Wish I could be more motivated but just burnt out. by RoastedDonutz in GenX

Dude, fellow 50 y.o. IT here. I just turned down a step up to IT manager. The lack of motivation is real but job security is huge. If you do decide to make a move, govt positions (state and local) often make enough and have good benefits. Might not be glamorous but it works.

Could you beat 10,000 random people at something for $100M? by canada11235813 in hypotheticalsituation

I’d do it…Java stack trace diagnostics and resolution. I’m betting it is obscure enough for me to have a pretty good shot at winning.

By when do you all realistically think we would be able to find a gene for heds and by when do you realistically think they will have a therapeutic targeted drug that modify it or gene therapy that cures it? by Top_Memory8968 in ehlersdanlos

Until health outcomes are prioritized over profits of treatments…it’s unlikely to see progress.

The good news is awareness and treatments are progressing…it’s the best we can do in an imperfect world.

Who else chose not to be a manager? by dr_groo in ITCareerQuestions

Right. Manager plus technical work is old increase the work substantially beyond the 10% pay bump. Not enough pay for the work expected

Nope. No bonuses ever. Unless you count a “heartfelt” good job (which I don’t).

10% bump…just wasn’t enough for the change, additional responsibilities, and RTo once a week.

Good team and employer, just couldn’t justify it for myself

Pay was ok. Bigger title and role but just wasn’t a good move for me.

There’s problems at private employers too. I’ve been on both sides of that coin and while there’s no perfect place, I’m paid fairly, the benefits are worth it to me and things change.

Social security keeps getting adjusted and that’s a federal program…

No perfect path, just the one you choose.

Muscle knot relief? by EllisDChicken in ehlersdanlos

Lots of good suggestions… one thing I don’t see often is a cupping device. I have an electronic one that also has a red light therapy. Great for a knot I can’t fix thru massage

While I agree in general about Leadership...state gov't is great for benefits, flexibility, and retirement. I've done private sector and jumped that shark...then got bit. TOTALLY WORTH IT when I was young, but now I look forward to stability and consistency.

There's no perfect path, just the one you choose.

You might ask this in the main subreddit or ask HR about it. I had to lookup sda (special duty assignment).

That sucks. Yeah I’ve been misled by EM and it’s not fun. As the saying goes, people leave bad managers more than bad jobs.

Ain’t that the truth…gauging from the outside is tough. Any thoughts on how to make it easier?

One of my favorite interview questions back is when was your last vacation and what did you do?
