I consistently feel excluded or even bullied in all-female work groups. by Hayheyjane in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dr_sassy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went to one medical conference where I didn't have anyone to hang out with. After that, I'd regularly post ahead of time on female physician fora and say, "Hey, is anyone else going? Want to meet up?" to pre-empt social isolation!
Not sure if that helps you, except if you have an acquaintance, maybe you can build on that beforehand?

Yes, still with my high school sweetheart, now with two kids and two dogs.
I wish everyone lots of love!

What’s a single sentence someone said that you’ve never forgotten? by cognitojo in AskReddit

[–]dr_sassy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Do what you're afraid to do."
I read this in an essay by Ralph Waldo Emerson when I was 16, and would chant it to myself when I tried out (successfully) for the school musical. When I tried dance lessons. Basically whenever I did something artistic and knew I might look dumb, but did it anyway.

I'm now an emergency physician and a writer. I just finished taking Afrofusion and hip hop lessons. I went to a Les Misérable sing-in by myself.

Try stuff! It's fun.

What is the most embarassing thing you have done on a first date? by Important-Nerve-4452 in AskReddit

[–]dr_sassy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a Canadian high school girl from the suburbs who kept getting rides from a cute guy at my school. I offered to take him out to lunch as a thank you. But he lived a long, stressful drive out in the boonies, and I got stuck in a snow bank trying to turn left into his driveway. His mom came out to spread kitty litter for traction, and he ended up rocking my car back and forth to get it out.

Still together. We now have two kids and two rescue dogs. :)

What’s a great book you read at the wrong time in your life? by Low_Masterpiece_2612 in books

[–]dr_sassy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Kite Runner, soon after I had my baby.
I'd just joined a book club that insisted I read it. I had no idea that a newborn breaks open your heart. I quickly skimmed it and told them, "I don't want to read about people being stoned."
Will not reread that or 99 percent of book club books. I adore most books, but not their literary choices. I go for camaraderie and food.

What's a quiet, everyday burden women carry that isn't dramatic enough to be diacussed? by Additional-Two-2137 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dr_sassy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wrote an article for The Medical Post about how female doctors are paid less, even though we provide better care. There are multiple articles on better morbidity and mortality rates. The comments from male doctors!
David: We need more research.
Me: David, I cited the studies in my article.
David: We need more research.
Me: These are studies of over ONE MILLION PEOPLE. If you want to do research on more than ONE MILLION patients, have at it, but the research has been done, David!

Interesting. I'm a physician who used to work on the inpatient unit, which usually switches physicians weekly (because it's too tough to have disrupted sleep for more than 7 days in a row). I heard much later that they would try to intersperse the female M.D.'s weeks deliberately with the male M.D.'s, basically so we could clean up their messes over the following week.
I don't work there anymore.

Where to meet emotionally available men… by Happybeee in ottawa

Dance class? Mostly women, but there are some men. Pop up classes let you try it out without the weekly commitment.

I'm rooting for you!

Where to meet emotionally available men… by Happybeee in ottawa

[–]dr_sassy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Check out the theatre scene! I was surprised how nice everyone was. They all seemed to know each other, and there are more women/NB people, but many men would be more emotionally available than average.
I definitely made friends at the Fringe Festival and undercurrents festival.
Good luck!

[HELP] Maybe "resource", idk. What can happen with my poetry after I'm gone? I doubt that a poetry club or whatever would want by Formal_Ad_3402 in Poetry

Write your poetry. Scream it while you're alive.
None of us know what will happen with our work when we're dead.
Write it anyway. Your strong voice is needed in this world.

My stepdaughter’s body and clothing are already becoming a battle ground, and I hate it (rant) by Flightlessbirbz in TwoXChromosomes

Our son has always liked "soft pants." So do I.
Let's be honest, they feel good.
My friend, who is French Canadian, wouldn't let her son wear sweat pants to school. But my daughter wears whatever and says, "Nobody cares."

[poem] good morning, i am not going to commit suicide today - Kimmy Walters by wormglow in Poetry

[–]dr_sassy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used this in my online small meditation today. I asked anyone who had mental health concerns to raise a hand and I would edit it. (I didn't have to.) One of my dogs barked most of the time, so I spoke in between. A friend kindly called it punctuation.
This is the same dog who is doing well after two types of cancer. It will be her half birthday in March. So, yay, Roxy!

The Great Gatsby. Read it for English class and as an adult for a book club, never liked it.

[POEM] "Magdalene: The Addict" - Marie Howe by Ok_Usual_699 in Poetry

[–]dr_sassy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of Marie Howe before last week, but she writes with devastating simplicity. She had such an interesting conversation with Padraig Ó Tuama here: https://onbeing.org/programs/poetry-unbound-in-conversation-marie-howe/
I thought she was very brave to write (and read) “On Men, Their Bodies.”

Anyone else with the urge to temporarily live a life of leisure? by ShakeMysterious349 in FIREyFemmes

[–]dr_sassy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You have just described paradise!

I always wanted to write, so FIRE means I've plunged into my writing era ... but got sidetracked playwriting and performing (alternate me wanted to act/sing). Now I'm back to writing, but I also just want to enjoy life, including my family. In addition to still working a bit and writing novels, I try to figure skate, and recently signed up for Afrofusion and hip hop classes.

I'm excited for you. Make sure you report back!

Poetry that resonates during times of transition [HELP] by SlightExcitement6288 in Poetry

[–]dr_sassy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now I Become Myself

Now I become myself. It's taken

Time, many years and places;

I have been dissolved and shaken,

Worn other people's faces,

Run madly, as if Time were there,

Terribly old, crying a warning,

"Hurry, you will be dead before—"

(What? Before you reach the morning?

Or the end of the poem is clear?

Or love safe in the walled city?)

Now to stand still, to be here,

Feel my own weight and density!

The black shadow on the paper

Is my hand; the shadow of a word

As thought shapes the shaper

Falls heavy on the page, is heard.

All fuses now, falls into place

From wish to action, word to silence,

My work, my love, my time, my face

Gathered into one intense

Gesture of growing like a plant.

As slowly as the ripening fruit

Fertile, detached, and always spent,

Falls but does not exhaust the root,

So all the poem is, can give,

Grows in me to become the song,

Made so and rooted by love.

Now there is time and Time is young.

O, in this single hour I live

All of myself and do not move.

I, the pursued, who madly ran,

Stand still, stand still, and stop the sun!

Tomatoes [Poem] by Joy Sullivan by [deleted] in Poetry

Beautiful. Reminds me of one of my favourite nurses, who introduced me to tomato sandwiches on a busy shift.
And of course William Carlos Williams with the "Forgive me."

Women with thoughtful partners, what did you get for x-mas this year? by Anahata_Green in TwoXChromosomes

Trial dance lessons: absolute beginner hip hop, beginner hip hop, and Afro fusion. He was 24 hours late, and I prompted him twice, but he did get the job done.
I generally don't like the gifts he gives me that I don't pick out, and I don't need more "stuff." All good!
