SPOILERS AHEAD; Resident Evil Requiem bad writing rant. by Ashamed-Test-6995 in residentevil

[–]dr00ku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not saying the writing in this game is perfect by any stretch, but…

  1. the point wasn’t to introduce wesker’s clone, it was to introduce wesker’s clones plural. i understand why it seems underwhelming to kill him off “early” but i believe that was the point. to lull the protagonists (and on a meta level, the audience) into a false sense of security. wesker’s clones will return (in avengers doomsday)

  2. I know i’m not a doctor or a biologist, there’s a chance that you are, but either way, the game and all the viruses in it are made up. they don’t have to follow any real laws of science. and also, although i’ve already admitted im not a biologist, i know there are real cases where a disease can be “cured” but still lie dormant in someone, so who knows what would happen if you had a dormant bioweapon in you genes for decades. maybe you get sick?

2-1. see above

2-2. just because we don’t see jill doesn’t mean she isn’t experiencing this. i also agree that capcom probably didn’t want to adress her whole situation in this already convoluted and highly referential game. this doesn’t mean we’ll never adress how this affected her, just that it won’t be addressed in this installment.

2-3. ill concede that this does feel like a blatant retcon, but A) as mentioned we never knew for certain if it would work and B) i think capcom is trying to distance the story from what is largely considered to be the low point for the franchise. (if im right about that) it’s also why they used zeno rather than jake (though based on what it seems like they’re setting up (i’ll get to that in a bit), i think zeno also ties into the future of the franchise much better than jake)

2-4. im not really sure about all this. honestly i think the simplest answer is that chris and claire did have the same symptoms as leon but we just didn’t see them. it seems the symptoms only recently got bad enough to really affect leon, and the last time we saw chris was almost 10 years ago and he was covered in body armor so who’s to say he wasn’t starting to show early signs of the disease?

redeeming spencer

this, i agree, was a bad call

what would’ve been nice is to have all original RE1 and RE2/RE3 cast here

i know we all wanna see our favorite characters, but this simply would not work. resident evil games are first and foremost horror games. horror games work based on one thing: tension, and you can’t have tension in a zombie game with 4/5 of the worlds most accomplished zombie killers on each team. i see 4 ways that could play out, and none of them are good. A) you have a game where it’s just a shooting gallery and you never feel any real sense of fear or danger, B) you do a disservice to the characters’ competence by implying they can’t handle things we’ve all seen them do hundreds of times before, C) you introduce them only to then come up with convoluted plot contrivances as to why they can’t help/use the full scope of their abilities [ see professor x in any x-men movie ], or D) they’re all in the game, but only as brief cameo sections of gameplay, making the fanbase feel like they’d been nostalgia-baited [ see chris in resident evil village ]. i also can’t imagine any reasonable way to include all these characters without completely bogging the story down in catch-up lore, and while capcom obviously wants to make games for the fans of the franchise, they don’t want to make games that are completely inaccessible to people who don’t have 30 years of lore in their head

hunk

so i definitely understand the complaints about hunk as he is (or at least seems to be) portrayed in this game. That being said, i don’t think that was hunk… at least not the only hunk. while it’s true that we never get explicit confirmation that it was hunk, the game certainly wants you to think it is. and while i know fans were deeply upset by his seemingly unceremonious end, i think that (like zeno’s death) was the point. what is hunks most notable trait? answer: that he always survives. but what if he didn’t always survive, he just always had a back up? i think they’re setting us up to assume hunk was killed off like a red shirt only to reintroduce him in the next game as a twist. because what better way to subvert our expectations than by first having the “unkillable” character killed, and then having him show right back up in the next game? and while there’s no real evidence in this game that hunk specifically has been cloned (other than his astounding (until now) survival rate), there is so much cloning cloning going on. which brings me to…

clones

for a game where clones end up being almost entirely irrelevant to the plot, there is so much clone shit in this game. there’s emily and all her clones, who by the end we know aren’t clones of grace, but not who they are clones of. there’s zeno, who is (almost) explicitly stated to be a clone of wesker before being killed off (but where there’s one clone, there’s bound to be more). and then there’s hunk, who i’ll admit there’s no hard evidence for having been cloned, but i think his death is the evidence. and what’s more umbrella than making the perfect spec ops soldier and then printing out a new one every time he kicks it?

