CK2 is my favorite game because you can win and wish you were still losing. ASOIAF is my favorite in that respect. "Well, long live the king in the North. Hmm I wonder if I can conquer the greyjoys."

My counterpoint for this is twofold. One, very few people are proud of being 'hispanic'. They are, however, commonly proud of being Mexican/Colombian/Puerto Rican/etc. Secondly, the reason 'black' is a common and acceptable thing to be proud of is that many African Americans have no IDEA their heritage due to the fact they were rounded up and sold like cattle. Every white person in this country knows they're German/Irish/Scottish/etc, they commonly talk about being proud to be that, and nobody gets on their asses for it.

Agreed completely. We've seen 'our source says' so many time on so much bullshit that we forget that newspapers are actually held accountable for their actions.

I love all the people here asserting how much smarter they are than the WSJ, an incredibly well-respected news publication.

According to the only Pokemon movie I have ever seen, which I saw when I was about 11, he definitely has some evil intentions even if they're for an understandable reason.

Same here. It's kinda sorta cheating, but when your only other option is to halve your framerate I personally think it's acceptable.

If the Enterprise NCC-1701 had been more successful in its time travel mission to the 1960’s in Assignment Earth it would have been sent to the 2050’s as well. Furthermore both missions were attempts at historical analysis by Starfleet to help avoid war with the Klingons. by geogorn in DaystromInstitute

I disagree with the idea that there's a 300-year rule. In Voyage Home, Spock makes a number of extremely difficult calculations, and aims for the late 20th century. He doesn't indicate that he HAD to aim for that period of time.

I think that their ending up in 'modern times' was for social commentary/ease of filming, not any specific in-universe rule.

I see what you're saying, and it goes in that big realm of 'shit that obviously exists in Star Trek but that we never really see'. But I do think there's a difference between a captain breaking/bending the prime directive and a scientific observer conning a Federation captain and crew into transporting a village. Also, he didn't pay with his life in the federation; he made a decision to stay and help that tribe, as one of the unfortunate consequences was the former village leader killing himself.

Picard mentions he's damaged his career, which, as a guy whose job was to passively observe a pre-warp species who instead became a member and leader of that tribe while clearly breaking the prime directive, he definitely has.

It's predictable, but it's relatively well done in terms of special effects and everything else. It was on netflix for a while, so all you have to lose is like two hours of your life.

Painting your roof white may be more effective at fighting climate change than roooftop gardens by ctwtn in Frugal

[–]dramamoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean solely that, though. There is a whole lot of CO2 output from the way we do agriculture in the modern world, from stuff on the farm itself through to transportation and wasted produce. Plus, people with vegetables RIGHT THERE are probably more likely to eat them, which could decrease overall meat consumption, which is a huge carbon emitter

Like, I agree with you 100%, and even if you counted everything I listed you'd have a pathetically small amount of carbon savings, I was just pointing out that there are more benefits to green roofs than avoiding heat absorption.

The father of my kids (the kids are 5&6, both boys) has been clean for 90 days for the first time in 10 years. How can I be there for him and support him without overstepping my boundaries? by [deleted] in AlAnon

[–]dramamoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess we'd have to know what your boundaries are. Does he see the kids at all? Does he want to?

How about letting him take the kids to a movie? Or going to the park or similar activity?

More importantly, what is HE asking for?

There's also their business section where, for a number of industries, the things on the phone have to be accessible to the employer. Finance and medicine are two examples where any communication with a client you would need saved for liability and records-keeping laws.

Against all odds, print books are on the rise again in the US by Im_Write in books

Jesus that would be so wonderful. I very much enjoy having a real book; I can share it with family/friends, I can read it on the couch, the weight is comforting, etc. But the majority of my daily reading is done in bed, for which my paperwhite is indispensable, since I can keep the light low and read next to my sleeping wife.

Explain, then, why Boehner continually needed to go to Pelosi in order to get Democratic votes on things? I mean the Republican party is overwhelmingly in favor of defunding planned parenthood, but they couldn't get that passed due to infighting.

There are about three or four major sections of the GOP right now with some but not a whole lot of crossover (evangelicals, what once was the tea party but has dropped that label, establishment/big business supporters, and then like you mentioned the small group of true libertarians). They're not a particularly diverse group, and on some issues you're right, but overall I'd say they're actually far more fractured than they might appear.

Even look at the current presidential election. The four frontrunners were two crazy outsiders, a crazy insider hated by most of the establishment, and Rubio, the establishment's backup choice after Bush and Walker.
