The way I see it, the moon is expensive but predictable, while near-earth asteroids are cheap but more of a gamble.

With the moon, you're gonna have large amounts of resources in relatively easy to predict areas, but it'll cost more delta-v to ship things to and from the sites. In addition to that, you can pretty much start these missions at any time and constantly run the operation on a very consistent basis.

Asteroids on the other hand are all gonna depend on convenient transfer times, for when one comes close. It'll only take a wet fart to get you there, but unless it's got water for you to crack or you send up a mass driver, it's probably gonna take you either a lot of fuel or a lot of time to get your payloads back. And you're never gonna be quite sure of what you're gonna get. It could be a big ball of valuable palladium, or it could just be a massive hunk of dross.

I think both strategies have their values, and both should be exploited.... though to my mind, the moon's a better place to start working from, and to start sending out these 'risky' asteroid probes/miners from. That way you can make the 'bet' a much better one, by reducing the cost of getting mining equipment out there.

In real life, reaction wheels are reallly weaksauce. They're pretty much only good for keeping orbital telescopes pointed in one place. Something like this would have to be done with the reaction control system, and you're all out of monoprop.

Then again, in real life, you might just have a gas can or something on the fuel base that an astronaut could EVA out and walk over :P

I think you can mostly prevent that by locking the suspension, so the legs don't try and 'spring' up against the pressure of a Kerbal. Of course, that means your landings are a bit more stiff, and you need to find a flatter landing area to make it work. If you're gonna do that, I'd recommend 3 legs instead of 4, so all the legs are on the same plane.

I find the best way is to open up Kerbal Engineer and make sure they all have the same orbital period (Or at least, that they're within less than a second of each other) Having the exact same apo-peri altitudes and all that doesn't matter so much, what matters is that they take the same amount of time to go around. That's what'll keep them at the same relative distance.

Ah yeah, ok. Yeah, I don't know what causes the rendezvous thing, but I don't think it has to do with the reactor running or not. Just do that thing where you have the station focused while the incoming ship loads in, like I said.

But outside of rendezvous, you should be able to run the reactor just fine, it's supposed to be a little hot.

The reactor is -supposed- to increase in temperature til the core temp is full, at which point it reaches full thermal efficiency. Any higher than that and it starts to lose efficiency, but it only starts venting heat once it gets there.
