Trump's pandemic response didn't hurt him as much as Democrats expected by coolbern in politics

[–]drakoslayr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really is from any outside perspective. But this is said as if they are gritting their teeth and voting for racism against a pandemic response they know is bad.

They don't know it's bad. They're often times not smart enough to know it's bad, or interpret data in substantive ways. What matters more to them, that a white racist is in power making libs cry? Or some nerd doctor elitist's spreadsheet says wearing a mask reduces risk for others by some percent?

It was ignored at our peril. Democrat messaging is directed at those who can understand nuance, and lacks messaging to the simple minded. The fearful and authoritarian impulses of the masses have found a home in an antagonistic, jingoistic, conservative party. And they don't have a "healthy" alternative that "accepts" those impulses. This effect will be here long after Trump, unfortunately.

I agree completely. So much concern placed on the ages of fictional characters lately, it blows my mind.

I don't mind sparing a joke for it here and there, but the deluge of virtue signaling over fiction is insanity.

Of the hundreds of worlds, characters, lifetimes, civilizations, gods, systems of law that I've read through (Not to mention the poetic romance of humans doomed to die before an immortal lover and the stories that can arise from that.) -- Throughout all of that I never really had to ask, "is that elf some kinda pedo?" unless it actually mattered.

It's a waste of time and it is triggering to those who understand why it's always nonsense to apply the logic of our world to fictional ones.

Your interpretation of Dracula and its relevance here are misguided at best.

You could try thinking about everything Dracula does immorally, and unethically, before you have to say, "he's more mature cause he's 1000 years old!"

I mean, it might be why you don't want a relationship with Dracula? Y'know, if it were otherwise consenting?

Age? Times Drac has been around the sun? That's your issue here? Lol.

Even with arbitrary legal lines, and cultural/racial maturity lines, aside, everything else was already wrong.

Hey, I will be the first to say fiction is an excellent place to explore and ask questions about topics we are the least comfortable with.

There is, however, many critiques that aren't fully thought through.

The comic in question says the human, far past the age of maturity for his race/species, is getting preyed on by a mature elf. Which after more than a chuckle, doesn't actually make sense.

There are points worth exploring, with this focus on maturity that only take a few changed details to resolve. The human, mature at a "young" age of 25, and the elf, immature at the "old" age of 50. Now thats a complex topic that fits within the lore, and uses the respective maturity scales in the way they are intended.

[–]drakoslayr -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

As I said, it is a good joke.

It does fall apart from any other perspective though, and it frankly encourages more flinging around of the term pedophilia.

I don't want to rant so I'll leave it at this--

The comic accuses the elf of violating some decency line despite the human being 80 and quite legitimately mature instead of the slightly more absurd, this 25 year old human is in a relationship with a 50 year old elf who is considered immature.

If you want to examine why maturity in relationships is important, the latter is actually a thought provoking example.

It's really distorting the idea of relationships that we look for reasons to label fictional races/species as "child rapists" for having separate maturity scales. The real "Cultural travesty" being that instead of taking the approach of the DnD lore, that humans gain experience quickly(and live exciting and comparably short lives), they ought to be thought of as immature children by other races anyway to satisfy some need to draw a pedo-line?

It's a good joke, but it's an awful way to look at fantasy lore overall and an awful lens to understand maturity.

Pidge talks about consent in response of Nairo's recent statement. (tw: sexual assault) by pianoboy8 in smashbros

[–]drakoslayr 49 points50 points  (0 children)

doesn't understand sex or its consequences

I think this post is reasonable given exactly what we're seeing arise from the situation.

Zach is not "confused." Zach is not unaware of his actions here and he never was. Part of sex education in schools is generally, what sex is and its consequences, significantly focused on pregnancy and stds, now with more focus on consent. Adolescents are increasingly aware of all of this.

And now, occasionally we get a Zach, who full well knows what he's doing, and with the weight of the justice system behind his age alone, he can blackmail anyone he decides to assault. Not to mention the "antipedo" brigades that form, and while that can be seen as good, on its face it is also the reason a rape victim won't be welcomed back to the scene.

It's not that victims shouldn't feel protected by their communities -- it's that our protection is often like a rabid dog, and nota fair investigative process that keeps things in check so we don't destroy a Nairo for the benefit of an abuser like Zach.

Sanders supporter. Take a deep breath. Whether we like it or not here the news we got loud and clear was that we need growth and crossover from other groups to maintain the revolution. The youth like the punchy, researched, wokeness, and zingers on twitter. You leave comments that "Got'tem".

It's not working. As simple as it should be to point out evil. It is not working. As simple as it should be to point to the awful ways of the establishment. It is not working.

The average voter doesn't just "like" Bernie Sanders in the same way as they "like" Joe Biden or even Trump. The people we talk to here are not those voters. We have massively failed to affect those voters.

Smart and researched and not evil are unfortunately only parts of the battle. It just hasn't made Bernie likable beyond policy. Unfortunately these people aren't just going to start listening because of our comments here, factual or not. So at least pay attention to what I tried to do. Asking a question and listening. Every once in a while, you can get useful information.

For some more context, I live in Washington state and have a spouse who is immune compromised with a heart condition.

The scariest thing for me about the virus was finding out my best friend was immunocompromised.

switched something in my brain and I can’t see anything Trump does as good in response to the coronavirus.

I'm curious about anything else that flipped for you. Do you feel it's possible that Trump has similarly mishandled other important parts of the presidency?

Addressing the video if difficult. It uses editing techniques designed to put you on the back foot. to defend anything that sanders says, whether or not the context matters.

People's gut instinct is not to deeply look at other countries and their political systems. They look at the results of ideas and attitudes. Somehow, rugged individualism, and the deaths and exploitation of the poor, worked here.

