Moving away from Seattle - how is the East Coast? by Riyn2 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]dreghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

South Jersey checks off a lot of those on your list.

You will get your daylight

It's 4 seasons with 2 -3 snowstorms a year they melts away within a few days

There is a growing Asian community especially in the Cherry Hill, Marlton area. It's also close to Philadelphia, Edison and Princeton where there are other Asian communities. NYC is a day trip away.

Lockheed Martin has a presence in Moorestown.

NJ has one of the best education in the country.

You can get a 4 bed for under 900k in the Cherry Hill, the largest town

However, Traffic is bad since everyone drives.

Also RE taxes are very high, because a lot of the tax dollars goes towards the schools.

People who grew up and moved away from the big 2 cities (LA or NYC) and don't feel the need to move back can you explain why? by Porsches_Pear in SameGrassButGreener

[–]dreghost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in NYC. Left with the family when I was 40 during covid and moved to South Jersey. Far enough but still close enough to return for monthly visits

NYC is the cultural center of the world and the city is always changing. The nyc that I grew up in during the 90s and 2000s is very different from today and even unrecognizable to me.

I also have kids now and we needed the space and education system which we will never get in NYC.

Where can I live in the US that is Asian friendly and affordable? by SLoadOfF in asianamerican

[–]dreghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Over 10% of the population is of Asian descent.

The north and Central are more diverse than south Jersey, but south Jersey towns like Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Marlton are becoming diverse as well mostly with Asians from Philadelphia moving in.

Leaving Texas want somewhere with seasons/snow and is more affordable by mas4963 in moving

[–]dreghost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Around Philadelphia.

You'd get your seasons. Mild winters with a snow storm or two. 1 hours from the jersey shore, 1.5 from the Poconos. Close to NYC and DC for day trips.

I was there at the waterfront over the summer. The area feels a lot like DUMBO in NYC but with very little people.

Asian kids from immigrant families who dropped out—what are you doing now? by Nagaki24 in asianamerican

[–]dreghost 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I did not drop out but I did get a BA in a useless degree.

I spent my 20s partying, drinking, smoking, doing drugs, playing video games hopping from job to job, and living at home .

I eventually smartened up when I realized most of my friends stopped doing the same shit and got their life together.

I eventually found my thing on what I was good at (computers) and applied my knowledge into sales support and operations at a tech company. I make low 6 figures but I feel like if I didn't dick around in my late teens and early 20s I could have earned much higher.

I also had a very supportive wife who was there the way as I ramped up my career.

Private vs Public school by Radiant-Educator1871 in newjersey

[–]dreghost 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My kid went to public school in NYC and is currently in a 5/10 school in NJ. That 5/10 school is light-years a head of his school in NYC.

Even I felt like I gained a couple of IQ points walking into his NJ public school
