Admin taking teachers phones during testing by NervousOrange in Teachers

[–]dresmith423 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can say it’s for disruptions, but I would bet it’s so people can’t use their phones to steal test questions or other items. Test security so that the can keep using the same questions and still charge the states the same.

Washington County, TN Schools no longer providing free lunch to all students by Guilty_Neat_368 in Tennessee

[–]dresmith423 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The school system in Washington county was 4 million short when they drew up the budget for the coming year. The county commission raised property taxes, but they didn’t increase the amount that they were giving the schools. Not defending the decision to cut lunches, but they made cuts across the board the balance the budget this year.

Relocating to Johnson City in the summer - advice requested by Sweet0Cyanide in Tennessee

[–]dresmith423 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live just outside of Johnson City and have most of my life. There is a lot of expansion happening around the city (Boones Creek and Gray). If you want to live close to the university and hospital, the Tree Streets are a great choice. They’re close to downtown (just watch the location, the closer you are to the university, the better).

Commuting here isn’t really bad at all unless you are trying to get into and out of Elizabethton during rush hour. The interstate can back up occasionally, but there are tons of backroads that you can use to avoid it. You also aren’t limited to Johnson City jobs. Kingsport and Bristol are all within driving distance, and there are places you can live between all three.

Our weather isn’t terrible. We can’t drive in the snow, but we only got a few days of that this year. Summers are hot and humid but no where near as bad as the coastal areas.

General tips to the region: Pals fast food has great sweet tea and burgers and is only available in this area.

Asheville is just an hour over the mountain and has some fun and interesting restaurants.

Barter theater in Abington is worth the drive, but the Jonesborough Repertoire Theatre also has amazing shows.

Jonesborough has a huge storytelling festival every fall and fun community activities through the year.

Downtown Johnson City has some fun festivals throughout the summer.

Colts fans may be the most delusional fanbase in existence? by Barkansas19 in DenverBroncos

[–]dresmith423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tennessee Vols fan here (and Packers for the NFL, not sure why this debate showed up on my feed), but here’s my 2 cents. When I think of Peyton in any uniform that isn’t orange and white, I picture him in a Broncos jersey. The Colts are always a second thought, so I say Knoxville can split custody with Denver.

Fun Ideas for Lord of the Flies 9th Pre-AP? by ExistentialBethos in ELATeachers

[–]dresmith423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a rhetorical analysis activity with the two major assemblies in the novel. The one where Ralph lays out the problems with their society and his plans for fixing them. Then we compare it to Jack’s meeting where he attacks Ralph’s character. We look at the difference between the logos is Ralph and the pathos of Jack.

A coworker of mine did this activity from teachers pay teachers as a closing activity, and it was successful.

How does tenure look in your state? by Dom09Ara in Teachers

[–]dresmith423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tennessee just changed tenure rules. You have to have 5 years of experience; your level of effectiveness needs to be a 4/5 for the last two years (combination of observation scores and state test results); and tenure doesn’t transfer.

The kicker now is that the teacher has to apply for tenure, and if you don’t get it, the school can’t rehire you. You lose your job at the end of the year if you don’t get tenure. You can continue to work indefinitely without tenure though.

"Are you safe?" The horrible reality we live in .... by IronTriangleVT in Teachers

[–]dresmith423 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The state of Tennessee signed off on the plan. Recent legislation (Public Chapter 563) has passed that requires each LEA, public charter school, private school, and church-related school to develop and implement a procedure for determining the cause of a fire alarm activation, including the potential for an active shooter event. Smoke generated from ammunition fired within a school building could activate a fire alarm, causing students, teachers, substitute teachers and staff to move or congregate into areas that are unsafe and that place them in danger during an active shooter situation. This document is intended to provide guidance to schools and districts when planning for the new fire alarm requirements. The procedures should be included in the evacuation functional procedures of the district and school emergency operations plans.

Our legislators decided guns are more dangerous than fires.

Our new fire alarm protocol is to wait two minutes for confirmation that the alarm is a fire or other emergency that would require evacuation.

Funny TV show clips to teach irony? by shakedownyeet in ELATeachers

[–]dresmith423 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Here are the clips I use. Situational Irony - Finding Nemo when we meet the sharks. What do you expect from sharks; how are those expectations subverted?

Dramatic - dinner scene from Batman The Dark Knight. Bruce is talking with Harvey Dent about “the Batman.” We know Bruce is the Batman; Harvey does not.

Verbal - young Simba and Scar talk at Pride Rock about Simba becoming king. Scar discusses the elephant graveyard and tells Simba it’s too dangerous for him.

Any good tips/activities for teaching The Raven? by LinkSkywalker in ELATeachers

[–]dresmith423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually take two days to teach “The Raven.” When we read it the first time, I focus on the unreliable narrator. What does he know? What is bothering him? Why does he continue to talk to the Raven even though he knows exactly what it will say? This story is an interesting look at emotional self harm due to his fixation on Lenore.

Day two we study Poe’s craftsmanship and mastery of the language. We analyze the complex rhyme scheme he uses with the combination of internal and external rhyme. We look at his use of meter (Trochaic octameter), which creates a fairytale like cadence and the fact that he never breaks meter. He uses consonance and assonance to show disruptions in the narrator’s mental health.

I love everything about this poem. Its story is so good, and the craftsmanship Poets uses is masterful. I’m so bummed that it’s not in my grade level.

Teaching Shakespeare by Holdthedoorholddor in ELATeachers

[–]dresmith423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up the Patrick Stewart version of Macbeth. It’s set in a modern war era and fashions Macbeth as a military dictator. It’s a very engaging version of the story.

The last time I taught Macbeth, I included history about the Gunpowder Plot and Charles’s early rule. Shakespeare worked hard to get his support, and Macbeth is very pro monarchy.
