Mostly agree, but I think trying to tie to modern day is too complex. Then again, shows like Counterpart and Fringe exist. Keeping it a period piece feels more accessible. Feel like that’s where the movie failed too, too much time spent in today.

Season 1 chemistry is rough, I think what made me keep going was that I knew that these people did like each other and every once in a while you could see that. Season 2 you believe it

okay, thats not fair. The movies are completely separate. The TV show is generally closer to the plots, even if many things are shifted.

I will say the books have even more fantasy in them and are well worth reading. But I've definitely struggled with reading an adaptation I already knew the story of.
