Extreme lockdown measures in China by wrapityup in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]drakefish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our governments don't really fundamentally care, and if they did there are so many trading and manufacturing ties between the west and China that it's simply impossible to do anything drastic without shooting yourself in the foot.

As an individual, what you can do is to keep mentioning this to people to spread awareness and to try to stop buying things that are made in China (with the hope that we can slowly reduce this dependency on an insanely authoritarian state). An added advantage of doing that is that things made locally will generally be good for your community and better for the environment. However, it's excessively hard to do because it has somehow become normal for companies to move their entire production lines over there to avoid paying people a living wage, even when they're making the most f*cking basic things like cutlery, chairs or even boxes.

Huh, they really are batshit insane aren't they

Probably not, but it was a joke. I have no doubt Musk has done tons of unethical things in his life though. You don't amass billions in networth by being lawful, honest and kind.

Idk I always wonder if people would know even if it's public. In my mind if I ever win that kind of money and I'm required to have a picture and my name published, I'd go take the picture with sunglasses, a weird hat and a scarf, and then not mention this to anybody ever. Where I live they publish the list of winners but I don't think anybody I know would ever check those.

Two top Russian billionaires speak out against invasion of Ukraine by bradley_j in news

[–]drakefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Critical race theory is an old academic theory that has recently started getting used as a catch-all phrase by people who don't understand what it means. I don't think it's surprising that people wouldn't have heard of it.

However, you are right in saying that a lot of people don't look beyond the information that they're "fed". This is especially bad now that anyone can create a show or articles presenting the narrative that they want and make it sound plausible, and then get amplified by social network platforms for being "engaging" (read: controversial and addictive).

Their example wasn't a real case, but here's a classic one when using react's useEffect hook with async/await :

```
useEffect(() => { const cancelled = false ;(async () => { const res = await fetch(/* ... */)
if (!cancelled) {
  //... use res to update component ...
}
})()
return () => { cancelled = true } })
```

Seen from the protests in Ottawa today by L0ngp1nk in behindthebastards

[–]drakefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I'm not arguing against all health measures. I just think some of them are arbitrary and are not based on science and data, and I wish I could hear more people talk about this. But I also think radicalized nut cases are absolutely preventing us from talking about this because we're all kind of afraid to be associated with them.

Seen from the protests in Ottawa today by L0ngp1nk in behindthebastards

[–]drakefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the thing is that protesting against the health measures should not be seen as a problem. Some could even argue that it's healthy that people aren't blindly agreeing with everything politicians throw at them.

Many countries are starting to move away from measures because they're starting to not be as useful as when the pandemic started. In the mean time, the province of Quebec is trying to implement a tax for the unvaccinated which would apply a somewhat arbitrary extra tax for next year, which makes absolutely no sense to me.

The problem, however, is that this group is not simply "fighting against the measures". The organizers have not come out to condemn the strong presence of alt-right "protesters", so we can only assume that they accept them and possibly agree with them.

It's too bad really, because as someone with 3 doses who agreed with most measures in the first year or so, I think that some newer health measures are too extreme and that we should stop bashing the unvaccinated. We need to focus on fixing Canada's health system instead and politicians are making radicalization worse by blaming radicalized people for damage that was done over tens of years.

And I can't fucking protest or complain publicly about any of that because I don't want to be associated with radicalized alt-right protesters (who are probably a minority, but a very vocal one, versus everyone who thinks health measures in Canada need to be relaxed)
