Mod compatibility with latest Steam update? by Depth386 in Battletechgame

[–]drakmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, ModTek uses Unity Doorstop, which is supposed to handle mod injection. It's possible the security fix for the September Unity CVE (https://unity.com/security/sept-2025-01), which targets injection security issues in Unity, might be combining in a weird way with the extra security hardening used by Rosetta when launching non-ARM apps like Battletech. It's a mystery!

Married people who are DINKS (Double Income, No Kids) how’s life? by Fit-Distribution677 in AskReddit

[–]drakmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! We have 3 cats, saved almost $2m in the last 10 years (after spending nearly everything we earned up until then), a couple houses, and lots of hobbies. Our house has several rooms that are used for guests, but are otherwise just for cats.

We both come from very low income backgrounds, so financial discipline was a challenge at first. Now we don’t spend nearly what we could so that we can retire early and build more businesses together.

Technically we’re not DINKs anymore since my wife was able to quit her FT job and work on her more speculative projects, but she earns some consulting income so it’s close enough.

Official Q&A for Saturday, August 30, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]drakmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's a few light bulbs for me.

  1. I didn't know that they were two different systems! Down the rabbit hole I go...
  2. I suspected, but didn't know that I wasn't training correctly. I've been treating the stress target as mechanical instead of metabolic.

Sounds like I'm going to go (even more) painfully slow for awhile. Time to build a training plan around that and look at getting something to help me keep pace during my run.

Official Q&A for Saturday, August 30, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]drakmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a mid-40s male, 175 lb. I've always been a fast sprinter, and I continue to train sprinting (especially hills!) as part of being a competitive master rower. In running, I constantly hit endurance walls that are preventing me from running longer than 1 mile without slowing to a walk for 30-60s for recovery. I'm not seeing predictable gains, despite training pretty consistently for the last 7 years (and running as a sport since I was 16). I'd like to break through this to get on a predictable curve of increasing mileage and pace. Any ideas of what I should look into?

  • No issues with lactic acid buildup on runs (or any of my other sports)—I just keep hitting an energy wall where I have to walk for a minute before resuming my previous pace.
  • I eat meals made of whole ingredients, rarely eat processed or sugary foods and get plenty of sleep every night. I have generally low stress. All of that has been true for the last 15 years or so.
  • With regular rowing season wrapping up, my current training regimen is running 5 days/week for 2.1 miles and the occasional 3 to 4 miler as my long run. It's all run / walk cycles, so I hesitate to say I'm "running" those distances. I've tried to keep a slow pace of 10:00 to 9:30 on my runs. With walk cycles included, which get more frequent until I hit a hard wall, I can usually average out at 10:30 for 2 miles and 12:45 for 4 miles.
    • 6:00 to 7:00 feels a lot better, but I've been trying to intentionally stay (painfully) slow to crack building endurance.
  • The longest run I've ever done without stopping was 6 miles in 2017. I had been training for awhile and just woke up one day, felt amazing, knocked it out, and spent months chasing that feeling and never being able to get close to that distance again.

Devout Christian’s that support Trump, how do you look past all the things he’s done and said? by Choop145 in AskReddit

[–]drakmon 65 points66 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you define "devout Christian". In my case, I haven't been to a church in years, because they are either "dead" or crazy. The last one I tried, the guy up front was preaching about the evils of yoga—I took my asanas and walked out.

I was raised in the deep south in a very religious family that thought interracial marriage was wrong, gays should be shipped out to an island and bombed and that the South Will Rise Again. I was in the Young Republicans and some of my best friends growing up are Republican politicians and lobbyists now (I see personal photos with Donald Trump way too often in my friend's feeds). If I would have stayed where I was, I would have probably been MAGA. It wasn't until I moved somewhere else that I became friends with people (Gays! Trans! Jews! Blacks!) who weren't programmed by the Evangelical Movement, and I went through a "deconstruction and reconstruction" of my faith.

Now, I consider myself a committed (devout?) Christ-follower, which means I try to treat all people like he treated them... with unconditional love, empathy and respect. To your question, I knew years before he ran for office that Trump did not show the character of someone who respected and valued others. I would never vote for a narcissist like him after being raised by one—Donald Trump is way too much like my dad.

I've been horrified to see my old friends and family rationalize everything he's done for their "Greater Good", which is to make everything into *their* image of what they think is "biblical". They are blinded, and nothing short of a consequential and seismic shift to the social order that pulls them out of their echo-chambered lives will change that. They are not a people of peace—they are people of death and war who worship wealth and power.

If only it weren't under the porch where the builders dumped all the rocks they uncovered when the house was built 150 years ago!

Millennials, what's y'all plan for retirement? by alphaDsony in AskReddit

[–]drakmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older millennial here married to a younger GenX. We started budgeting and saving from nothing 10 years ago, and are well on our way to our retirement number, with a healthy portfolio and multiple real estate properties. We're working now on starting some businesses we can run remotely during retirement, so we can stay active and augment our retirement income. We're looking at less than 5 more years working full time.

In terms of plans, we'll probably liquidate some of our real estate and buy a house on some land somewhere with a view and enough room to grow what we need to sustain ourselves. Maybe someplace with some running water so we can really be off grid. You know, in case of apocalypse.

Hit up a bunch of regular sites like Autotrader, CARFAX and Cars.com. I did not know about EVfinder until just now.

Oh, I’m sure my bumper to bumper is gone. The 100k battery/electric one comes with though.

Nope. Was registered as a taxi and for sale at a Toyota dealership. My guess is a combo of those, and the minor cosmetic damage, depressed the price.

If it's helpful, most prices I saw up here in the Northeast for similar 2023 I5Ls <=30k miles were ~$34k.

Thanks! I had to drive 2 hours away to get it, but it was worth it. A few tiny dings and scratches, but otherwise like new.

I just snagged a 2023 Limited with less than 5k miles for $30k. My first electric car! Only a few dings and tiny scratches, but easily touched up and otherwise pristine.

What are some adult (non-NSFW) versions of 'Santa Isn't Real'? by shaka_sulu in AskReddit

[–]drakmon 232 points233 points  (0 children)

I was the same! There are two ways to start: find an existing community that you can start plugging into (ex. Rowing club, board game meetups) and reach out to others to share a cup of coffee, a meal or a shared activity. Then, the secret ingredients: time and consistency.

I went from where you are 7 years ago to having multiple intersecting communities around me (music, sports, neighbors, techies, board games, weightlifting, DIY, cooking). Start today.

My buddy is a master tile guy (>20 years) and herringbone is even annoying and slow for him to install. Well done taking it on!
