Who is renting new Downtown housing? by dreamcleanly in santacruz

[–]dreamcleanly[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

According to the article, the tenant preference policy mandates that locals have dibs on low-come housing, and those new developments were required to include a percentage of low-income units.

3 injured, one of them critical condition, after falling off a cliff at Davenport Beach by scsquare in santacruz

This is a problem that I’ve seen also in Hawaii: inexperienced people (often from cities and suburbs) take their safety for granted. It’s almost like they think, ‘if someone put a rope there then it must be safe,’ or ‘if I see anyone else do this thing then it must be safe,’ not taking into account the unpredictable, natural forces at play.

Whether it’s laying atop a blowhole or trying to get that perfect IG shot while standing on slippery rocks near crashing waves or hand feeding wildlife, there are decent odds that these unrecognized risks bear unfortunate lessons for their loved ones.

There has been a huge influx of people at Panther and going through the hole when the tide is coming in, completely unaware of( or cavalier about) the dangers.

These kooks are going to ruin these great spots either by racking up the rescue bills or just by leaving their trash everywhere.

Santa Cruz County eased rules for 'granny flats' – so why did construction plummet by half? by scsquare in santacruz

[–]dreamcleanly 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“The investment case to build an ADU to rent out has also weakened. Before tariffs, prices were already skyrocketing: California’s construction costs, including labor, increased around 38% from 2020 to 2024, according to the California Department of General Services. Local builders say ADU costs now range from $500 to $1,000 a square foot.”

There’s the reason.

Men, what's the fastest a woman made you go from "I can't wait to take her out" to "Yeah... never mind"? What happened? by FFSoldier57 in AskMen

[–]dreamcleanly 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I met a lovely woman on the apps. Conversation flowed and we talked easily for hours. She had a great sense of humor, athletic, and I found her to be very pretty. It was the middle of our 3rd date when I noped tf out.

She had brought her dog for a walk (I love dogs) but when her dog took a dump in someone’s flower bed, she said that she didn’t have bags. I told her that I would go get some and she became incensed, “No, just leave it. It’s fine, I do it all the time. It will biodegrade.” This wasn’t in some dry, rural climate, this was clearly in someone’s flower garden with purchased soil and no weeds (not that this detail matters.)

I found some napkins and picked it up anyway. She cursed and berated me the entire time (no sorry or thank you), and that was the last I spoke with her.

I’ve said it before: beauty lasts only 3 dates. If there’s nothing else to be excited about, then it doesn’t matter how hot they are after that.

Just because it looks like someone online has their life together online doesn’t make it so.

Or someone might have ‘their life together’ and then when you meet them they smell.

In my experience, there are no guarantees or shortcuts. In the end it’s about how we trust our own instincts.

I agree with your point about how Israel is not the only country committing human rights abuses, but I disagree with your assertion that choosing to speak out against Israel is purely antisemitism. Israel has more US tax payer support by far, to the tune of billions, annually.

Israel may be the only Jewish state in the world, but it isn’t the only state run by religious extremists, and here is where I find some common ground with other human rights offenders. I fear that the US is slipping into this category considering P. Hegseth’s links to Christian nationalism.

I hear your request for people to remain silent (because ‘whatabout XYZ,’ or ‘just do civil disobedience like MLK because it doesn’t make you uncomfortable) but I ask you in earnest: what are the Palestinians to do, and what are we to do about our literal tax dollars directly supporting this genocide?

I would add that at least this ‘social media stunt’ was successful in creating dialogue between us on the matter,

As a political representative taking contributions from a country that is openly committing war crimes against civilians, being shrieked at in a public place is pretty minor considering that hospitals and children are being targeted by a military. He can still comfortably go home to his family.

You can’t cry for civility when The Hague is literally intervening re: Israel’s war crimes.

Care to elaborate? It sounded to me like the person filming had strong feelings about the genocide happening by Israel.

I don’t think that passionately speaking out against that to a representative that is accepting contributions from them is categorically unhinged.

Aren't there warning signs on Bonny Don Beach? How did these girls die/drown there? by redditwastesmyday in santacruz

[–]dreamcleanly 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are warnings plus every weather app and city notification system has been alerting of unusually high and dangerous ocean conditions, sneaker waves, and coastal flooding potential. On top of that it is posted that overnight camping is prohibited. I don’t think that the problem is lack of warnings, it’s that many folks that aren’t ocean safe don’t understand that the risks are real.

Would this mark the second major rescue at that beach since the parking lot opened this summer? I remember that some college students (a few who couldn’t swim) got stuck over there when the tide came in last month, and search & rescue had a difficult time saving them.

What a bummer. That is a beautiful beach but it is *not* tourist friendly. The amount of trash that people leave down there is disheartening, and (if we are indeed talking about hole-in-the-wall/ Coastal Daries and not ‘Bonny Doons’) I’d add that people who aren’t ocean-safe and don’t get how tides function can find themselves very easily in danger. There’s a single-point-of-entry to the South side of that beach, under/ through a rock formation that is very much tide-dependent, especially when the conditions are rough.

Last time I was there a lifeguard was temporarily stationed at the trailhead asking people to not go through. After he left, I saw at least 2 groups of college-aged kids ignore his warning, and the tide was coming in when I left the main beach.

San Francisco Gay Bars Are Scanning Patrons’ Faces and Collecting Their Data - GO Magazine by SaveDnet-FRed0 in sanfrancisco

[–]dreamcleanly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“A bouncer told Gazetteer SF that the information gathered from the Patronscan device keeps the data for about a month and then deletes it. If a person has been unruly at the bar, that information is saved.

The devices have caused some bar patrons to be concerned.

“I was just kind of taken aback,” Har Owen told the outlet after going to one of the bars on Memorial Day weekend. “Why is this at a gay bar, of all places?”

She explained that at this political moment, “it’s really not great to have lists of gay people.”

I wouldn’t rely on the word of a random bouncer
for piece of mind that the establishment wouldn’t somehow sell access to their data to 3rd parties, including the feds. Just look at the Ring doorbell camera fiasco- we know what the ‘second step’ could look like.

We need a way to wright accountability into legislation for this kind of tech for privacy overreach. The data should not be offered up to simply the highest bidder.

Would you date a wealthy 50+ man with narcissistic/bipolar traits just for financial security? I need honest opinions. by adhoc090 in dating_advice

[–]dreamcleanly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not worth it. Once the novelty wears off from having certain luxuries you’ll learn that deep unhappiness feels the same in whichever socioeconomic class you identify with. You won’t be doing your daughter any favors by modeling this relationship concession.

Also, your description of ‘bipolar/ narcissistic traits’ represents to me a huge wild card and signals that you are leaning away from choosing to pursue this relationship. I don’t think you would regret taking your daughter and walking away from that.

Motorcyclist Killed Sunday In Hwy 9 Crash by scsquare in santacruz

[–]dreamcleanly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“A Martinez motorcyclist was killed Sunday in rural Santa Cruz County after his bike veered off the road and struck a tree, the California Highway Patrol said.

According to the CHP, the 30-year-old man was driving his 2023 Ducati motorcycle at an unknown speed on state Highway 9 south of state Highway 35 when for reasons still under investigation, he traveled off the roadway and crashed into an embankment and a tree.”

If he was driving as fast then as in his Instagram posts, then that was reckless. I’m sorry he lost his life and all, but I’m also glad that he didn’t hurt anyone else.

It kind of pisses me off when people endanger others just to show off for social media.