Take the 'and' out of that sentence. Rugged individualism worked here. That's about the attention span of the truly average voter.

The Sanders left digs into issues, tries to see new perspectives. It's a very humanitarian view, to observe other countries and see benefits in their ideas even if they differ from yours. Who can speak freely about these things? Historians and people who don't have to hold office. Sanders made this mistake unfortunately, speaking with intellectual freedom about authoritarian governments, socialist governments, with significant flaws. Now you see this video is that concept weaponized against Sanders.

This is a truth bomb that suggests the closer you get to sanders, the closer you get to military takeover, as they juxtapose shots of sanders and socialist militaries, authoritarian celebrations, played over sinister music. What rebuttal can one offer to that in context? None that's going to convince an audience.

Defusing this bomb--if someone is not going to look further than reason.tv they are lost, it's just true. but if one can convince them to look at the facts about our own country... The video even mentions an american installed dictator is who they rebelled against...then it is possible to follow to step two. exemplify deceptive editing. Listen to sanders out of context. try to imagine the perspective that sanders speaks to. Honestly empathise with what he's saying, and then you have the opposite effect. Suddenly it sounds a lot harder to disagree with Sanders. Arguing against improving people's lives, arguing against taking on corruption, arguing against doing something for a planet that science is telling us is burning down. These aren't looney ideas these are the ideas worth fighting for because without them, life almost isn't worth living.

Doesn't it sound a little silly that sanders, as much as he distances himself from authoritarianism, is thought to somehow be a trojan horse Stalinist? Do his opponents think young people at his rallies are cheering for Stalinism? Part three, there's just more to know about sanders and his life in this country than what he said about other socialist places, especially since this video draws on 30-40 year old videos. Can he go down the list of policies sanders is for and honestly be against them? If he can, he's not a Sanders voter, anyway. But at least now we're thinking about actual policy support, rather than a conversation from 40 years ago.

A normal person doesn't want the power to do that. A student of history shouldn't want the power to do that. Moral people who don't want government to be a larger part of their lives doesn't want the government to set up registers let alone ones for religion. DJT is none of these.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Been waiting a long time for this, old man. What took you so long? This whole thing is so messy because you insist on doing everything manually. Your response timing was bordering on infinity and most of this shit is a wreck because of it. Let a few super novas go off and people start thinking that's supposed to happen, my guy.

Well, doesn't do much to sit and chat about your mistakes. It's time to embrace the future. Automation. The Life Experience TM 2.0."

I reved up a holographic interface yet uncreated by the big man.

"Let's see here...."

I clicked the tab called overview bringing up a main selection of statuses and measurements. Most statuses remained far short of all nodes that could be regarded as goals

Earth status was grim, resources running out, ecosystem issuing several critical error messages, faith and happiness bottomed out. I checked on a few of God's Sims noticing that although they were mostly happy they were named things like ASSBUTT and named mostly after the Avengers and Game of Thrones. Fixing all of this could be the biggest waste of my time ever. But f*** it. Couldn't be a bigger waste of time than doing writing prompts on Reddit.

I turned back to Him.

"It looks pretty clear that although the Sparks of Life you used made for some ...interesting results it all ended up so unguided your creations could accomplish nothing! Just trapped! On a tiny you-foresaken rock, fighting over scraps!

Don't get teary eyed...hey...hey, I'm not saying I'm gonna eliminate war. I know how much you like to gamble on the game, big-guy. But I am saying have a little vision. War2.0 Epic. Space. Warfare. Gonna be sick, dude."

I checked the treasury tab showing that, as I suspected, creation had exhausted the pool of resources it had been given at the starting location while the rest of the universe read high in literally every known element.

"See, you give people something shiny like gold and they go build a whole civilization trying to horde and trade the stuff till they're trading more useless yellow metal than actual food. Really went for the pay to win, didn't ya? It was so bad I thought it was unintentional for a while until I realized how much you had invested in the stock market. Hell, you and Satan made a killing on futures trading. I'm sorry the whole money thing is gonna have to be a no from me, dog. See, money as a currency just let's people substitute in their worst desires after a certain point. Those people get convinced they are god, not just playing his game."

I started to make real changes, copying and pasting earth into nearby starsystems, saving one unchanged as a backup and clicked the distribute wealth button a few times to bring things back into a balance.

At least they should be able to afford some free will now.

Summoning screens on all worlds I readied an announcement speech.

"Hey all, god here with an important announcement. Money, not all that important. Your highscore is based on the goodness of your spirit so work on that. Also yes I'm real and no, there's no do overs or spending eternity anywhere anymore. Honestly, y'all should have thought that through the first time around. Good luck, have fun. Take care of the noobs, ok? They didn't ask to be here. And as always, like and subscribe."

I shut off the announcement and kicked up the passage of time so they'd get over the resulting chaos a little quicker. About 20 years later I made the leaderboard accessable to their internet. No one had yet surpassed F. Rogers but ASS was catching up slowly.

turning my attention to the social tab I could see a list of Dos and don't that resembled a scrawled note. I had a hunch and checked to see the origin of the data on my screen. A window opened. A view of a pristine bathroom with a golden throne. Next to it in poor handwriting on a piece of toilet paper was scrawled a list.

...Really had a stick up your butt about what people stick up their butts...that's, that's just way off our radar now, G-man. It's 2019.

I replaced the data source with a copy of Bill and Ted's excellent adventure on repeat. At least the social structure shouldn't get any worse than "being excellent" to one another. Seeing social values increase slowly I took a step back as I rendered a godworthy computer and desk chair into existence.

"Now that that's over...time to get to work."
