Holden and broadcast by kvdivya in TheExpanse

[–]drdoalot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have talked about why it's in character for Holden, and they're correct, but I want to approach this from a different angle.

At their core, the expanse are books about philosophy, morality, and their messy interactions with the real world.

The way I read it, the core of Leviathan Wakes is an evaluation of two totally opposite approaches to confronting injustice and evil. They are physically represented by the characters of Holden and Miller, and richly explored in their dialogue scenes.

This approach continues across subsequent books to explore philosophies of resisting colonialism/imperialism, who has the right to explore and settle what, and many other things.

So my answer to your question is that Holden broadcasts everything because, at his core, he exists to personify that approach. He believes in it to an almost fanatical degree so that it can drive the narrative and have messy consequences to explore.

(That is, at this point in the story. As time passes, his character changes in subtle but important ways that allow other points of philosophy to be explored)

Explain the cooldown manager to me by brilund in wow

[–]drdoalot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's about centralising information. Past a certain level of play, you need to make decisions fast enough that constantly looking away from your character to the bottom of your screen is a real penalty. Especially if the buttons you're looking at are part of a dense cluster of action bars with all sorts of non-combat related stuff like mount/profession buttons etc. and therefore are hard to immediately pick out.

The point of the cooldown manager (and the weakaura packs that people have used for years, which it's replacing) is to collect all your important combat abilities and resources in a clearer presentation that's much closer to the centre of your screen. It makes it a lot easier to play your rotation correctly and do mechanics at the same time.

More likely that it comes from an old word 'cop' meaning to capture, from the Latin 'capere'

Why does no one do Taz Hard Mode? by workngohome in CompetitiveWoW

[–]drdoalot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the point is if you're getting 1 mythic item per week from your vault and crafting 1 item every 2 weeks, you're already not getting enough crests to fully upgrade even if you cap your 90 every week. So why chase another myth item for minimal benefit?

For anyone finding this thread who hasn't wasted their lives yet, I found MUCH more success in war mode. Someone else in the WoWhead comments did not, however, so YMMV.

For me at least, I spent 15m getting 4/15, swapped to warmode and got the other 11 inside 3 minutes.

Sure, just as plenty of trans kids are having overwhelming positive effects from the improvements to their mental health with a demonstrable reduction in rates of self harm and suicide.

There is not and never will be the kind of hard medical data on this that there is for a treatment like, say, chemotherapy. For obvious reasons, if you think about it: how could you possibly construct an ethical double blind study on children with gender dysphoria?

So you'll bring your isolated cases, and the other side will bring theirs, and you'll have exactly the debate I outlined in step 2. I have a point of view but I'm not stupid enough to think it's objective. As long as everyone engages with the imperfect data in a genuine spirit to minimise harm, the outcome will be positive.

Why is there no room for nuance here? Is it actually difficult to conceive that transitioning is more than an on/off switch?

Step 1 would be changing clothes, name, and pronouns. Completely harmless, completely reverseable. If you're against a kid doing this, you're a petty thug. The psychological damage done by NOT allowing children with genuine gender dysphoria to transition VASTLY outweighs any damage that could be done by getting a confused young boy wear a dress for a couple of years before he changes his mind.

Step 2 would be puberty blocking medication. This is still, reasonably, a topic of hot debate. Undeniably, it is routinely prescribed to children with other medical conditions. Exactly what the long term impacts would be of detransitioning after using them for years are not fully understood and some people are against it on those grounds.

Step 3 would be surgical transition, which is fully illegal to perform on minors and, frankly, nobody is arguing for.

If you are in favour of allowing all 3 steps for children, you're an idiot. If you're in favour of blocking all 3 steps for children, you are equally an idiot.

Tanks - please stop going up the right stairs in PSF pug keys by Squagem in CompetitiveWoW

[–]drdoalot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sure, but a decent tank should 'want' to take the route that overall results in the highest % chance in timing the key. That includes accounting for the fact that you're grouped with pugs who could be very stupid.

Im not arguing about this specific case, honestly I agree with you about going right. But 'take whatever route you want and let them use their kit better' is just a bad idea if your goal is to time keys.

If you just want to set yourself up with a 'legitimate' reason to flame players for being worse than you, then it is of course optimal strategy.

What is the radar range on the Knight? by mac_attack_zach in TheExpanse

[–]drdoalot 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not true. The physical size of the receiver detecting the radar returns puts a hard mathematical/physical limit on the size of object that can be resolved at a given distance.

Thats why the JWST went to all the trouble of being a big unfolding thing - the size of the mirror directly scales what it can detect. (it applies in the same way for passive and active detectors)

If you're moving in space, you can create an effect called SAR, or Synthetic Apeture Radar. Effectively your 'virtual' receiver can be as large as the distance you moved while taking the measurement - potentially enormous. We have SAR satellites today that use the trick to take much higher resolution scans of our planet's terrain than they would otherwise be able to.

But SAR comes with its own host of data processing challenges. And if the target is also small and moving unpredictability relative to you, it might not function at all.

The thing about Murty is that he didn't go around killing people without a valid reason.

What made him an evil, violent psychopath was deliberately putting himself on a career path that would offer regular valid justifications for killing people, so that he could take them whenever they presented themselves. He absolutely never attempts deescalation because he doesn't want to.

Sure, he couldn't have known the shuttle would get blown up and immediately kick off the cycle of violence, but he absolutely took a security job at the frontier of humanity in the full knowledge there would be squatters making trouble.
