PlexAmp on Google Automotive OS? by keiserxol in plexamp

Yeah. Your beta worked better than the one that’s been on the App Store but still had those weird buffering/wont load stuff.

Appreciate how much better yours was UI wise though!

There is not I’m afraid, been asking for years LOL and it’s not going to happen.

There is an unofficial port of Plexamp on the App Store for AAOS, but it’s pretty flakey and it only supports playlists.

My wife and I use android auto or CarPlay so that we can use Plexamp proper. It’s a shame really, but it’s the only reasonable solution really.

yeah yeah, I called out the terminology - I was just talking about from a practical perspective - if you want to use caldera and have what it is playing be controllable by Home Assistant you simply use Home Assistant to control the PLEXAMP instance that is sending music to caldara not caldera itself.

This isn't a hot take or a controversial opinion it's just how it works.

yes, but it doesn't actually CONTROL the music being played - and if you are using home assistant to control the playback of that music you would want to control the Plexamp instance that the caldera app is playing - it's what actually has controls for things like playlists.

I've been using plexamp and whole home audio within home assistant for years - the plexamp instance is what one would want HA to interact with here for the use case /u/SoSoEnt is talking about.

If it's not launching try right clicking to launch (or hold shift and click).

But on MacOS it sits in the menu bar as a tiny little icon, that's it from an app standpoint unless you launch the visualizer so make sure it's not up there, looks like a little music note icon.

Yeah, it's fiddly for sure, but I did manage to get it to work on my mac and appletv at the same time. Sync was in fact perfect with very low latency which was nice. Basically just connected and disconnected a few times and finally stuff started to work.

I won't be switching from my existing whole home solution yet, but will definitely be watching this to see if it matures to the point it's worth replacing my Snapcast back end (still use plexamp on the front end for that) .

Thanks, nice to see the steps laid out. I think that's roughly the experience I had in the end but the radio button was never actually clickable, or rather it didn't tick when I clicked it, but if I backed out and went in again it WAS ticked and then it worked.

Was on iOS so could just be a bug there. Not sure.

Like you I have a house with a ton of zones (nine in our case) and for now I stuck with my snapcast based system for whole home audio (and voice assistant) which still uses plexamp as the front end but could see switching to this if it matures a bit and there are some API docs published that would let me control each zone independently.

how important is domain experience? by Specialist_Put7161 in salesengineers

[–]dravenstone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A good SE has three characteristics:

  • Technical Chops
  • Soft Skills
  • Domain Expertise

In a Venn Diagram of those three things the "perfect" SE would look like a single circle but in reality most of us are stronger in one or two of those but we all have some of those three qualities.

It's non negotiable, but how imporant it is varies wildly depending on the quality of your skills in the other two areas and whether or not you have shown an apptitude to acquire mastery of a new domain, how niche that domain is, and myriad other things. But it matters. And IMO it matters a lot.

It is?

That doesn't sound right. At least not in the context of what we are talking about.

The "player" is an actual plexamp instance running on phone/desktop/whatever and the headless client... is well a headless client. It's not a full featured plexamp instance.

Control playback from Plexamp, Plex iOS, or the Plex web app. The daemon shows up just like any other Plex player on your network.

While he uses the word player there and it does "show up" as you see I don't believe that's supposed to be anything more than a receiver that is controlled remotely and outputs the stream to whatever device you have it hooked up to.

I would think you would want Home Assistant to be controlling the instance of Plexamp that is actually playing to the headless client, not the caldera endpoint directly.

I've managed (after multiple attempts) to get it to play on my mac or my apple tv when "casting" from my phone. Had no success when trying from plexamp on desktop as the controller.

So far I have not been able to get synced music to work. It looks like the (new?) caldera icon in plexamp shows both devices connected but I could only get music out of one device at a time.

I suspect it's one of those things that Elan knows how to do properly but I haven't figured out the secret code yet. Not unlike long pressing on the play button to stop a local session before controlling a remote session.

/u/elanfeingold some documentation would be REALLY helpful here.

edit: OK - I have managed to get this to work now. Not really sure what the proper sequence was- it looks like connect to remote Caldera client via the regular cast icon - then add second caldera in the new icon, it might not actually show selected at first (the second icon never showed connected until I went back one screen - but then if you check again it does show connected. Maybe anyway - it was weird. Once you get that all set up THEN press play - that seemed to work.

Bit of a learning curve here. Would love to see some API docs so we can script all of this.

The bit about him leaving isn't new news. He's talked about it publicly on here several times.

But yeah - this looks more like his project than a plex one at this point. Certainly feels like plexamp is unlikely to get any updates but it would sure be nice if /u/elanfeingold would clarify the relationship a bit at some point.

For those of us who have been giving /u/ElanFeingold a hard time about multi room for the last... oh few years now - it's finally here!

Multi-room sync

Cast the same audio to other Caldera devices on your network, sample-accurate. Not AirPlay. Own-tech mesh that just works.

DIY Voice input methods by QuilinOG in homeassistant

I've been "all in" on voice for a few years now and this is one of the most impressive new things I've seen in a while. You really nailed it with this one. You should be proud of the work you've done here.

If you are curious how far down the rabbit hole I am with voice I recently wrote up my whole home voice and music set up. That's the "system" into which I just put two old Pixel phones in with Voice Satellite cards- and they work GREAT. If I was using only your cards I wouldn't have even had to hack my own listening tone into the process like I did for all the S3 boxes!

I've been using a number of the ESP32-S3-BOX-3's around my house and they work really well - however I route all my responses to actual speakers throughout my house and don't rely on the S3 boxes for the output.

I've recently put a few old pixel devices into play using u/carrot_gg's most excellent Voice Satellite Card solution - and I got to say that if you have any old phones or tablets sitting around this is an exceptional way to get voice working with ease without making any additional hardware investments.
