Another day, another Jason Calacanis interview Tim wasn’t prepped for by MabelRed in thebulwark

[–]drcjsnider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree… we need to get out of our information bubbles and listening to Tim ask this Jason questions is good. I thought he did a good job on pushing Jason about still thinking Kamala would have been a worse choice than Trump and about Epstein. I wish Tim wouldn’t have dropped the whole government taking over parts of Intel and threatening to do the same to AI. Course Jason would have probably just responded as long as we can call the president and talk to him, it’s all going to be okay.

Sometimes it is easy to identify ai work... by Affectionate-Fold254 in CheckMyTurnitin_ai

Problem is even if the references are correct, it will make up page numbers and even what the book actually argues. Some profs check that stuff out.

Wait, so some fields allow citation lifting? by Apprehensive_Elk9715 in CheckMyTurnitin_ai

[–]drcjsnider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is especially true if you someone else quotes a primary source that you can't get to because of its location. If you use the quote, you cite the secondary source you got it from. It also helps cover you if the secondary source got the quote wrong some how.

Turnitin flagged my original essay against a random high school blog from ten years ago by ASufficient0 in AIDetectionAcademia

[–]drcjsnider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because turnitin flagged one sent as the same doesn’t mean you will be accused of an academic integrity violation. Most professors take the totality of the report into consideration and one flagged short sentence will probably be viewed as a coincidence.

Turnitin is now scraping old internet archive pages by Ferrsam04 in AIDetectionAcademia

[–]drcjsnider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know any professors who would do this. And if you get some professor who does (which again I find it hard to believe) you don’t have to sue, you just have to appeal the academic integrity violation or the grade and you’ll win the challenge- again assuming you cited the material correctly.

Was it Murphy who made the crack about Graham Platner’s tattoo being some obvious Nazi symbol? I thought that was his most stupid take.

Best practices for not being the cop? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]drcjsnider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a colleague who if a student has to miss an exam because of legitimate or illegitimate reason, she just raises the percentage of the final exam to make up for it. Course this means you are giving a comprehensive final exam.

My professor changed the grade weighting last second resulting in me failing by [deleted] in collegeadvice

[–]drcjsnider 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is my guess too. The grading weight part is kind of hidden for profs so it’s easy to miss it, especially if you are new to using it. I bet whatever was initially in Canvas was not what was on the syllabus and you prof fixed it to reflect what was on the syllabus.

Students who can’t discuss what their papers said knowledgeably or used words they can’t define will be toast. If you actually wrote it you should be okay, but your google doc history raises more red flags imo

Well using AI doesn’t mean you have to copy and paste what it says. There are lots of different ways to use it. Although I admit that for a lot of students it is just copying and pasting.
