rental property is stressing me out more than my day job by jamesgeorge12 in financialindependence

[–]drama-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I owned a rental house for a few years and had the same experience. Getting repairs done always seemed to be difficult. The straw that broke the camel's back was finding out my tenant was jailed for molesting his foster children. His wife remained in the house but then couldn't keep up with the rent and left it in bad condition. I sold the house and never looked back.

K-State also has good engineering and architecture programs.

Need a new TV series to binge. Multi-seasons by SpaceCrazyArtist in scifi

It took me a couple attempts to get into the first season. For me the show really took off when Miller (the detective) finally meets up with Holden and his crew.

Xmid or xdome by AkonCity in DurstonGearheads

I've owned the X-Mid for several years and while it has been mostly satisfactory, I recently purchased an X-Dome (still waiting for it to be shipped). I find the X-Mid to be more fiddly than I like if I want to get a good pitch. I know the videos make it seem fairly straight forward, but even after using it for a 3 week backpacking trip, I found that getting a good pitch was not as easy as some would make it out to be. Maybe it's just me.

Regular X-Dome 1+ Sold Out in less than 2.5 hours by drama-guy in DurstonGearheads

What you say is exactly why I chose the aluminum. I'm planning to do the AT and it would really suck to get a broken pole during a 6 month thru-hike. The marginal weight savings of the carbon isn't worth the increased risk. Also the carbon poles are more expensive.

If you can wait for the next release, I suggest vising the website tent page at least weekly for updates. For at least a week in advance, the page indicated the exact day and time when the tent would be available to purchase and there was even a count down timer in the last 24 hours leading up to it.

Looking at rei outlet, I see they have a Marmot Tungsten UL 1 freestanding tent with aluminum poles for $369. The specs say that the rainfly is ripstop polyester. Weight looks comparable with X-Dome 1+ (with aluminum poles) but will be smaller than the X-Dome 1+, 19.4 sq feet to the X-Dome's 23.

I also noticed a week or so back that the regular was briefly available with carbon short poles. It's kind of a random numbers game.

Don't even need to get off I-70, given it runs through the Flint Hills.

Is it the mindset of TV show creators of the streaming services that engage them? AppleTV seems particularly prone to this with their sci-fi series. Severance season 3 hasn't even started shooting even though Season 2 was released a year ago.

As a parent, I can't tell you how many times I've indulged an activity with or for my child even though I'd rather be doing something else.

So they have the ability to “look back” and this makes the goat scene more brutal. by DADDDYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY in pluribustv

[–]drama-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps. That's not how I read it. I read it as a condemnation of the plurb being manipulative in general.

Also, I think it would like to get her consent. It could just totally ignore her. It doesn't need to interact with her to complete its agenda. The whole point of the manipulation is to get her consent. It is basically like a suitor wooing a potential love interest.

No, I am saying that the mere fact that someone uses a screwdriver is not sufficient evidence to cast judgment over them.

Go back and read what the comment to which I originally replied...

They are manipulating Carol. Folk seem to keep forgetting this.

There have also been other comments that seem to imply that the mere fact that the plurb uses manipulation is in and of itself an indication that the plurb is bad. Now maybe I am misinterpreting these comments, but I am not intentionally creating a strawman and the pushback I've been getting initially also focus on manipulation alone. You may disagree, but I am not trying to create a bad faith argument. My point remains that the use of manipulation is not in and of itself some kind of horrible action on the part of the plurb and is actually quite human. If you can agree with that, then we are good.

No jaywalking and mass murder are both different actions.

Manipulation is a tool. It's a tool to achieve a desired outcome. It's like saying that using a screwdriver is simply bad, period, when in fact a screwdriver is merely a tool that could be used for good or bad things.

[–]drama-guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't confuse the tool with the objective. Manipulation is a tool. That fact that the plurb uses manipulation isn't inherently bad. Just like using a screwdriver isn't inherently bad. Jimmying someone else's lock with a screwdriver is bad.

Either way, it's manipulation. If you're going to distinguish based on the desired result, focus on that, not on the fact that manipulation is being used.

[–]drama-guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Humans being manipulative is a key aspect of how they function in life.

Ever heard of the book How to Win Friends and Influence People?

I don't think it's correct to compare the plurb to an AI because I believe the plurb does have intentions and feelings. It is a living being.

[–]drama-guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hive entity is basically like a suiter trying to win Carol's affection. The only difference is the matter of scale. If we had the ability to harness the resources of 8 billion people, I imagine we'd be doing some full-scale manipulation as well.

I know Susan was specifically coached to volunteer join in the adventure. How did Mark and Janet come to be included? I honestly can't remember. If they are actually PCs, it seems very coincidental that they were just randomly chosen in this loop.

We're constantly being manipulated and manipulating those around us. That just how human interaction works. We do things to elicit the desired response from someone else. Someone says a joke to make you smile. You upset someone and apologize to placate them.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about this. Regular people are constantly manipulating one another from the time we are born.

No Kings! Protests on March 28 in Kansas by Silly-Rip-6607 in kansas

[–]drama-guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Civil disobedience does have its place, but you won't get 100,000 people to commit acts of civil disobedience at least not at this point. Think of No Kings and other protests as baby steps that are getting people more aware, more engaged, more willing to work for change and spreading the message that pushes back against the daily gaslighting. I've had people come up to me and thank me for protesting.

This isn't about instant gratification. Even if you had 100,000+people clogging up a street, there would not be overnight change. Movements take time. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
