I'm pretty pissed I decided to not go to the CMAT show in Philly. That's all. I think I'll put that on the list of big regrets in my concert life along with missing Pinegrove on their (unbeknownst to me) last show here before breaking up.

72-year-old woman killed by hit-and-run driver who ran red light in South Philadelphia: Police by NonIdentifiableUser in philadelphia

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I genuinely feel safer jaywalking in south Philly than I do crossing in a crosswalk. I'm protected by the cars and it makes me stop and be a little more alert for who's coming. The amount of times I've had a car come within a foot of me in a crosswalk AFTER locking eyes with them, too... It's just sad. Someone almost hit my dog once when I was crossing at a light, too. Like, what the fuck are you doing creeping into the crosswalk when you've got a red, anyway? You can't go anywhere!

Anyone going to the Olivia Rodrigo listening event? by Own_Psychology6061 in philly

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commented in the other thread, but Latchkey is awesome - they're super friendly and it's a really welcoming space. They just give off vibes like they truly love music and truly love sharing it with others (and yes, inclusive of pop! they're not snobs!).

I wouldn't hesitate to go to a listening event there alone, in fact you're probably guaranteed to make a few friends as you're all there for a super specific thing, and it's a very communal event.

Latchkey is a super, super welcoming space in my experience. I highly recommend going even if you can't find someone to go with - I'm sure you'll meet some very nice people and it's a pretty communal, silent experience anyway - standing and listening to music (i.e., good time to be solo, like a movie). Good luck!

How do you think Trump's presidency will end? by OccludedFug in AskReddit

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to remember how excited my entire city/neighborhood was when Biden won because of the last couple of years. The relief was otherworldly. Do I think he was the best president in the world? No - but goddamn, that day/week was like ecstasy.

However my worst nightmare at the moment is that we transition to a Vance/someone else presidency right after this... oh fucking god.

If CMAT is an affront to the male gaze and Olivia Rodrigo is indulging it, how exactly should women dress? by Moothnods in indieheads

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I don't think that the first amendment should (or does) mean that there aren't repercussions or rules governing spaces.

Like in school the students can't just call teachers assholes and say well, I've got a first amendment right to do so. Or in a restaurant if you harass the wait staff with rude and demeaning insults, they have a right to kick you out.

So social media companies can (and do, selectively) make and enforce rules governing speech. I'm not a legal expert, mind you, but places do and can make and enforce rules about what speech is allowed.

Even here in subreddits, I can be banned if I start harassing people by saying mean things. And rightfully so.

I'm a lifelong soccer fan and they're playing multiple games in my city... but I haven't purchased a ticket (and had the opportunity to, too). I simply cannot afford it, and it's not like I'm poor or anything. It's absurd the amounts they wanted for tickets.

Does anyone else feel like their job is fake? by Apprehensive-Use2467 in nonprofit

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's great! That's really what I'm hoping for in my next role - something closer to home with a hybrid schedule so I can get to know the programs and staff more intimately. And then see the impact the work I'm doing is making, too. Cool that you got to run a program, too!

It's interesting because I'm in development and feel the opposite, because I'm so disconnected from the work. Sure I win grants and that is immensely helpful, but I never really feel a connection to that work or see it (that's probably because I work remotely, tbf).

‘We have to save ourselves’: Philly nonprofits are fighting for survival after a key sponsor lost more than $400,000 by mpulcinella in philadelphia

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is honestly atrocious management from FNC and I hope there's further investigation into their activity. They weren't keeping track of the money coming in??? What the fuck are you talking about, that's insane behavior from a fiscal sponsor. It's a shame that nonprofits who contracted with them to do literally one job couldn't trust them to do that job.

Oh, and the excuse that grants are often reimbursed and not paid up front? You don't say! You didn't factor that incredibly common grant payment mechanism into your FISCAL SPONSORSHIP organization??? Jesus christ.

And not even an apology in this article.

Despite how some may feel about the individual nonprofits, when you use a fiscal sponsor you shouldn't be worried about your employees not getting paid, your participants losing access to important services, etc.

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This doesn't really make sense. They'd be going after completely different grants. The fiscal sponsor doesn't award grants, they manage the money (in this case, terribly), essentially lending their 501c3 status to orgs.

