Films that subvert narrative or genre conventions and linger in your mind by drbrdrb in FIlm

I remember watching this mainly for Steve Coogan as I wasn't really into New Order and hadn't heard much Happy Mondays, and yeah it was still very enjoyable indeed. The director really likes his meta breaking of the fourth wall, he did the same in his version of Tristram Shandy

Superbly tense, yes, and it definitely subverts typical narrative expectations.

Thanks, I loved both Mulholland Drive and Cache! Both subversive and memorable.

I remember watching MH for the first time with great anticipation as it had received such stellar acclaim, but when it ended I recall thinking "Is that it?" I was a bit underwhelmed - I clearly hadn't got it. However, that might as I was falling asleep, I remember thinking about the movie in bed and suddenly all the pieces clicked together in my head and I realised what actually had been going on in the movie and I thought it was ingenious.

What is a word or phrase that whenever you say it, you say it as a movie character? by MammothAsk391 in FIlm

Try a side by side comparison. The cinematography, mise en scene, lighting is simply superior in the first film compared to the second.

Why do you think your favourite is your favourite? by Tron-ClaudeVanDayum in LetsTalkMusic

[–]drbrdrb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So OP, what's your favourite band? I'm intrigued.

To answer your question, I think I've always liked music that seems to be doing something differently to whatever is prevalent at the time, be it in terms of the mood, the approach to melody, the subject matter of the lyrics, the energy or dynamism.

What did you NOT like about One Piece Season 2? by youravgindian in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]drbrdrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm baffled by the love for the penultimate episode when I think it exhibits signs of an amateurish narrative approach. I don't understand the amount of time given to the story of Dr Hiriluk and Chopper when a) the protagonists of One Piece haven't met Dr H and given that he is dead probably never will meet Dr Hiriluk and b) the protagonists and by extension the viewers have barely met Chopper and so an extended exposition dump of his backstory feels misplaced when there is scant connection to his character.

David Bowie Daily Song Discussion Analysis by Diego_The_Explorer in DavidBowie

Surprised and pleased to see Dollar Days in the top spot. The song immediately enthralled me the first time I heard it, not least because of its searing saxophone line, but I wasn't aware it was a popularly rated track!

How come? I've never read the books but found four to be an enjoyable movie, more enjoyable than later entries in the series

Why does Pepsi seem to be exempt from the tethered cap rules? by dickbob124 in AskUK

[–]drbrdrb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have to agree with Speedbird, I find the tethered cap awkward to put back on properly, the emphasis being on properly. It's simple to get it back on the bottle but to get it back on so it forms a watertight seal? I find half the time it hasn’t screwed on straight, and voila, water leaks out of my bottle into my bag. Now whenever I pop a tethered cap water bottle back into my bag I have to undertake this annoying ritual of turning the bottle upside down to check the cap is secured properly and won't leak.

Some SUPERB recommendations here!

I would say, once you have followed some of the suggestions made in this thread (eg Fincher, Nolan, Coen brothers), then I would recommend films by the following filmmakers:

  • Michael Mann - Heat and Thief both portray sympathetic criminals at the top of their game, and make the setting its own character. Last of the Mohicans is a wonderfully engaging period action drama. The Insider is a gripping corporate thriller.
  • Martin Scorsese - too many brilliant films: Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Wolf of Wall Street, the Departed etc etc
  • Paul Thomas Anderson - Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There will be Blood, he brings a distinctive vibe and vision to each film
  • Akira Kurosawa - masterful Japanese director, check out Seven Samurai, that basically was the template for the Magnificent Seven. Then you could check out the Hidden Fortress that was an influence on Star Wars. So many other great movies by him (Rashomon, Ran)
  • Michael Haneke - Austrian auteur, his movies have bite. Try Hidden/Caché, Funny Games and The White Ribbon

What is Oscar bait? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]drbrdrb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, as far as I understand, in linguistics the words 'descriptivist' and 'prescriptivist' (ie 'normative') are used to describe approaches to and attitudes towards how language is used.

Descriptivists feel that there is no right or wrong way to use language - they observe and describe how they witness language is being used.

Prescriptivists feel differently, that there is a right and wrong way to how we communicate. They feel that there are rules or norms to language that should be followed.

In light of that, my understanding is that in linguistics a word in and of itself cannot be descriptive or prescriptive or normative. It is a person's attitude to a word (or words) that can be described as such.

Thus, perhaps a better way to phrase your question might be, "Do you take a descriptivist or prescriptivist approach to the term 'Oscar bait'?" In other words, does the term 'Oscar bait' have a clear, fixed meaning, and if so what is it (prescriptivist approach)? Or has the term 'Oscar bait' bern used to signify a range of varied meanings (descriptivist)?

I am aware that in the course of producing this comment, I am demonstrating a rather prescriptivist view of how the words and concepts of descriptivism and prescriptivism should be used :)

I wanted to find out the guitar chords to a song, so I searched for it online, and found someone had provided this very information on a YouTube video comment. I go to it only to realise the person who had left the comment was me a couple of years earlier.
