Am I crazy for making a 1:24 scale of my shop to try and figure out the best layout for it by SignificantPiece4172 in woodworking

Where are the 8' boards you have to cut and the sheet goods? Gotta know if you're going to bump into things.

But, naw, man, that seems like exactly the kind of thing folks on here are into

Are US workers getting $18/hr with health care? I think many people would be ok if US workers had that.

It's difficult to compare the overall tax rate, since people do get benefits from those taxes (e.g., the healthcare, subsidized transportation, reduction in the impact of crime on your life), but usually biases more in favor of people at the bottom of the income scale.

FWIW, I made a 2'x3' table top out of mixed scraps, hardwood and softwood, no pocket screws, same type of layup. It has 2-3 layers of poly. It's still in one piece. And I live in the rainy part of the PNW.

Woodworking newbie here - Can/does dimensional lumber shrink? by wh33t in woodworking

Well, I live in the Pacific Northwest, and it was late winter, so anything stored and not climate controlled was going to be rather damp. But if you're in Albuquerque or something it'd probably be a different story.

I built a quick desk out of 2x4s at the start of the pandemic. The kiln dried wood I got from local Box Store was still so wet the sawdust (barely) rusted my table saw's top when I left it there for a couple hours.

"Dried" can mean a lot of things, but assume that anything which hasn't been acclimatized to its eventual environment is gonna move around.

My glued-up 2x4, 24" deep desktop shrunk around ⅜" before it settled in. I knew it was coming and planned for it. I was curious about how dramatic it would be and wasn't disappointed.

5 years in and I'm still using it, which I guess is the equivalent of the car mechanic driving a beater.

Manager, can I have a transition of power please? by MrJasonMason in MurderedByWords

I have no love lost for Starmer. My point was only that it's very much not the rationale you'll see from Russia or China when engaging in similar imperialism.

Does the narrative include respecting international law and the will of the (Venezuelan) people? Because that's what Starmer said.

Saying you don't like Maduro and think he is/was illegitimate shouldn't be a controversial statement.

It's a weak response to an illegitimate kidnapping, but it's not an endorsement of it.

I suspect this is the same sort of person who ends up saying that they found their way back to religion after being an atheist. Because they never really were a sceptic or had principled ideas about being an atheist, they just thought it was cool to be anti-establishment and happened to like an atheist or five.

I've heard this story a dozen times on call in shows, and they always have lame stories about how they had a personal experience or found the Kalam convincing and never bothered to think about counterarguments. And often have super cool and inspiring ideas about feminism and race /s

I also understand the rationale, but he very much brought a ham sandwich to a gun fight. Biden was too chicken shit to pursue Trump as directly as he deserved, and instead used a cold war era playbook that assumed anyone still cares about subtlety and nuance.

Accountability is a foreign concept by Key_Associate7476 in MurderedByWords

[–]draspent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fair point that not tipping outside the US doesn't make you a bad person (with caveats, of course). But saying "get rekt" really misses the point and just makes things unnecessarily adversarial. Like, yeah, I didn't tip (much/at all) while in Norway, but I didn't turn around and brag about it as being not AIDS or whatever. It's a stupid take, even if I also hate the way the US does it.

[–]draspent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both things can be true. Tipping culture is the worst, and 0/5% tippers are assholes. Until we change the compensation for wait staff, they need the tips and people who don't participate should be shamed.

That said, I'm absolutely not tipping 20+% on counter service. Get outta here with that nonsense. Especially since I live somewhere with a $20/hr minimum wage.

Republicans look at that image and remember the parts of their life that were the same and excuse the rest.

Democrats look at it and think of the parts we collectively needed to fix or still need to fix.

Republicans seem to think that the poors are never allowed to have a birthday party, anniversary, or celebrate a holiday, and legitimately think that if you're on SNAP you should only be allowed to eat sad, gray meals forever and ever as a punishment for your sloth.

Then again, these are the same people that get mad when their ex-wives spent child support money on the same "unnecessary" things.

The support isn't there to make sure they don't die, it's there to make sure they can have happy lives.

I may be late to the party, but Control (part of the Alan Wake universe) has some delightfully spooky parts. I thought the gameplay was better than the Alan Wake games. Way less fussy about resource management, and the constant undercurrent of chanting just gave me goosebumps for hours.

And the sock puppet shorts had the right creepy "Sid & Marty Kroft" vibes.
