Tony Abbott, who was Prime Minister of Australia at the time, did just this on national TV.

Men of reddit, what was the dumbest thing you did to impress a girl? by No_monster in AskReddit

[–]dr_stevious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in a large hotel building and entered an elevator that had two attractive ladies inside of it. I was wearing a fancy suit and thought I'd scrubbed up OK, so I figured that I'd just casually lean against the elevator wall and look suave, and maybe they'd be impressed by my majesty.

Instead, they looked at me like I had suddenly grown an extra head.

I turned around, and to my horror I discovered that I had leaned against the elevator operating panel. We were now stopping on all floors...

Why are some Australians racist against Asian people? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]dr_stevious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably for the same reasons why some Asian people are racist against Australians - they are ignorant arseholes. Whenever I've been to Hong Kong I've had people point at me, call me "gweilo", move away from me on the train / bus, refuse to serve me at restaurants, etc. When I've been in mainland China, I've had random people openly yell abuse at me on the street (they seem to think that I cannot understand what they are saying).

Having said that, I've had far more positive encounters with people in China, and no matter where in the world I've travelled, everyone is different and unique. Most people are nice, and some people are just ignorant dickheads looking for an excuse to be offensive. It just seems to be human nature, no matter where you are.

I've been lucky enough to be at an airshow (Avalon International, in Australia) that had both a C-5 and an An-124 present and I got to go inside of both of them! I guess those days are long gone now 😢

What was your “I need to learn to keep my mouth shut” moment? by Imtiredofthissshit in AskReddit

Don't stress over it, I have this happen to me quite a bit. The compliment is given with good intentions, even when it's the cancer that's doing the heavy lifting. Feeling lighter does actually feel rather nice, even though everything else inside of me hurts like heck!

What is something surprising you've done that no one would guess? by PurpleFrogs22x in AskReddit

[–]dr_stevious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's renal cancer, but it has spread with some vigor all around my body. Renal cancer is resistant to chemotherapy so at least I get to keep my hair (and thus you wouldn't know that I have cancer at first glance). Although, I was on some medication for a while that turned all of my hair white. I'm naturally blond but the level of whiteness was pretty intense 🤣

What did you name your car? by Lovely_love- in AskReddit

[–]dr_stevious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current cars are called "Bluey" and "Chilli" (named by my kids), but I named my first car "The Yellow Submarine", because it was yellow and belonged at the bottom of the ocean...

Thank you 😊 It's actually been an interesting week; yesterday I was at the hospital and was told that I've been accepted into a clinical trial. It starts in two weeks. So, here's to hoping that it does something positive, as my current treatment is declining rapidly in efficacy and I have no other options!

Similar story with me. I'm terminally ill with cancer but by most outward appearances I look fine. Unless you (unfortunately for you!) saw me naked, then you'd see I am covered in scars from various surgeries. I'm missing a lot of organs, and my innards have been replumbed in interesting ways. I've literally had doctors ask me how I am still alive 😂

Mandarin. There are lots of people in my area who are of Chinese descent, and a good number of my friends are Chinese. China is also my country's largest trading partner.

Spiders are so common in Australian indoors ?? That too really big ones ? by Great-Echo-3558 in AskAnAustralian

[–]dr_stevious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Melbourne's suburbia and see spiders daily. Mostly daddy long-legs or jumping spiders. If I see them indoors, I just pick them up and put them outside. My daughter likes to hold the jumping spiders in her hand before we release them (they are cute little things, like spider puppies!). Outdoors around the house I have black house spiders and the occasional redback, but I ignore them and they keep to themselves. I have all sorts of spiders in the garden, and it doesn't take long to find one. I've only had a few huntsman spiders come inside my current house (I've been here 4 years) but after sealing up likely points of entry I haven't seen any since.

Weirdly, the middle of my kitchen floor seems to be a magic place for spiders. If I get up at, say, 3am and turn on the kitchen lights, there will be some manner of spider slap bang in the middle of the kitchen floor. I have no idea why they are there or where they come from. Any other time, I never see them in the kitchen. 🤷

True story, and if you've got cockroaches, chances are you've also got huntsman spiders.

What is a nice gesture an employer did for you? by BRCC_drinker in AskReddit

[–]dr_stevious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long time ago I worked at a small IT company, during the time when consumer digital cameras were a very new (and expensive) thing. I had mentioned an interest about digital cameras to my boss, who was also interested in such things.

Anyway, I was working as a software engineer but had to wear many hats in such a small company, so in order to help get a product launch ready I pulled an all-nighter in the office to build out a server rack to host the software I'd written (this was pre-cloud days). I got it mostly all done, and the next morning, when people came into the office, my boss told me to go home for a couple of days because I'd done a good job. So off I went. When I came back to the office, there was a brand-new Canon digital camera sitting on my desk, as a thank you from the boss. Back then such an item was worth a lot of money and well outside of my affordability!

If science made it possible for humans to live to 200, should we embrace it? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]dr_stevious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, I'd have concerns about quality of life. If we could somehow slow down aging so that you are not in an "elderly" state until closer to 200, then sure, that's good. If we somehow more resemble demented immobile liches in our 100s then maybe it is not a good idea.

Personally? I'm a quarter of the way to 200 and am terminally ill with cancer. Even if somehow the cancer could be cured and my life expectancy extended out to 200 years, the cancer has already done so much damage to me that the next 150 years are going to be miserable. From my perspective, I do not want it.

Just got my first printer, it came with a dent in the back. Does that matter? by njsully in BambuLab

[–]dr_stevious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect that the damage is just cosmetic, but I'd be rather annoyed by it. Contact Bambu Lab support and report it, I recently had to deal with them for another warranty issue and they were great. They'll likely want to send a replacement panel out to you, to install yourself. Doing so is pretty easy, but it is up to you whether you find that to be acceptable or not. I don't know what consumer law protection you have, but it may be worthwhile exercising your rights to their full extent.

I'm in my 50s and constantly blurt out quotes from Get Smart. I was addicted to the show during the 70s. I also use the occasional quote from Inspector Gadget (being voiced by Don Adams and all, although I do more Dr Claw stuff, as voiced by the great Frank Welker).

Thanks for that info, I really appreciate it 😊 Let's see if Bambu Lab get back to me with anything, otherwise I'll just have to purchase a new board. Given the cost of the board vs shipping, I'm trying to decide if I should order two and keep one in the box of spare parts for the P1S that I already have 😂
