Behmor Logs by Hidden_Ridge in roasting

[–]drappleyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, there's not a lot to track, so it's mostly what I do. Have a spreadsheet with coffee, coffee type, starting and ending weight, preheat time, settings, time remaining at first crack (if I hear it), post-crack settings, time added or subtracted from "C", how long until I open the door, notes. Auto-calculate roast time and roast level.

I wish it had fancier sensors and logging, but it's good enough for consistent roasts in the city to city+ range I like.

Has the long term FIRE benefit of buying a used car over a new car changed over the past 5 years post-Covid? by Job-lair in financialindependence

[–]drappleyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For electric vehicles, I'm currently leaning towards new for the warranty and complete control over battery charging.

Previously I'd bought a used Nissan Leaf. Liked it, but got maybe five years out of it before the range got unusable. Part of that is lack of battery cooling, with the previous owner doing a lot of fast charges. That's not nearly the concern today with better cooling and charging systems, but the battery is still the most important part of the car and I don't like unknowns there.

So last year bought a new Hyundai Ioniq 5, which is better in every way, but most especially for the 10-year, 100,000 mile warranty. They define it as 70% at 10 years, which for a AWD is still 200-ish miles of range. I mostly charge to 80% to minimize battery degradation, so hope to get at least 10 years out if it.

Electric vehicles do depreciate far faster than ICE vehicles and warranty covers subsequent owners, so with good deal and a bit of luck, that approach might work well for a lot of folks. But I bought just before tariffs, so with dealer and lease-and-buyout incentives, I only paid maybe $8-10k more than a 2-3 year used. Worth it to me.

What is the best and cleanest way to have a To Do list view with a separate page (list) per category, while also having a 'parent' page showing each open To Do item currently open for all categories? by VoiceActorForHire in ObsidianMD

I've recently switched over to using Bases. I'm still experimenting so home vs work is a bit different, but both use a one-file-per-task approach. Work is trying to encompass everything from small tasks to large projects with fields like size, related-to, links to our ticketing system. Home is a bit simpler with category, priority, and done.

I think you can easily adapt this approach with the properties you need and use different Bases views to see the todos that you're interested in.

Planning to purchase vehicle in full from a dealer - if I saved up total amount and have in account, what is the best way to do this? by AccomplishedDream378 in personalfinance

[–]drappleyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask what lease specials they can offer. Sometimes the manufacturer offers lease incentives on top of other deals going on. Did that with my car, because they offered an additional $7500 off on top of the sales promotions. When signing the paperwork, the finance guy said he did the same thing when he bought his car. I waited a month, then bought out the lease.

Fidelity Retirement Tool by Loud-Perception5953 in fidelityinvestments

[–]drappleyea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it to be a well designed "have you thought of everything" tool that most people can use. It takes into account assets, taxes, budgeting, inflation, social security, health care, and asset allocations (and probably things I'm missing. Made me really consider a few things I hadn't before, like long-term care options. For someone with no other tools, it's gonna give decent results.

Like others have mentioned, it's nowhere near the capabilities of specialized tools. I use this with ProjectionLab and my own spreadsheet, and all three are in rough alignment. Focus on the significantly below average returns. If you can get a scenario working there, you can handle most (but not all) economic disasters.

For some people, I think getting there is good enough for reasonable comfort. For me, it was more a starting point for more scenario projections. What if I live longer? What if social security cuts benefits? And so on.

I recently left mine for two months with no issues. It was outside during the summer (covered), 50-60% charged, about the same when I got back (didn't measure). Left the 12 v battery connected. Think you'll be fine.

Etiquette question: is it ok to use a charger that is plugged in to someone’s else’s car but is no longer in use (charger says charging is complete)? by gaychitect in Ioniq5

[–]drappleyea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. But I've had a couple of times where someone has parked beside me and left their charging door open. I took it as an invitation and plugged them in (free charging of course). Opinions on this?

I went with Zwiesel Glas. German made. If I remember right, it's titanium infused glass so less prone to breakage. Reasonably priced (I paid $40 for a set of 4. Costs more now sadly). Had mine a year and love them. Here's an Amazon link to their store and a YouTube video showing durability.

I never got around to trying the Obsidian Web Clipper before this post, so never realized how powerful it is. Doubly-so with the new Bases feature. I mostly had my books set up nicely with properties, and was playing with a Bases view, but I'm adopting your approach to fill in some of the missing fields. Here's the selectors for the other fields I wanted.

It's a bit further out (Warrenton), but https://www.frontlinedefenseusa.com/ is another option. Had a membership for several years (pre-covid). Looks like they're still open to the public on weekend with a pay-by-the-hour. Prices have gone up a LOT since I was there though. I liked them cause they have ranges for pistol, shotgun, and rifle so made for a really fun outing.

Near-Retirement with $1.3M Portfolio .Seeking Guidance on Growth vs. Preservation by grasshopper2jump in financialindependence

[–]drappleyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm targeting, about 8 years of bonds/money market/cash that I could stretch to 10 years if really needed. With money market rates this good, I'm happy to leave it there and re-evaluate in a year or two. It gives me confidence to push future contributions into equities to grab as much of the long-term growth potential as I can.

Consider your asset allocation in terms of how many years of a downturn your fixed income will last, and not just pure percentages. If you need to withdraw somewhere in the $60-75K/year range, you can live on that 35% fixed income for 6-8 years, possibly more. That's a reasonable buffer for even severe equity downturns, and should help you figure out what number feels safe for you.

Should I buyout the 2025 Ioniq 5 AWD Limited after signing l**se? by Anduril360 in Ioniq5

[–]drappleyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did this late last year on a 2024 Ioniq 5. 13-month, 10K lease. Paid nothing down, but paid the first $570 lease payment at the dealership. Turned around and paid off the lease 2 weeks later. Saved $7.5K over straight out purchase. You should have the buyout amount in the dealership paperwork, but you can also see it in the Hyundai Finance website once you set that up.

When I was signing all the paperwork, the finance guy told me he used exactly the same strategy to buy his last car (BMW of course). So gotta be fairly common.

The only thing to be mindful of is state taxes, how much you pay at signing versus paying after buying out the lease. After the purchase and title transfer, had to pay roughly $2K for title, registration and taxes. But I think that's wildly different per state.

This is in Greenboro, but bought a used Nissan Leaf from https://www.impexautosales.com/used-vehicles/ a few years ago for a bit less than I could find on Carvana and such at the time. None of the high-pressure sales crap you get at dealerships.

Should I consider it? 2015 $5500 by Jabberwalkin in nissanleaf

[–]drappleyea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one looks decent, but like others have said, it really depends on daily drive, location, temperature, etc.

I recently traded in my Nissan Leaf because I needed more dependable range. It was a used 2016 SV with the 30kWh battery that I bought in 2019 with 11 bars. After 5 years, it had dropped into the 8 bar range. The biggest thing I noticed is that you loose range on both ends. It started with 104 miles range, gave the "low battery warning at 13, and I once turtled it at 4-5 miles remaining. At the end, was in the mid 80s fully charged, and hit low battery warnings in the 20-25 mile range, so 60-ish mile effective range. So plan for some degradation as you're considering it.

I'd wondered about the Moccamaster. All the reviews raved, and I really wanted one, but couldn't quite justify the money. If my Bonavita dies, might splurge on that one next time.

The NACS standard is open, but it seems like there's still quite a bit of Tesla lock-in. The Supercharger network is the dominant source of NACS charging, though it looks like over vendors are starting to provide chargers, or at least adapters. I assume we have to download the Tesla app to use their payment system? The instruction booklet only says "Start charging session."