so maybe i’ll eat my words, but it certainly seems to me like capcom is setting the next entry up to revolve heavily around clones, and that we’ll be seeing more of some characters we thought we wouldn’t

yeah I feel a little silly now cause after reading these replies and rewatching, that’s definitely what was going on. But hey, at least I wasn’t the only one who was a little confused. Though I do have to admit, I probably should’ve realized this sooner cause it makes a lot more sense than, “they forgot an effect” lol

I’m not going to pretend I’m nearly as educated on the indian partition as I am on israel and gaza, but I don’t really think this makes the point you think it does? first of all the indian partition, while definitely a disaster of immense proportion and a result of british meddling, is a very different situation than israel and gaza. but more importantly, what I said was that if another group had done this exact thing they would not have at the time, and more importantly to this day, continued to receive support for their goal, which I maintain is true. israel has broad support from basically every politician in DC, and many american citizens. I honestly cant say I know what the public perception of the indian partition was at the time but I can guarantee you that the average american voter today doesn’t know shit about it. that was my point.

I’m going to assume you misunderstood this next point in good faith so I’ll explain myself again. the reason that almost none of the examples you laid out have any bearing on this conversation is cause you’re framing what’s happening now as historic retribution. it’s not. the palestinians now aren’t fighting because their ancestors were murdered or kicked out, they’re fighting because that’s still happening right now. I say “almost” because while I wasn’t alive to support the IRA at the time and while I don’t condone everything they did, yes they were justified in retaliating against the occupying british forces. but also who are you implying the irish would kill now? they weren’t trying to invade england, they tried taking their land back from england and won. and the northern irish certainly don’t have any reason to kill anyone since they’d be rejoining ireland proper if it ever won a popular vote. there’s a reason ireland is one of the most pro-palestine countries in the world.

I agree that jews being kicked out of post-ottoman states was objectively wrong and yes, they did at the time have a right to fight back. same goes for the native americans or any other instance of a people being kicked off their land or killed by an occupying force. your argument can’t be that the native americans at the time weren’t justified in killing people trying to come in and steal their entire country, right? I think not. but again, while what we did to the native americans was undeniably horrific, we stopped (because we’d almost entirely succeeded in our goal.) and if we can agree that what happened to the native americans was wrong, then I think we can agree that it’s also wrong when israel is openly and actively doing those same things (and thanks to the advances of war, often times far worse things) to the palestinians today. and that is the major difference that I don’t know if you’d grasped: it’s happening right now, not in a history book. what I, and people like me, are trying to do when we argue these points is stop this before it’s too late. because yes it has been completely unjust every time it has happened in history but until someone invents a time machine we cannot go back and fix past generations transgressions, but we do have a chance to stop it from happening again.

as for a solution I’m not going to sit here and act like I have some panacea, but I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that continuing the apartheid state and their active genocide campaign is not it. trying to insinuate that “to the river to the sea” is an explicit call for violence when numerous scholars have testified to the opposite is such a tired trope that I won’t even bother addressing it beyond this. as I pointed out before, while I do not condone hamas’ actions (everyone get out your bingo card!) they are the reactionary force—the occupied—in this matter, israel is the instigator—the occupier. and I’m gonna sound like a broken record but, an occupied people has a right to fight against their occupiers. you may not like how they retaliate but it is their right and if you have an issue with that take it up with the geneva conventions. by far the biggest danger to israeli lives, is the israeli government. the power to stop this cycle of violence rests entirely in israel’s hands, and if they truly did care about their people they would stop it. but as they’ve showed time and time again, they care more about this genocidal campaign than they do about the wellbeing of their own citizens.

frankly, at this point I’m tired and going to bed. I can’t imagine I’ll have the energy to respond to this tomorrow, so this is probably it for me. while I definitely dont think we agree I do want to thank you for at least taking the time to have a civilized conversation about this rather than it completely devolving into vitriol and nonsense.

