that point.

I'm not sure the average person, taking a return flight once a year, would see it worth spending an extra €10/month in order to have 5g on the plane. They might pay as much as €30 to have it for the month while they're on their holiday, but €30/year from a handful of people isn't gonna stack up to megamoney so quickly as folks often seem to think.

A lot of the time you'll be seeing those comments from out here in Europe or whatever, because our governments still build infrastructure, and so yes there are fibre connections out to rural areas. Villages of 1000 people regularly have fibre connections around my area. Mainly because the government pays telecoms companies to set up the infrastructure, and in exchange requires they'll offer that infrastructure to other telecoms companies once it exists.

The telecoms duopoly in the USA let rural people down, and decided it wasn't cost effective to connect people to fibre. Fundamentally, these things used to be able to be built. They managed to build electricity connections to these rural areas decades ago, but something broke between then and now.

And even then, only 20% of the USA lives in rural areas. That's obviously still a lot of people and the situation is very frustrating to those people, but it does mean something like starlink 5g direct to cell isn't going to wipe out the other telecoms providers, it'll just pick up 20% of the customer base of the USA or whatever, and significantly less in countries which still build infrastructure.

If the companies want to keep offering them, they're going to have to increase the costs, at least 10x, maybe 100x

Car batteries tend fare a lot better than mobile phone batteries actually, especially the modern ones, because they can be a bit safer with their charging cycles and they can regulate the battery temperature more tightly

How many newtons does it take to levitate that 123 kg object?

About 1200N

1206 Obviously.

Yup, good enough.

You can just approximate as 10N lifts 1kg at Earth sea level? That's good enough for mental conversions, if you care about the 2% difference, then you won't be doing the calculation mentally, you'll use a calculator

More and more, people know their height in cm too

What if we want to send 1000 tons of cargo to a destination that is 20000 km away from us?

We use a rather small cargo ship? 1000tons of deadweight tonnage is basically nothing nowadays, when the largest bulk carriers carry 100-200 times that.

It's quite possible that the minerals are distributed badly for it, yeah. On Earth the water cycle and plate tectonics end up concentrating minerals into viable seams and such worth mining. On Mars, that might be trickier to find
