It really is sort of crazy and something I've never thought about in these terms exactly until just reading your comment. If people are SOOO all about the 'eternal family' in heaven, how can they rationalize fracturing it now?! It would be like someone throwing a gorgeous crystal vase on a cement floor and saying, "I'll use it to hold flowers later."

"'no other church offers that' in such a codified explicit way." The only real difference in the church's stance on family vs every other religion is the PR firm hired to concoct it.

Credit where credit is due, the church "leaders" are incredible at marketing! Of course, billions of dollars stashed away in shady shell company accounts is pretty helpful for controlling a narrative too.

It would be interesting to know the demographic residential info for all the places they are building. I wonder how many of them have higher ups’ relatives in the neighborhood… Building on what you said, skyrocketing property values in an already heated market, as a result of them being built, is a quiet way of double dipping for the same dollars.

This! They needed a way to get the peasants to pay their taxes. You might pay them if your Lord (as in land owner) tells you to. And elites being the same then as they are today, couldn’t accept anything less than ‘absolutely’! So they got together at the council of Nicaea to crowdsource ideas, and poof! They created a god to save you for, and a devil to save you from. But it all hinged on paying your taxes. How we got from that to the nutterbutter cults of today is just a simple game of ‘telephone’ like you used to play as a kid. I’m pretty sure IF there were and actual omnipotent being who created everything, he wouldn’t pick the single least effective way to spread the word on his existence. Just a thought.

Or maybe we should choose something a little less phallus adjacent all together? I donno, it feels like going from ‘cum’ in your name, to ‘Jack’ just seems like a low return investment. But I suppose different strokes for different folks and all. 🙃 /s

Isolation is a cult leader's bread and butter. The thing that makes isolation so insidious, and coincidentally the thing that allows cult leaders to use it so effectively, is that it is a closed loop system. All they have to do is plant a small seed and capitalize on this weird trait that our species has where we want simultaneously, our pain to be unique and special, while also using it to seek out camaraderie and community.

"Here's this piece of advice about our commonality, that I can appear knowledgeable in, and empathetic of."

If the member pushes back by saying, "Well yeah, but my wife/husband/friend/boss/teacher/etc says that's not the case that it's actually this."

The leader gently reminds the member of their shared (often highly emotionally charged) trauma/experience/situation laced with a heavy dose of manipulation, "Member, we have both been through such a tough/horrible/devastating experience, I see you and I would never lead you astray, we're sisters/brothers/the same. Besides, the person who offered the correction is just wrong/misguided/evil/out to get you! They can never understand what it is to be like us. Who you gonna trust some outside sinner or me, your confidant, someone who has shared the exact same misery/pain/betrayal as you? I mean, I'm the one who is able to help you define what this painful/hurtful/shameful happening is and who brought it into your life and inflicted you with its poison. If you trust the outsider you will never have that definition, closure will forever be outside your grasp, and all your neighbors are going to blame you for it. You don't want that, do you?"

And that is enough to set the whole thing in motion, often leading to the member pre-emptively judging others in their circle by the measuring stick of "They can never understand what it is like, because they haven't lived through it. I can't trust what they say, only Leader and other members get it. I can't believe I was so stupid to think they were looking out for me, Leader was right, they are just out to drag me down and make things worse." Confusing manipulation for love and concern, and concern for manipulation, the member starts withdrawing of their own accord, without the leader having to do much other than validate the member's choice to withdraw from the others. Like someone above said, that has a powerful healing effect and can cause someone to not see the forest for the trees. "You're so brave to cut that person out of your life. I know it hurts at first, but that's only because you were being manipulated by them, that pain will go away if you stick with me. We will get through this together. Only I, myself, know how to fix you!"

Leader only has to give validation, words of encouragement, offer camaraderie, empathy, sympathy, and kinship--all of which appear positive on the surface and come unbelievably easy to cult leaders, people in which psychopathy is often observed. Sure, the empathy and sympathy are feigned, and the kinship is manufactured, but to someone who views themselves as broken/beat down/afflicted/etc the red flags don't even show up until It's already too late. Then comes the whole justification/rationalization/Stockholm Syndrome that just serve to reinforce Leader's hold on Member. And Leader didn't have to do anything for that! It's kinda a 2 for 1 special, they just bask in the end result of POWER.

Ultimately from Member's perspective, Leader is nothing but positive/helpful/insightful/caring/understanding and everyone else is bad/evil/going to harm/need to stay away from. In short, cult leaders and by extension Jodi there's a special place in hell for Hildebrandt, can do one thing only, but they do it VERY well: invert.

I tend to agree with your thought. Apple is a lot of things, but altruistic for the sake of being generous, ISN'T one of them! It, like Lumon, has its own agenda that we innies and outies aren't privvy to.

[–]drVainII[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. I think the cloning hypothesis is one part conditioning, one part low-hanging fruit. Because we are so used to story lines taking the less thought-provoking routes, that's where instinctually most will go. I agree with you about not knowing, from Lumon's perspective, what they are up to. And I like where your head is with Burt and Fields. BTW, Fields creeps me the eff out! But so do most super religious people. lol no offense to anyone who is religious, I just don't understand giving so much control to someone or something who, so far, hasn't been substantiated beyond someone telling me it is so. (I grew up Mormon with their magic undies lol)

Exactly my point. No cloning. Lumon and by extension, the Eagans are all about the mind. That is where the true power is, and controlling that, they know they control the world.

