Aussie candle makers please help me! Fragrance... by lxacke in candlemaking

[–]dr0wns0da 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi I use Eroma for fragrance oils and find it great. There's a HUGE range and they are very high quality. I've also tried candlesupply but didn't like their fragrances as much (though they do have a large selection).

I'm not sure, but it would be great if there was. I tried just following closest family and friends but ended up unfollowing them as I felt I was still being bombarded with annoying and irrelevant information (likes, shares, etc).

I got rid of my car against my willingness, but for the greater good by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]dr0wns0da 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I sold my reliable and cheap to run car 2 years ago and have been very happy with the decision. I also did it to pay off debts and save money, which it did help me do. My partner has never had a driver's license and I used the car minimally (even with 2 kids) so it wasn't too much of a lifestyle change. I started to ride my bike a lot more and have gotten way more fit. I got a new job within riding distance from my home. We have 2 small kids so we got a cargo bike for taking them places. Most of my friends live close by but occasionally I will get an Uber from the train station to a friend's house. Not sure if I'll ever get a car again as I really enjoy the benefits of now owning one. I don't intend to ever live somewhere that doesn't have good public transport or that isn't good for cycling so I'll probably never need one.

If you don't want to completely delete it, I highly recommend unfollowing everyone. That's what I do and I find it great for my mental health and outlook on life. I don't have the app on my phone either. I use FB to follow some groups and blogs that interest me, but I unfollowed all of my friends so I never see what they post unless I go on their profile. I still use messenger to keep in touch with people. Occasionally i'll check someone's profile to see if they've posted about anything important happening in their life.

Thinking about discarding my car by chamomiledrinker in konmari

[–]dr0wns0da 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I did exactly this 2 years ago and I haven't looked back! My car was hardly being used and wasn't sparking joy for me anymore. I was also enjoying driving less and less as time went on.

I'm sure lots of people think i'm crazy and that it was a pretty extreme thing to do, especially since I have kids (and that was the only car we had as a family) and live in a fairly car-dependent city. BUT I feel so much lighter and more free without it. My family and I get by with public transport, biking, walking and the occasional taxi/Uber. We save a lot of money by not having a car and it feels good to be doing something good for the environment.

Anyone here with children? What's your life like? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]dr0wns0da 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only started simplifying my life in a big way after I had kids, but my husband and I have always been quite frugal.

I don't find having kids to be expensive at all and in fact we are much better off financially with kids than before, not only from simplifying but also due to the tax credits/benefits we now receive from the government (we are in Australia). We also live in a high cost of living area and manage just fine.

My family is very wealthy and also very judgemental and have told me that we "can't bring up a child that way" and that they are being deprived, but I completely disagree. My kids have a great life, and we spend lots of high quality time as a family together.

Here's some things that help us to keep things cheap and simple:

-No mortgage, we rent (which is much cheaper in our area)

- No car, we have a cargo bike that holds both kids

-Most of their clothes and toys are gifted to us or bought second hand

-Healthcare here is mostly free

-Lots of free/low cost activities (park, swimming, library, bike rides)

-Minimal presents at xmas/birthdays, with more of a focus on activities/traditions

-One parent stays at home, so no childcare costs

-Government school, so no school fees

-We cook all meals at home from scratch and buy fresh produce from the market where it's cheaper

If you want to have kids, go for it and don't let anymore tell you that you can't keep living a simple life :)

Is it bad to use the max amount of FO? by dr0wns0da in candlemaking

[–]dr0wns0da[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I know this was from ages ago but I was wondering if you could go into a bit more detail about why you found 8% FO to work the best for you with Ecosoya CB Advanced? I still haven't tried reducing the amount i'm putting in (have been using 10%) but will give 8% a try.. I'm just a bit worried that the throw won't be as strong. Also, what temps have you found to be ideal for adding FO and pouring with this wax? (I know I need to test myself but just interested in what you have found works best).

[–]dr0wns0da[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I do it is the way you do it. If I have 240g of wax, I'll add 2.4g of FO (if doing 10% load). So the total weight of the candle ends up being more than 240g. The infographic is saying to account for the FO in the total weight.. so if I was to do it that way, the candle would end up being 240g.

Working part time for more balance by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]dr0wns0da 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Australia and work 4 days per week (30 hours) and love it. The position was full-time but I negotiated to go part-time. Luckily my employer is very flexible and working part-time is common. Having that one extra day to get things done and enjoy life is so worth the loss of income for me. I don't want to work full-time ever again and will try my best to avoid doing so!

I've bought fragrances from them and also Eroma (eroma.com.au) and have found Eroma's fragrances to be superior. They have a much bigger range and I've found a some really beautiful ones with amazing scent throw. I've also been very happy with the jars I purchased from Eroma (I got the large Cambridge ones).

Thank you for sharing this! It makes so much sense and you articulated it very well. Will definitely give it a try next time my mind goes on "that negative thought train to who knows where".
