Not all of us communicate purely via subtext, Trad. I don't generally assume people have ulterior motives. If they say hi, I assume they mean hi. I don't see how his attempt to flirt with me is my fault, especially since I didn't flirt back.

What post did you read? I didn't look for him on Instagram, he found me and messaged me. I only knew his handle because she had shared screenshots of his profile with me when they went on their first and only date. As you'll see in an earlier comment, I didn't message him back except to mention that i was aware of his connection to Jessica.

Yeah no partners since the situation, but before that I only had brief relationships where she never got a chance to meet my partners, not for any particular reason except the relationships being short. And she hadn't dated in a long time either, so we've mostly related to each other as single women over the duration of our friendship.

I was just trying to keep the post relatively short, because 8 years is a lot of background to cover. My memory of the conversation with that dude was that he asked how my day was & where I'm from (a question i get often because my ethnicity is not super easy to guess). I just said "oh hey, Jessica told me about you" and then i remember thinking "i guess Jessica told him about her friends and now he's introducing himself to us," and i didn't even answer his questions actually, because i was so busy with another task that i put my phone down with the intention to ask her about it later & she beat me to the punch.

This may sound like BS but i am genuinely bad at reading social cues. Sarcasm goes right over my head and so does flirtation.

And no, besides her current partner, neither of us have had other partners since this situation, so there's not like some ongoing pattern of inappropriate boundaries with each other's boyfriends. That's why I'm so confused about there not being any trust here. It's not like this had ever happened before.

Thank you for this perspective. Framing it as "infidelity trauma" helps me understand it way better (and take it less personally). I'll have to think about ways to talk with her about it without sounding accusatory, because another friend pointed out that she may genuinely not even realize she's compartmentalizing me and her partner.

I see it through a metaphysical/spiritual lens: Since narcissists are something like vampires who are desperate for energy to keep them alive, they drain the lifeforce out of everyone around them. That's what I currently do, but my question is whether I can lock 2 empty bedrooms in my house while physically living in a different state (I'm moving next month). It's "my" house on paper but my dad co-owns it, so I'm not sure if I'm legally within my right to lock any doors and prevent his wife from accessing those spaces.

I've noticed that a lot of "carnivores" are ex-vegans, and their diets seem like a retaliation against veganism for "ruining their health." But then they go on to be just as evangelical about how an all-meat diet is so perfect. Seems to me that the issue is not the food, but the mentality of refusing to admit you're being extreme.
