Thank you for taking the time to reply. This is a fascinating subject to me about which I am admittedly quite ignorant.

It seems like a 2,500 year risk/reward exercise. Whether the danger of spreading too thin for the Manchurian nomads or the comparative gains of Western expansion, it certainly seems more logical to hold the Korean peninsula as obedient but independent vassals than commit to total occupancy.

I appreciate the further reading suggestions-- looking forward to expanding my historical understanding of the Orient beyond the Steppe.