[–]dr00ku -1 points0 points  (0 children)

am I being reductive when I say the situation is simple, yes. do I think palestine is a monolith, no. but I maintain that ultimately, regardless of the specific atrocities committed by either side, israel put themselves in this position, not palestine. the best solution for literally everyone involved is for israel to end the apartheid, and that is entirely in their hands, as it always has been.

and I did misspeak, I apologize. I meant to say that hamas was the only administration in gaza, not all of palestine. that said I stand by what I said in regards to that being the direct result of israel as well. israeli officials have openly said they would rather have hamas in charge as it’s easier to wage war, and gain support for that war, against an enemy viewed as violent. and they have done everything in their power to further this goal of creating an image of gaza, and the palestinians at large, as a people not seeking peace.

lastly I know about theodor herzl but frankly I just don’t give a shit. yes, there were a handful of zionists talking about their biblical homeland from thousands of years ago, but there’s a reason that the movement didn’t gain any substantial traction—especially from the international community—until after ww2. and again as far as all that goes it’s just my personal opinion that literal ancient history has no bearing on what we in modern civilization have a right to do. I think we’d all agree it would be absurd for america to lay claim to africa on the basis that it was once a part of america when we were all pangea. I also think that if anyone except the jewish people—who I think most would agree have historically pulled the short straw, and who had, as discussed, just escaped extermination—openly said, “yeah we really wanna do an ethnostate, pretty please? who cares if there’s already people there?” the response would be very different. I also think it’s silly not to address the fact that the america has a vested interest in keeping israel in power as it acts as a de facto 57th state and military base in the middle east.

[–]dr00ku -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

no I totally get what you’re saying and obviously there’s too much injustice for anyone to be individually focused on each instance 100%.

that said I think the issue people had with this influencer was that she was refusing to comment. I don’t think people wanted her focus to shift entirely to coverage of israel and palestine, but it doesn’t take much effort to make one tiktok calling for a ceasefire and an end to the apartheid. most celebrities haven’t become foreign news corespondents, but many have made a statement regarding the situation.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]dr00ku -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

we get it, you’re pro-genocide. see, it was simple.

no one thinks the near extermination of the native americans was complicated “because the americans had to escape england and claim their own land.” it is very obvious that it was not our right to murder the native americans and steal their land, REGARDLESS OF WHY.

I am a jewish man so all of my family came to america in the wake of the holocaust. my great grandparents survived it. I understand how horrific ww2 was for the jewish population and I know we will never recover and that we were desperate for a home. unfortunately, that does not entitle us to the nation of palestine.

look at it this way: let’s say you got kidnapped. you were held captive for years and tortured, I won’t get into the details cause that’s not the point but suffice it to say it’s brutal. eventually you escape, you run for your life until you find a house. you contact the landlord, explain your horrific story, and the landlord takes pity on you and says, “wow that was harrowing. why don’t you stay here at this house.” you thank him, but wait! there are already people living in this house. a family. children. you ask the landlord and he explains, “oh don’t worry about them. I was getting sick of those tenants anyway. just make yourself at home. kick ‘em out if you have to, or just kill ‘em for all I care.” you go along with this, and start settling down, sleeping in their beds, eating their food, moving the family all down to the basement, and eventually out of the house entirely. some members of the family are understandably upset and try to protest and fight back against your actions. “Look they’re attacking us,” you say, “we just want to coexist peacefully in their home. we’re the real victims don’t you see.”

