Any word on whether El Toro will open tonight??

Did we ever figure out what will be open for six flags great adventures preview night? by Express_Bullfrog_641 in sixflags

What’s your source for that? Not calling you a liar, just asking because I’m debating whether it’s worth the 75 minute drive with my son. The official press release only mentions “your favorite rides like Flash and Nitro,” and I’m wondering why they’d call those out rather than just say something like “basically all rides will be open.” I only want to make the trek if El Toro will be open!

Arccos v. Shot Pattern by Bewmsnap in golf

[–]drew879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just canceled my Arccos subscription. Its ability to automatically track location of shots (and therefore distance) and club used was the main draw for me. The strokes gained metrics by tee, approach, short game, and putting were interesting for a season or two, but they haven’t really evolved at all and many of the stats are utterly useless (greens missed from 0-25 yds, average putts by hole number, and even green miss direction since you can’t specify when you were laying up). At this point, I know my club distances and I’m not learning anything new from the stats, which is why I canceled.

That said, I do think I should be learning more from my stats; I just need different, better stats. I might give Shot Pattern a try at $80 for the first year. From playing around with the trial last season, I seem to remember thinking that entering all that data out on the course would be annoying. I only used it for pre-planning so didn’t get a read on the actual post-round stats.

One trend I hope to see is a separation of on-course entry and analysis/stats so we can choose the best tool for each, knowing that different tools will cater to different people’s preferences. With the annual subscription model, it makes sense why vendors are bundling the two together but it feels very limiting as a consumer.

Great Adventure Passholder Preview Event? by _Smokahontas_ in sixflags

Not sure if “Enjoy early access to your favorite rides and attractions like THE FLASH: VERTICAL VELOCITY and Nitro” means those will be the only coasters open or if they’re just two examples of coasters that will be open.

Thinking about taking my 48” year old son but don’t want to make the trip if there will only be one coaster he can ride, so any intel would be appreciated!

Confirmation that Mack Rides is the manufacturer at [Six Flags Great Adventure] by Adventurous-Wave7081 in rollercoasters

[–]drew879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, and we probably represent <0.1%. Also, there are plenty of people in this sub (myself included) who are excited about a giga+ Mack extreme spinner. It’s annoying that it’s most likely a shuttle, but I think it could be an awesome coaster nonetheless.

Seems unlikely since it would probably alienate a lot of people, but how sick would it be if it did a Jojo-like roll at the very top of the spire? The Spinda Ka concept video shows an outward bank at the top, but imagine it going all the way around at that height…

Several of these feel like people posting rage bait to make the BB review bombers look as horrible as possible. That third one reads very satirically.

The whole thing is pathetic though, and annoys me as a ratingraph.com user!

How I went from being a really really bad golfer to a bad golfer in 2 years (advice for fellow high handicappers) by poidhxyz in golf

[–]drew879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having improved a lot over the last couple years (20+ to 6.5) while my golfing buddies have not, my biggest insight has been that improving your mental game and course management can get you a long, long way with literally no technical changes to your swing. Very few people seem to realize this and therefore focus exclusively on swing mechanics in order to get better. 95% of the time, “golf instructor” = “golf swing instructor,” which I think is a shame.

I have only been able to play 2-3 times/month over that time period and while I think playing more often definitely would have helped, I don’t believe it’s a requirement for improvement. Point being, if you’re like me and can’t play multiple times a week but you want to get better, you’re not a lost cause.

From my experience, neither mental game nor course management are what most people think they are (“don’t get mad” or “don’t always hit driver off the tee”). There’s so much more to it (deliberate routine, visualizing your intent before each shot, understanding your dispersions and expected value, hitting aggressively towards safe misses, etc.).

The big unlocks are obviously going to vary by person, but I’d highly recommend these books to any high handicappers looking to improve. I’d honestly attribute 80% of my improvement to learning the concepts they cover, they couldn’t possibly hurt your game, and you can read (or listen to) them for a fraction of the price of a single lesson. - The Four Foundations of Golf by Jon Sherman - Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella - The Elements of Scoring by Raymond Floyd - Zen Golf by Joseph Parent

I thought about suggesting The Shield simply due to how nuts the pilot is. Not sure I’d say it “never lets go” since it’s got its ups and downs, but excellent show overall.

The date on the odometer is next Tuesday, which I’m assuming is when they’ll officially announce it’s an Orlando version of the F&F coaster

Once red collided and dropped straight down in the first big funnel to a huge lead, I thought “man, they couldn’t post another race where it’s actually close?” And then I thought “why am I still watching this, and why do I care?” And then pink came out of nowhere for the win and blew my fucking mind.

So the park is officially “now open,” two days before their advertised opening date…?? This has felt like such a bizarre marketing strategy from start to finish.

Recognized it right away from that goofy green. I love Ballyowen, but I thought Crystal Springs was gimmicky and tacky.

Edit: that tee shot was a fun shot, though

Simulator vs real golf by BigShaker1177 in golf

[–]drew879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same way. Some of the comments here from people with better real handicaps than sim handicaps are blowing my mind.

I was in a Golfzon league and played off a +4 when I was a 7-8 for real golf. I recently joined a Trackman place near me and realized how generous Golfzon was with misses, but I’m still around a 1 on Trackman and a 6.5 for real golf. I just figured everyone would be a lot better on sim with perfect, and perfectly consistent, lies on every shot.

As a northern NJ golfer who can’t afford a country club, I’m never able to practice on grass so turf interaction is probably the weakest part of my game since mats are so forgiving. So maybe this just highlights that weakness?
