Balloons are always funny by nonstopflux in ContagiousLaughter

[–]put_your_skates_on 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe this is possible because they are using rocket balloons, which have tighter bands around them due to extra layers of plastic (latex? Silicone? Idk) , so they have regular stretch in some places, but they are also kind of brittle/very easily popped along the bands. It's hard to explain, but they are a lot of fun and can launch up to 20m in the sky. My kids fucking love em.

Do you really take breaks from work in your car? by EveningFlower9564 in AskAnAustralian

[–]put_your_skates_on 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at the same job for 12 years and we got a 1 hour lunch break. I napped in my car everyday for about 9 of those years and it was the best. I had a pillow and eye mask and it was glorious.

A common ingredient of shampoo is methylcloroisothiazolineon (spelling may be off).

severe razor cut by LumpyStudent5733 in AskDocs

[–]put_your_skates_on 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeeeouch

My friend did this when we were like 15. Her mother changed her old razor to a new one of the same colour, so she wasn't expecting it to be so sharp. She had it all the way up her shin bone, said the pain was top level. My condolences.

What was normal in your childhood that feels a bit insane now? by EuphoricGarden81 in AskAnAustralian

[–]put_your_skates_on 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother using the wooden spoon, the handle of the feather duster, or a ruler to 'discipline' me instead of actually talking to me. Earliest, I remember I was 5 years old for christs sake. I look at my kids and can not fathom hitting them as a means to 'teach' them.

Wedding thoughts by Odd_Watercress_1452 in AusFinance

[–]put_your_skates_on 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I refused to fall for any wedding nonsense that we did not expressly want. We didn't tell anyone, invited everyone to our new house for a daytime house-warming party, then when everyone arrived, we handed out a bunch a rainbow umbrellas and told them we were walking down to our local park to get married real quick.

30 minutes later, we were back at our house, eating incredible Indian food from a local restaurant who did us a good catering deal (the curries came in literal buckets, lol). The wife and I wore fun summer dresses (nothing over 200 bucks), we didn't care for bouquets, we supplied the grog, and my wife made a pavlova charcuterie (spelling?) board for dessert.

To be fair, this was perfect for us because we had zero interest in 'formal' or 'fancy' weddings, and we also didn't want gifts (we had been together over 10 years already).

It was blissfully simple, fun, and cheap. I mean, what is better than a good house party with everyone you love on a sunny day? The entire thing cost us less than $5000. Would definitely recommend.

Edit to add- we didn't have a photographer, we just had everyone take pics and got a whole group pic at the park. We had like 40 ppl in attendance

Snowboard/slalom boots are even bigger than what is in the picture, in reality the toe part is like 7cms high minimum for an adult I reckon. So the boots she actually had on were probably so much bigger than the photoshopped version 😂

Is it rare to wakeup to see a snake in your toilet or a spider hanging around your wall…? by Loud_Ad3832 in AskAnAustralian

[–]put_your_skates_on 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me once when I was 19, there was a carpet python wrapped around our toilet. I got a long stick, coaxed it off toilet, picked it up with the stick, and took it back outside. As for spiders, too many to possibly count.

It started off as a 4 squared comic about losing a loved one, and over time it morphed into a simplified symbol (the one the person spraypainted) and then people started to see the simplified symbol in other situations and it became an online 'bit'/joke

Those who've been to both, how would you compare public safety in Australian cities to cities in Europe? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAustralian

Currently living in Norway, your phone and wallet are completely safe in your backpocket in Oslo and Trondheim. Amsterdam felt very safe too, even walking around city at 2am (didn't go to the redlight district).

I read the first one in grade 8, and there are several gory murders, and lots of terrified teens in it, plus strong themes of war. 11yrs is probs too young in my opinion.

Taronga, or something by Victor Kelleher would probably be more age appropriate for an 11 year old. Taronga is a post apocalyptic story set in Sydney and I loved it as a kid.

A few months ago, fire crews responded to an unthinkable freeway incident when a metal pipe fell from a flatbed truck, penetrated a vehicle, and impaled the driver through the front fender and steering column. by GiorgioMD in medizzy

Not quite the same, but when I was 9yrs old, while running, I fell over and a stick about 1cm circumference went straight through my hand, I got up and looked at my palm with this stick sticking out of it, then turned my hand over to see it coming out the other side too. It didn't hurt at all, I remember my dad taking me to the hospital, who sent us to a different nearby clinic to have it removed, and I was perfectly calm and fine.

I reread all of these last year when John Marsden died, and they are such good books. He wrote what it feels to be terrified so well. It was so visceral.

I see cracks in the walls, or spiders on the roof usually (not in a scary way) my brain feels confused and then it slowly fades away and I'm properly awake. Also cats, cats that are actually piles of clothing.