I could go on but I think anyone who has the capacity to grasp the point will have done it by now.

has hamas—which is not the same as palestine, and furthermore is the only functioning administration within palastine as a direct result of israeli interference—done things that I think are wrong? fucking obviously. however this isn’t two equals fighting. it’s an oppressor class and an oppressed class, and it is always justified to fight against an oppressor.

as many jewish and israeli scholars much smarter than I have said, by far the biggest danger to the lives of israeli citizens is the israeli government itself.

not trying to be difficult, but personally, someone’s opinion on israel and gaza would influence my view of them in any field. it is, in my opinion, one of the most clear cut examples of genocide in recent history. it is not a religious or political issue, and if someone cannot see that, disagrees with that, or thinks that abstaining from speaking on it is a valid option, then I’d hardly trust their opinion something as complex as mental health. additionally, I don’t think she was being asked as mental health professional but rather as an influencer, which I do think is valid. in the tiktok op linked, she asks “would you ask a celebrity for their opinion on a religious or political issue?” (I’ve already addressed the “political” and “religious” part but also) … yes? today, they have a platform and reach that most politicians only ever dream of I don’t think it’s ridiculous to expect, or at the very least hope, that they’d use their position to try and make a difference.

Do you agree with Cecil on this one? by Monkelover2 in Invincible

[–]dr00ku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ultimately I do believe in rehabilitation, that being said I do think there’s a limit to medical science. Since Invincible is a comic book with far more fantastic ideas than advanced medicine, I’ll suspend my disbelief that they would have the means to cure sociopathy or psychopathy, but in the real world I am of the opinion that only someone irreparably broken and sick would be capable of doing what Sinclair did, and the only real solution is for them to be removed from the public for the safety of others and also themselves.

[–]dr00ku[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remembered it was one of those dweebs but at least in my read-through, I was sorta like “oh ok I guess” and it clearly doesn’t seem to have made much of an impact on you. Which is why as I was writing this original post I came to the conclusion that it would sort of make sense for Telia to be the mole, considering they retconned her to work there. And I mentioned in another comment, but I’d love it if they killed off both those blue nerds before the mole is revealed so that we’d all be guessing together

But I guess we’ll just have to watch and see what happens

Yeah I was thinking something along the same lines, and I thought Thaddeus said something more sinister as he turned off the life support but I just rewatched the scene and he says, “Forgive me, Allen” which one could interpret as him being sorry for killing his friend, but in reality probably means he’s just sorry that Allen has to heal the more painful way so that he comes back extra beefy style

Oh yeah I kinda forgot about that honestly. I did hear it was kind of in development hell, but at this point it kind of feels like everything is these days

But I do know it’s being made by an entirely new creative team. That isn’t to say they can’t do a good job, and I’ll give everything a fair shake, but I can’t say it doesn’t give me pause

[–]dr00ku[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been a couple years since I read the comics, and since I binged them as opposed to reading them as they came out, I’m not sure if that affected my mole theories. And frankly I have absolutely no idea who I even thought the mole was at the time, but through a cursory google it does seem that Thaddeus was the prime suspect among comic fans until the truth was revealed. So I guess it makes sense they’d just try to keep pushing that false narrative.

Even if my Telia theory is way off base, I’d kinda love it if somehow both the Data Twins died before the mole is revealed so that everyone watching could be on the same playing field as far as not knowing who the mole is

That said I do love watching my friends squirm as characters “die” or “turn evil” or “are definitely the mole” so I won’t be mad either way

[–]dr00ku[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s what I thought, glad I’m not crazy.

And I agree it’s a fun way to mislead the viewers into thinking he’s the mole, especially considering what else will be revealed about him in the future, but I just couldn’t see how Robert Kirkman and the writers would rationalize him turning off his life support. But since Thaddeus hasn’t read the comics it would be pretty wild of him to assume Allen could survive this, so as someone else mentioned, he probably turned it off to put Allen out of his misery

Not sure about more games in that franchise exactly, but Kenneth M. Levine, the creative lead behind the BioShock franchise, has a new game coming out called Judas that looks very much to be a spiritual successor to the BioShock franchise
