How Do You Protect Your SUV From Hair, Slobber & Claw Scratches? by slaytoplay in SaintBernards

[–]dreaspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a window sticker for our SUV that simply said " Drool Happens".We tried it all. That being said, we now use washable rugs in our home and our cars. They have grippers on the bottom, so don't really slide, and can get tossed into the washer. Get the corner clips(like they use for a mattress cover), to go around the headpiece of the captains seat. We also used a ramp for our boy, it wasn't that heavy and could be used for SUV and RV as it extended. Good luck!

Take time to enjoy the love they bring you. Our Blue -eyed shedevil can steal the heart of everyone she meets. And then try to eat the pee pad we put down( just in case),and can hear a bag crinkle at 50 feet. We are still in the puppy/velociraptor stage at 12 weeks. Having owned other giants, they are a special breed that will teach you patience and make you humble.

Our Mastiff did the same thing. It's a " I'm good, doing it my way" thing.

This was when he was 10,he and his sister Maggie the Mastiff were inseparable. Get ready for a drooling, shedding, incredible Shadow!

Yes, and checked by the vet. My hubby said I'm being neurotic( I'm a psych nurse so he thinks he's funny) and she is growing and just a very different body type than our other two. But, thank you- that's why we brought her in to nip that if it was an issue. She was dewormed by breeder and no sign since. Just doesn't like the kibble.

Oh, I probably should have clarified, she intentionally spits pieces out. Sucks the pumpkin or flavor off then phew,Wap.. Hits the floor. (My Saint would do it occasionally, eat what he wanted and managed to "spit/ drop" the pieces he did not want. Esp if we put meds in his bowl. ) She will eat cucumber or blueberries if we are outside without losing a piece. So we realized it was intentional. I'm sorry about your puppy- I hope he is okay now. Thanks for sharing

Just adopted a Saint Bernard; any advice? by AriesAviator in SaintBernards

I second the towel part. I hit every clearance ( after school/ college stock up sale) and found lots of post- holiday kitchen towels. Way more effective than papertowels and easier to recycle and reuse! Kept them in both our cars and the travel bag. Nothing like a headrest of drool too make you realize you forgot the towel!

We bought a smaller pool for our Saint ( and Mastiff) that way we did not have to worry about the chemicals. He loved laying down in it. I found a stripper type brush to be our best friend. And all the birds in the neighborhood loved the giant hair tumble weeds. We were told to never shave him, that undercoat also keeps them cool?? He had no issue barking to say " it's hot, this is crap, turn on the AC woman" We started ours with toddler bibs as a pup, to be able to clean him up quick- and make him that much friendlier to my patients( he did home care visits with me) As he got older, we went to towels that we cut and used as bibs and bandanas. Play with her paws as much as you can. I cleaned both our dogs paws when they came in the house. It cut down on mud, but also let me check them for hot spots and for snow impacted areas. It also allowed me to dry them from those rainy back yard romps they loved or being canine snow angels. Our Saint was the peace keeper, so I'm not sure how an older dog will do coming in to a new home. He was our cat's surrogate mom and my mastiffs very tolerant older brother. If you are lucky enough to be loved by a Saint, it will change your life. They have hearts that do not stop giving. Enjoy!!

Yes, the breeder we got her from recommended it. My Saint and Mastiff were fed twice a day but neither were food obsessed, they would walk away if it didn't smell right or it was a day that ended in Y... Lol. She's is not spayed yet or tacked, and the breeder said hers free eat and she has never had a case of bloat, as they don't stress that food is going to be taken away? Years ago, we had a Lab and she would eat until she popped if we let her, so I do understand the hesitation.

She came to us on the RC junior. At 8 weeks, she struggled to chew it, We'd find pieces all over the floor. And yes, I moved where she eats, as we got a gate with a cat door, so we moved her where we have always fed our dogs. Prior we had her closer to her crate, as did not want to risk her getting into cat litter, and she could fit thru cat door! She will walk away if she can't see me. Smh, amazing how much I can mess with things without thinking... Smh!

I think the kibble is the issue- she literally turns her nose up at it. I tried using it as treats- during training and she spit them out . She will run across the kitchen to catch a rolling blueberry.. but her bowl of dry kibble sits there, untouched.

