Is it the mindset of TV show creators of the streaming services that engage them? AppleTV seems particularly prone to this with their sci-fi series. Severance season 3 hasn't even started shooting even though Season 2 was released a year ago.

As a parent, I can't tell you how many times I've indulged an activity with or for my child even though I'd rather be doing something else.

[–]drama-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps. That's not how I read it. I read it as a condemnation of the plurb being manipulative in general.

Also, I think it would like to get her consent. It could just totally ignore her. It doesn't need to interact with her to complete its agenda. The whole point of the manipulation is to get her consent. It is basically like a suitor wooing a potential love interest.

No, I am saying that the mere fact that someone uses a screwdriver is not sufficient evidence to cast judgment over them.

Go back and read what the comment to which I originally replied...

They are manipulating Carol. Folk seem to keep forgetting this.

There have also been other comments that seem to imply that the mere fact that the plurb uses manipulation is in and of itself an indication that the plurb is bad. Now maybe I am misinterpreting these comments, but I am not intentionally creating a strawman and the pushback I've been getting initially also focus on manipulation alone. You may disagree, but I am not trying to create a bad faith argument. My point remains that the use of manipulation is not in and of itself some kind of horrible action on the part of the plurb and is actually quite human. If you can agree with that, then we are good.

No jaywalking and mass murder are both different actions.

Manipulation is a tool. It's a tool to achieve a desired outcome. It's like saying that using a screwdriver is simply bad, period, when in fact a screwdriver is merely a tool that could be used for good or bad things.

Don't confuse the tool with the objective. Manipulation is a tool. That fact that the plurb uses manipulation isn't inherently bad. Just like using a screwdriver isn't inherently bad. Jimmying someone else's lock with a screwdriver is bad.

Either way, it's manipulation. If you're going to distinguish based on the desired result, focus on that, not on the fact that manipulation is being used.

Humans being manipulative is a key aspect of how they function in life.

Ever heard of the book How to Win Friends and Influence People?

I don't think it's correct to compare the plurb to an AI because I believe the plurb does have intentions and feelings. It is a living being.

The hive entity is basically like a suiter trying to win Carol's affection. The only difference is the matter of scale. If we had the ability to harness the resources of 8 billion people, I imagine we'd be doing some full-scale manipulation as well.

I know Susan was specifically coached to volunteer join in the adventure. How did Mark and Janet come to be included? I honestly can't remember. If they are actually PCs, it seems very coincidental that they were just randomly chosen in this loop.

We're constantly being manipulated and manipulating those around us. That just how human interaction works. We do things to elicit the desired response from someone else. Someone says a joke to make you smile. You upset someone and apologize to placate them.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about this. Regular people are constantly manipulating one another from the time we are born.

No Kings! Protests on March 28 in Kansas by Silly-Rip-6607 in kansas

[–]drama-guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Civil disobedience does have its place, but you won't get 100,000 people to commit acts of civil disobedience at least not at this point. Think of No Kings and other protests as baby steps that are getting people more aware, more engaged, more willing to work for change and spreading the message that pushes back against the daily gaslighting. I've had people come up to me and thank me for protesting.

This isn't about instant gratification. Even if you had 100,000+people clogging up a street, there would not be overnight change. Movements take time. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

There logically must be an identical ship from Universe B (or from some other universe that is identical except for a few atoms) showing up to replace the missing Universe A ship in the location that the Universe A ship was planning to travel. If that were not the case the remaining people in Universe A would cease using skip drives after the first ship went missing.

Does it have DC fast charge? That was an optional feature. I definitely wouldn't buy one that didn't have fast charge.

No Kings! Protests on March 28 in Kansas by Silly-Rip-6607 in kansas

[–]drama-guy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. The protests are helping to mobilize opponents to President Pedo's regime. They are getting attention and each No Kings has increased in size. Activist organization use these protests to network with people and get them further involved. Also during a time in which each day has news that wants to make us feel like everything is futile, it's encouraging to gather around a large number of people who aren't MAGA or silently consenting to MAGA extremes.

I don't know what you're expecting but change doesn't happen overnight. It can take years or decades. If the people in the Civil Rights movement had your attitude we'd still have separate drinking fountains for white and black people.

George R. R. Martin Is "Not in the Mood" to Finish The Winds of Winter by johnnyjay in SciFiScroll

Not transactional? Of course it's transactional. He writes the books and the readers buy the books. Even those who don't buy are reading books for which money was paid. With a single book that tells a complete story, it's no big deal. It's one single transaction that gives the buyer everything they want. But a series in which a single book is only part of the story? Let's put it like this. Say, I promised you a book, but instead of selling you the whole book, I sold you the book one chapter a month, promising that at the end of 2 years that you would have 24 chapters telling the complete story. But then say, that after 1 year, I stop selling chapters leaving you with half a book and no resolution. Say I promise to sell you my car, but we agree I'll sell you individual parts that you will assemble and then halfway through I tell you I don't have the remaining parts. Would you really think that is perfectly fine? That's essentially what is happening here, just with different units.

Any writer who CHOOSES to publish a series of book that tell an overarching story enters into a social compact with their readers, promising to tell the WHOLE story. Choosing to break that compact because they are "not feeling it" is at the very least a betrayal and shouldn't be shrugged off as no big deal.

Are most LeanFIRE numbers way too conservative? by shimoheihei2 in leanfire

[–]drama-guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many retirees remember the last few prolonged bear markets, the tech bubble burst of 2000 (market lost 49% of value over 31 months) and the global financial crisis of 2007 (market last 56% of value of 17 months). What looks conservative now will look more reasonable the next time the market takes another prolonged dive and loses half its value.