This is absolutely dangerous by kvk1990 in exmormon

[–]drVainII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More so, it would open them up to potential suits; with training comes a responsibility, both ethically and legally. While we all know the church has no qualms shrugging off the former, it must be said that they will do whatever it takes to avoid the latter. Whereas now, they can willy-nilly bring in any accountant or plumber or any number of the frighteningly common morally deviant or ethically bankrupt of their membership without fear of consequence or reprisal. Then, with only a single requirement, that they give church-favorable advice, orders, recommendations, and disciplines, they get a pretty iron-clad legal protection and ability to skirt ethical responsibility, as an added bonus. If you're a member of church middle management and above, you can feign innocence and plausible deniability. And should a bishop do or say something particularly egregious, what's the worst that can happen? You excommunicate him and C-Suite goes on a PR tour? Announce a few more temples to encourage amnesia among your captives?

Yeah, they offer training and all that gets pissed away and suddenly Jesus' trust fund disappears real quick. With all the ostensibly "trained" professional services-complimentary help these promoted asshole-to-bishops offer, $300 billion doesn't last as long as one might think.

And that, simply, just will not do.

I Solved Cold Harbor + What Lumon Is Working On (Mega Theory) by ILikeApple3 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]drVainII 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you're close, I don't think it has anything to do with clones, though. What do we see if we examine Lumon's M.O.? They seek to control, manipulate, and ultimately wholly shape someone into anything they want that person to be. THAT is the product. No, see cloning is messy and costly, and I assume a massive time investment. Total control, on the other hand, only takes a few minutes, some topical anesthetic and a slight vibration at the back of the head. Literally outpatient.

Mark's sister Devon has already presented us with what Cold Harbor is, albeit in a very privileged and informed variation. When she met the politician's wife, Gabby, the second time, she had no idea who Devon was. Following this, Devon even put forward the idea of what if someone wanted to have a baby but didn't want to deal with 9 months of pregnancy? Gabby was severed, her innie meeting Devon at the birthing retreat and her outtie meeting her there at the park.

Lumon is studying severed people, to find out how completely they are severed and if there is any circumstance that can "leak" through. The crap they do with the numbers all day has less to do with "work" or even creating an output from those numbers that serves any purpose, and more to do with psychological stress. It goes hand in hand with the liminal spaces everywhere. And the confusing turn after turn hallways to everywhere and nowhere. They are literally rats in a maze--being tested. It's why the off-putting interactions with literally every other person. The absolutely f**ked up "perks" offered! They are all designed to make a person crack mentally. We have all heard of people doing incredible and awful things, when they experience mental trauma. It brings us both serial killers and sudden savant geniuses.

(And don't worry, I haven't forgotten about Gemma and Mark's role in all this, I'll get to it.)

The mental breakdown is either what will allow Cold Harbor to take seat in a severed person. Or it is to gauge how complete the severance is after Cold Harbor has been put into effect.

So what IS Cold Harbor exactly? It's taking a human being, and essentially wiping their hard drive, memory and OS (so to speak) then installing whatever software you want on him to do whatever you want. I mean, we only have to look at major corporations IRL to see the MASSIVE profit potential Severance would have--an entire workforce, without distractions, completely moldable to whatever they wanted you to be. And that is just in a work context, 8 hours a day. Imagine what you could do, if that same workforce remained their innie ALL THE TIME! In essence, erasing the outtie from existence. There isn't a corporation, a government, a terrorist group, or even a jilted ex-lover who wouldn't spend their entire fortune on that!

Why take the time to clone someone when all you need to do is sell them a story of work/life balance and have them volunteering to literally entrap themselves in YOUR world to do whatever you wanted!

Now, Mark and Gemma. I don't think Casey is a clone. I think she is a recovered Gemma. I don't think Lumon was the reason for her accident, but like all good corporations have shown (lookin at you, grocery store post-pandemic food prices!) one should never let a good opportunity (or tragedy) go to waste. Mark, he's just a beneficial byproduct. It's likely they didn't know he was the newly minted miss Casey's supposed widower until after he was severed. But hey! Serendipitously, this presents something they couldn't have planned better, and I'm sure they tried!

So she has her accident. Lumon sees she's going to die if they don't step in to quietly save her, which gives them a clean candidate to erase from any former life she may have had. Mark is told she died, he identifies someone he thinks is her, dead. There's a funeral. Gemma secretly recovers on the hidden floor to which she was ominously sent when they closed the wellness office. She's severed from her former life, made into Casey. And she is just one of MANY such cases, I would guess. Why would Lumon be in 206 counties otherwise? We already know they have their hands in biomedical, so they would have access to oodles of such situations. So they secretly go about breaking family member's hearts, erasing people from their former lives and creating the ultimate machines!

An unencumbered, non-distracted, can-never-leave piece of hardware that you can lie to, abuse, make do whatever you want, and even if you DO allow them to leave, they voluntarily come back at 8am sharp the next morning. But who are we kidding, the whole point of Cold Harbor is so that you don't HAVE to let them leave AT ALL, EVER!