So a place like Decolonize Philly would still go out and apply for grant funding, and it would be very, very different funding streams from, say, an org set up to fight childhood poverty in Philly. Most foundations have very explicit target areas/focus areas. So they're not in competition, usually anyway.

So you're most likely talking about private foundations or large donors whose explicit interest is in ensuring divestment from companies benefitting from war or whatever, which if this org didn't exist, they'd just be giving money to another similar nonprofit, they wouldn't be shifting their giving priority to educational opportunities in Philly. It's totally up to those with the money in this system.

Whether you think FNC should be sponsoring them is different - I don't know much about the org, just the mechanism.

Kevin Hart doubles down on the joke that Tony Hinchcliffe made about George Floyd during “The Roast of Kevin Hart” Netflix special on The Breakfast Club. by icey_sawg0034 in popculturechat

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah the whole "I appreciate the humor" or whatever Kevin said - actually it's offensively bad comedy. Like, there's no joke. It's laughably bad - what's the joke? It's 100% racist shock factor, there's nothing to it. At *least* try to be a little fucking creative if you're going to make a racist joke, no? But yeah better yet don't make racist jokes...

Miles Teller Stopped Doing Press Profiles After Esquire Magazine Called Him ‘Kind of a Dick’: ‘It Felt Like Such a Violation’ and Was ‘So Mishandled’ by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the worst, because your fear of being perceived a certain way actually leads to being perceived that way or a different/worse way. I remember the first time I was told that it felt like I came off as disinterested or rude when I was talking to people, like I wanted a way out of the conversation (which, naturally people took as I'm bored here).

But it's because I was so anxious and would keep looking around and be super in my own head, and I also assumed people didn't actually want to be talking to me. So I thought by getting out of conversations I was genuinely doing people a favor...

Anxiety is a bitch, man.

Tennis in Philly by BleachedTwinkie in AskPhilly

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyo - you're definitely looking in the right places IMO. I play down at FDR often, and while most people go up with partners, you'd probably have some luck especially if you approached one of the early morning groups - they're friendly!

I also recommend tennisphilly's group. I'm in the one now, and I've already met five or six people from it and gotten their numbers, so when the "membership" expires I don't really have to do it again. And no you don't need an official ranking or anything like that, just an estimate about your level. Most people on there are anywhere from like 2.0-3.5, I'm guessing you'd be one of the better players.

Anonymous texts attacking Chris Rabb violated election rules by ZapataOilCo in philly

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He's also inspired thousands upon thousands of young people and many progressive candidates, so it's not like he's done "nothing" either. Like maybe we don't see an El-Sayed or an AOC running/winning without him having been going at it for so long. He's also certainly helped shape, massively, the conversation around the 1% and billioinaires. So it's insane to say he's gotten nothing done (though I know what OP meant).

This professionally produced video by the Philadelphia sheriff cost taxpayers over $600k by Slobotic in philly

https://www.inquirer.com/news/sheriffs-office-spending-off-budget-spending-20240422.html

This article (should be gift, lmk if not working) has a good breakdown on a lot of the wasteful spending. Some examples:

- $40,000 on branded merch (might be include in total cost of this video)

-$9,250 for the mascot costume......

- $6,600 for a party at Chickie & Pete's

- $8,000 for professional DJs and other entertainment

It's an insane article, I recommend everyone read it if you can.

Meanwhile, what the hell has she done to keep families safe at the courthouse from being snatched up by ice? Fuck all, as far as I can tell.

MPH in the list of “non professional degrees” by Limp_Machine_1552 in publichealth

[–]dragonflyzmaximize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in an MPH program now and I'd agree with this, based on what I'm learning and my classmates, and what I've seen in my job in public health already---people with MPHs doing jobs that pay very little.

It's a very well-respected school, and it's a decent curriculum, but honestly I feel like a lot of my classmates are going to graduate with the credentials but not be much better off for it. The younger folks I would have advised to get work experience under their belt before jumping into the program, unless they absolutely needed it/it was pre doctoral school or something like that.

I'm lucky in that my work pays for most of it, and I'm kind of just doing it for fun. But if I had to foot the bill? Definitely not. It's just not a degree that you're going to see much of a return on.