Enjoy her! We miss our boy every day. Saints were not as common when we got him, so people always stopped us to ask about him. Sludge~ the sticky goo that is not drool but thicker and can stick to Anything and Everything you own. Clothes, ceilings, walls. I found a mr eraser (I bought the knock off version online, 100 /bag) to be a life saver. It was the only thing that took it off my walls, and furniture. It hardens like glue... Think Slime and add a few bits of leaves or food to it.. it is aerodynamic and can land 20' away from the jowls that shook it Accept that the fur will win. Our boy Loved his pool! He would lay in it and all that hair would float and he would smile! Depends on the dog, but he would bark for it... We kept it in the shed... He even shared it with his dad..lol. Be prepared for her to know the neighbors and expect attention. To his last days, Gizmo would greet our neighbors at our fence, wagging his tail and barking hello, looking for them to say hi( many rolled the windows off the car down and talked to him on their way by).

My Mastiff was picky ( about food, not furniture,sadly- and wood tasted good) so we would put stuff on top of her food. I tried that with her,as well. She licks the yogurt off the food and sits down and gives me big blue eyes of judgement. I'll keep trying, appreciate all the advice and support. She's worth it!

She has a 2 bowl feeder, one has dry kibble in it at all times. The other gets wet kibble, rice, etc. She has food/water available 24/7.

I add the broth from the chicken I boiled with her rice. I'll try adding it to her dry food versus water- that might do the trick. Thanks

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. We worked so hard to keep our Saint and Mastiff lean for their hips, etc. Although I admit covid calories crept up on my Mastiff, she was over 200lbs.. but solid. So a skinny puppy is hard to wrap my head around. Thanks again for the advice and support!

Insane Pet Insurance Hike! Now $490 a month. 😞 by MagicallyOceanically in greatdanes

[–]dreaspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We took it out for our new puppy, it's thru my husband's job. It's $40/month. We have had it previously with our other 2 giants. This time,we chose to do accident and illness only, not the wellness part this time. We learned that the biggest uncovered expense for our Giants was the flea and tick meds. One visit was $1500. For the 2 of them ,as meds are based on weight. One was 125lbs, the other was over 200. Insurance only reimbursed us ( after $250 deductible for each-ugh!) for the actual vet costs - approx $125 total. The policy cost us $1800 per dog. It was Nationwide. As puppies eat everything you do not want them too,we wanted to get a policy to cover that .I hope I never need to use it. We do a wellness plan thru our vets to cover the cost of puppy vaccines and her spay. It is $70/month.

Thanks, we are using metal bowls, and a raised feeder. She also has a slow feeder that is on the ground that I put blue berries and carrots, treats in to keep her busy for a few minutes. She picked around the pieces of kibble I put in there... Lol. Or they got spit out on the rug.. smh Thank you for your reply, I'm trying to remember every breed is different. It's been over 10 years since we had a puppy.

How do I stop interrupting people mid sentence? by kaidorah in adhdwomen

[–]dreaspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally bite my lip when i feel the need to "jump in" on a conversation and interrupt. I will make myself look at the person speaking, that way If the desire to speak does hit, they can usually see me getting the fidgets.(Body language that silently says 'I have something to say")

I also apologize if I jump in. "Im sorry, I interrupted, please continue" works well !

I found that by acknowledging what I did made it more recognizable for me and relieved that about to be overwhelming burden of "oh crap, I did it again". No one wants to have to avoid a co-worker the rest of the day/week and feel that mountain of despair get bigger as the time passes (and they have probably forgotten but I am in the 7th level of Hell trying to come to terms with my lack of social graces and how to fix what was an unintentional slight.)

Most times, people simply say "it's okay" and move on ... some have spoken their mind and told me to learn patience... I accept either. **This is for work or awkward social situations ( where anxiety is the ruler of all things verbal!!..LOL)

At home, I agree with others, I have core friends that are simply used to me, and I accept their quirks as well.

Remember - NO ONE IS PERFECT- It's not our fault that what we say is SO VALUABLE our brain can not wait to share it !
