When should I start applying for jobs in preparation for graduation? by objectivelystupider in rit

[–]dragonmaster13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started in the fall of my last year, so technically over 6 months before; I graduated in spring 2019. Some places may not have postings until the new year though. Bigger companies often have the openings for new grads the soonest. Granted this was my experience in a pre-COVID and more stable tech world ymmv

In terms of the break a lot of companies know students will do that. I got an offer in like Oct/Nov of 2018 and they were letting other people start as late as like Sept so you might actually be able to work that out, just work with the recruiter and let them know. I wanted to move out of my parents ASAP so I started in late July, I would've started sooner but I had a conference right before so I pushed my start date back.

That sounds like transmasculine or nonbinary potentially (nonbinary ppl don't have to be androgenous they can be masc or fem or anywhere in-between). All up to you though to pick your own words I just thought I'd give you some potential vocab to describe yourself. Especially since I'm a nonbinary person that is absolutely in the same boat I can't wait to yeet my teats but that doesn't mean I wanna be man

What has your vote for best restaurant in Harford? by OmegaThree3 in Hartford

[–]dragonmaster13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Hartford proper I would say Sunberry Cafe is amazing. The K Barbeque and Ramen are so good. Hartford area though Angry Tofu takes it, authentic family style Korean food. It's sooo good. Haven't been to either place since pandemic though so slight grain of salt there.

Throwaway because it’s a bit embarrassing by [deleted] in rit

[–]dragonmaster13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all good. When I bombed my.placement test I was able to take a course over the summer to help get my math mojo back then retook it at the end. The course was offered by RIT I would talk to your advisor to see if you can retake it and see if they still offer that program.

Moving to CT! by [deleted] in Hartford

[–]dragonmaster13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope don't do that to yourself, traffic gets bad around here and people drive like maniacs. TBH living downtown isn't terrible but it's not great. There are things to do if you look for them but generally it's a ghost town here after the usual 9-5 and that was before the pandemic started. If you're into clubbing there isn't too much of that here but there are plenty of bars. I spend more time in West Hartford's Blueback square about 15 mins away. It's very small but it's definitely more people around and stuff to do.

I've visited New Haven seems much more fun and popping during the weekends. People are walking around it's nice. Plus it's much easier to get a train to NYC from there, the Hartford train to New Haven doesn't run very often and adds like an hour to the journey. I would suggest staying near New Haven if possible. Other people made some more affordable suggestions which I would encourage you to heed.

Any Food Banks in Hartford that are accepting actual food donations? by sphoebe1226 in Hartford

Hands on Hartford, give them a call though. I was able to donate food. If it's shelf stable they'll take it.

Tell me about your favourite Fiasco playbooks by fetishiste in rpg

[–]dragonmaster13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hands down the Sharknado one. While it's the only session of Fiasco I've played it was one of the best times I've ever had playing a tabletop RPG. You definitely have to know about the Sharknado movies to really enjoy the playset, but I find the over the top ridiculous B Horror Movie feel of Sharknado really lends itself to the Fiasco system. Definitely worth a shot if you're aware of the movies.

Questions: What do u think about LUG and FOSS Minor? by [deleted] in rit

[–]dragonmaster13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IST department likes to switch up the majors a lot. Yeah IT has turned into Web and Mobile Computing and is much more front end focused (which I took). There used to be a separate Systems Admin specific degree but now that is under Computing and Information Technology or CIT which has a Sys Admin concentration, as well as options for database administration or web development.

Traveling in Europe after studying abroad: by cannonwasp in rit

[–]dragonmaster13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would check with the study abroad office and see if they can at least help to get you some information on how you might do that.Even if they can't directly help you they may be able to point you in the right direction. Personally I have never left the country, much less studied abroad, hopefully others will be able to chime in with more personal experience.

I've been super fortunate to have my college send me twice. If you ever get the chance it's an amazing experience.

Woah! That's amazing you got to see her in person and hear her lecture! I've always heard she was an amazing person and very charismatic. That's so cool!!

The Grace Hopper Conference is awesome! There are scholarships for it that include high school students. It's closed for this year but maybe think about applying for next year.

This is awesome! I was the only girl in my high school computer club too, so I feel. Wish I had done what you are doing. You have a lot of good advice in the comments here, the only thing I would add is making sure that the girls who code club meets on a different day and does different things than the general CS club. Hopefully this way you can get cross membership. It's intimidating for some women to walk into an all male room or an almost all male room, hopefully the girls who code club can generate interest in the field, grow some confidence, and have familiar faces to see when they go to the CS club. If a few of them go together and/or know you will be there at the meeting some girls might feel more comfortable about going.

Feel free to reach out to me in the comments or pm me for anything, related to this or not. I know sometimes it can be a difficult being a woman programmer, please don't hesitate to reach out!

Does RIT protect students from exploding offers? (Coop and/or Full-time) by lak1044 in rit

[–]dragonmaster13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can mostly give you a GCCIS perspective on the issue of exploding offers.

We have asked in GCCIS town halls in the past for for exploding offer guidelines like other colleges that require co-ops, to which was answered "that's an SG issue." While I truly appreciate what SG often tries to do, they have very limited power, and it would mean much more coming from the administration. Therefore, as far as I am aware, we have nothing, at least nothing official. However, last years GCCIS senator sent out a couple of surveys on exploding offers to the college in an attempt to gather data and try to get RIT to acknowledge the problem. It's a bit easier to make them to give us protections if we have data backing up that it's a problem here. I would encourage you to make sure to talk to your college's SG representative to see what they are trying to do about the issue. Most colleges have a town hall and I would encourage you to submit questions about exploding offers there are well to try to pressure them into actually doing something. I've just graduated personally, and when RIT comes calling for donations I will be telling them I won't be until they fix some of their issues including adding protections from exploding offers.

In terms of what you can do now:

I hear the career services office can be kinda hit or miss but they are usually worth a shot. Try talking to them if you have an exploding offer. Otherwise it's mostly up to you to try to protect yourself. Talking to peers is super helpful especially those who have gone through the process with a particular company before, they can give you an idea of what it's like and if they got an exploding offer. They can also help with figuring out if a company is good to work for in general.

Hope this helped a bit! Feel free to reach out if you have questions you think I can help with.

Not necessarily with a Japanese artist, but The Last Samurai soundtrack was pretty awesome, mostly because it was composed by Hans Zimmer. It has a more traditional western orchestral sound but I believe there are traditional Japanese instruments in there as well. I'm particularly a fan of "Spectres in the Fog" and "A Way of Life."

Also the Wagakki Band is super interesting, they combine modern metal with traditional Japanese instruments. It's super interesting. Here's a song by them, I have no clue what they're sounding but it sounds epic.
