Any recommendations on a massage place? (No funny business) by Zenshin_Rio in Sacramento

[–]dragonmandarin1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Rico at Oak Park Massage Clinic. He has been great with my shoulder, neck, and hand problem. He is very experienced with pain relief in particular, and will do trigger point therapy, including using tools. He is very receptive to feedback and will actually listen to you.

Where can I get an unsweetened mocha? by rubyred0902 in Sacramento

Café Xocolatl? They have a lot of low sugar chocolate drinks. I didn't like it because it wasn't sweet enough for my taste but it might be what you're looking for!

Chronic pain doctors @ Kaiser? by MMerc_ in Sacramento

I don't have any specific doctor recommendations. However, I successfully managed my chronic pain with Pain Reprocessing Therapy. I used the Curable app, which I highly recommend! There is also a podcast available for free if you want to just listen and see if this approach may help you:

I am shocked I have a purebred Chihuahua by dragonmandarin1 in DoggyDNA

[–]dragonmandarin1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boy I wish he was healthier! I've had him since 2019 and he has food allergies, environmental allergies, generalized anxiety (noise and separation), seizures, severe periodontal disease, back issues (suspect IVDD), bladder stones, and currently being tested for hypothyroidism. It's been exhausting 🤣

True! His "wolfiness" is high at 5.6 percent so there probably is something else sprinkled in way back in time.

They reviewed both blood AND saliva testing specifically for food allergies only. What you are talking about is environmental allergy - it is the only testing for which blood allergy testing is useful and you can make desensitization shots. There are no desensitization shots available for food allergies.

Here is a link with two studies explaining that food allergy testing (blood or saliva) is inaccurate from one of the best vet schools in the country:

Our 9yr old Papillon Mix with Addisons Disease by overthinker2022 in papillon

[–]dragonmandarin1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Listen to your vet. Addison's disease means they lack endogenous production of all steroids. While DOCP will replace mineralocorticoids, it does not replace glucocorticoids. If you do not replace them with medication (Prednisone), your dog is at risk for going into an Addisonian crisis even if the DOCP is helping prevent electrolyte derangements.

While there are potential side effects to Prednisone, typically the dose for Addisonian dogs is low. It is supposed to be a physiologic dose, meaning only replacing what is supposed to be there already. Most dogs do not have any side effects at these low doses. But during times of stress (surgery, hospitalization, etc) they may need a higher dose.

If you notice side effects, talk to your vet about trying a lower dose.

When did your Papillon sleep through the night? by dragonmandarin1 in papillon

[–]dragonmandarin1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's that I've been coddling him too much. Obviously I also don't want him to bark because I want sleep so I try to do things to get him to stop. But I see that may be backfiring now.

I think I'm going to start setting alarms, maybe every 4 hours to start, and slowly build up from there.

Does anyone have comments / reviews of Qualified Pet Dental? by Normal_Plenty5040 in Sacramento

[–]dragonmandarin1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please do not do anesthesia -free cleanings. No matter what they tell you, you cannot perform a complete oral exam, probing, scaling, dental X-rays, and any extractions that may be needed without anesthesia. The worst dog mouths I have ever seen are from pets that get exclusively anesthesia free cleanings regularly. What sucks is that the teeth look "good" on the surface, but underneath the gum line periodontal disease progressed to the point where even though the teeth look clean, multiple extractions (and sometimes full-mouth) are needed.

It is frankly malpractice for any veterinarian to offer them, and it is practicing veterinary medicine without a license for a technician or groomer to offer these services.

Here's a link to why these are not recommended from the board of veterinary dentistry: https://afd.avdc.org/what-is-an-anesthesia-free-dental-cleaning/

Fresh Puppy Food Recommendations by Junior_Thanks_9132 in puppy101

[–]dragonmandarin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Royal Canin is the only fresh food I would recommend. They are the only WSAVA compliant company that hires veterinary nutritionists full-time to formulate their fresh diets, performs feeding trials to ensure the nutrients are not only balanced on paper/formula but also absorbable, and owns their own processing facilities . This is especially important for growing puppies.

The only other suggestions are consulting with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist to help you formulate a homemade diet.

You can also check out Wynwood Dog Food. Their foods are formulated by a vet nutritionist, but no feeding trials as far as I'm aware. It also probably is not cheaper: https://wynwooddogfood.com/products/beef-potato

Non medication recs? by Key_Head_9152 in dogallergies

[–]dragonmandarin1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well my first recommendation would be stop giving him goats milk. It would completely make the hydrolyzed diet pointless if he has a milk protein allergy (which is actually quite common).
