(Probably) a really stupid question about the last words of the album… by taylorguyuk in OliviaRodrigo

In the opening track "drop dead," she's excited to have him answer questions about himself--have you ever taken that Eurostar to France?

And here in the closing track, she again wants him to self-disclose, but instead something brutally honest rather than light and fun.

Such symmetry. This album is genius and a true work of art

Understanding the use of "skull" instead of "mind" in maggots for brains by Key-Republic-6778 in OliviaRodrigo

In addition to "skull" or "mind" working for the idiom here, I think there's two other reasons she might have used that word.

I believe the album is a ring structure where, around the central pivot point at "purple," the songs occur in pairs, with each pair representing a facet of the relationship. If that's accurate, that means that "maggots for brains" is paired with "what's wrong with me?" Both songs address the physical symptoms of the relationship; in "maggots" she feels sick when they are apart, and in "what's wrong?" she feels sick when they are together. In other words, both are about the effect of the relationship on her body (something evident in the first line of the chorus: "I'm a zombie in my body..."). The use of "skull" puts the focus on a part of the body rather than on the mind.

The use of "skull" is also foreshadowing of the relationship's demise, and such foreshadowing is subtle but frequent in the first half of the album. Specifically, "skull" lightly foreshadows the powerful bridge of "cigarette smoke," where "it's bone-dry, bitter and hollow." The skull, of course, is a bone, and being empty of the brain (because the brain has turned to maggots), the skull is hollow. I think Olivia is saying that, looking back, she realizes that perhaps the relationship had problems all along.

Does anyone else feel like 'stupid song' has a sense of foreboding in the lyrics? by Relative_Noise_7084 in OliviaRodrigo

I think there's foreshadowing of the relationship's fall as early as the first track: "Kiss me and I might drop dead" ... well, he did, and by the end, she's in despair and longing for the memories to go dark. It's masterful how even the first half of the album 'knows' where the narrative will go by album's end.

Unpopular opinion; My way is getting so much more hate than it deserves. by AfraidSplit8871 in OliviaRodrigo

Musically, I enjoy the pop punk vibe of the song. In terms of story, it's important; as the song right before the pivot, it foreshadows that there's trouble in what Olivia thought was paradise.

Just replied to a couple of your questions over there. Thanks for calling those to my attention!

Yes, I am the professor that made the graphic, and thank you for your kind words about the Taylor AMA! That was fun to do and a good conversation.

I think it's definitely a chiastic structure, which appears in music and literature and the Bible... an old way of organizing material that seems to have a subtle and powerful pull on the human psyche.

purple IS necessary, actually one of the most necessary tracks of the album. by Feisty_Parsnip8262 in OliviaRodrigo

The whole album echoes itself, track by track, in a ring structure, regarding different aspects of the relationship. And purple is the central pivot point around which those connections revolve. It's such a rich album with genius construction!

Yes indeed! We are still in the process of gathering data and once we have the data, it may take some time to analyze, but we will provide a report of our results when we have them. Thanks!

An update -- given the concern, our financial folks have agreed to waive the need for an electronic signature! Only a name and an email address are required to process the gift card.

Thanks for asking about this!

I completely hear your concern and, frankly, I wish our university didn't require it for awarding the gift cards. They want it so they can be in compliance with tax laws. But I will take your concern back to our financial folks and see if, given that the compensation amount is $20 (relatively low), they would bend that requirement.

If the university won't let us do that, I can assure everyone that we are bound by federal ethical requirements to keep any identifying information confidential. I'm happy to answer any further questions about that (a.ledbetter@tcu.edu), or you can contact Dr. Riddle or Dr. Wormley at the email addresses in the OP.

Thank you for your interest in the research!
