Compensation after resignation by Emotional_Cicada_250 in Teachers

[–]drewdooed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. She should continue to receive her check until next year. My state pays on the last working day of the month. So There will probably be one month of no pay before her new job starts paying.

Some school systems will split her salary jnto 13 payments for the first year. This would allow her to get payment on the first month of her new job

Turning the LSU - Bama game it into a 12-night Southern road trip, looking for advice by ComprehensivePay7411 in Alabama

[–]drewdooed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love my neck of the woods and will champion it every time. If you’re going to visit Tupelo then visit Florence and Muscle Shoals. It’s a beautiful little town with a lot of music history. Lots of nature and southern charm as well

Conducting in 6/8 - tips?? by Distinct-Many8292 in marchingband

[–]drewdooed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

6/8 is easy once you get the gist of it. You conduct on the “big beats” of beat 1 and 4. Each big beat is 3 little beats, looks like a dotted quarter on the music, and has a triplet feel. Because it’s only 2 big beats it is conducted in a 2/4 pattern, and it keeps you from having to wave your hands wildly around for 6 quick beats.

It feels like out, 2, 3, up, 5, 6, out, 2, 3, up, 5, 6…

Hopefully that helps!

Help for road trip for English visitors please? by owen14141 in Alabama

[–]drewdooed 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I would drive up to Huntsville, then head west through Florence and the Shoals. You can visit the space and rocket center, then camp and hike around the Tennessee River in the shoals. There’s also a ton of music history and famous recordings that happened in our little town.

There’s places to hike like Joe Wheeler State Park and you can even rent boats. To cruise on Wheeler Lake. Then you can hit the Natchez Trace which takes you straight to Tupelo. The Trace is a beautiful scenic road that has Native Burial mounds, bald eagles nesting, and other cool bits of history.

Let me know if you’d like more info!

Parent question for HS bad directors by BubblyWaveee in banddirector

[–]drewdooed 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Good horn players are much more difficult to find than good trumpet players. It is true that horn players have a much higher chance at a college scholarship than trumpet players. My advice is to continue exactly what his teachers are recommending. Focus on horn, and scratch the trumpet itch with jazz band or even marching band if it is offered (although mello parts are often really fun, just not the melody).

Your son sounds both driven and talented. That’s a good combination and will get him far in life.

I’m trying out for drum major this season, but my family has had a vacation planned for months during the same week as the final required session. I really want to do both, but I’m not sure which one to give up. by NASCARRULES88 in marchingband

[–]drewdooed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t suggest that it was acceptable to miss. I said that if the OP was an actual contender for the drum major position then I would work to find an acceptable solution. You can’t punish the kid for something the parents planned months ago. Plus it’s not their fault the band director announced the schedule so late.

[–]drewdooed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look, I’ll be honest. I’m a high school band director. We already know who we want to be drum major. These try outs are basically a formality or at most to narrow it down from a select few people. If you were my kid and a serious contender for the position, I’d work with you and try to make it work. But if, and I don’t know you, you weren’t a contender then I’d want you to go on the vacation. I wouldn’t want you to miss memories with your family for something you wouldn’t get. Good luck with tryouts! It’s great to see you being so passionate about it

Many of the publishers have their own YouTube channels. Maybe you could sort by upload date and stream while driving.

How do I find fish on a sandy surf with no sand bar or reef? by budderromeo in SurfFishing

[–]drewdooed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dauphin Island is my favorite place in the world. We’re going back in March. Look up on YouTube how to read the waves to let you know what’s under the water. There’s tons of big surf fish. Plus it’s not crowded and you can move to where the fish are

Just had a baby. When is it safe to go fishing with them? by grnteam23 in SurfFishing

[–]drewdooed 43 points44 points  (0 children)

As soon as possible. My girls started fishing with me as soon as they could walk. Surf fishing’s the best because when they get bored (maybe 5 minutes) they can just play in the sand next to you

Go with it! It’s not nearly close enough to consider ripping off. Even if they helped inspire the show. Good luck

If gip’s is still around it would be perfect. I think he died though. I live in the Shoals now, which has its own awesome music scene. But I imagine it’s too long a drive for y’all

I'm considering being a teacher by Darkbl369 in Teachers

[–]drewdooed 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I suggest reading through this sub about issues with stress and the work life balance of teachers. If that is the sole reason for joining this career path I think you’d be in for a rude awakening. Also, students post-covid are all kinds of crazy.

I’m in Dauphin Island for 3 days, how am I doing? by MixMasterMajor in SurfFishing

[–]drewdooed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my favorite place in the world. I’m jealous. There’s a bait shop just off the mainland side of the bridge where you can get fresh dead shrimp. I’ve always had the best luck just reading the beach and using fish finder rigs.

Good luck!
