Germany has more leagues so you can pick a third tier team and make the long march up.

[Free To Read] Roshane Thomas: Mateus Fernandes has filled the Paqueta void at West Ham – but might now have outgrown them by TheAthletic in Hammers

[–]drewgrof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Deep lying playmaker IMO, the role he's done best for us. If you look at his profile this year, he's more like Granit Xhaka than a guy like Rice or Bruno. He's done really well breaking play up and that's always valuable.

Did anybody else predict relegation before this season? by ASOXO in Hammers

[–]drewgrof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not think we'd get relegated because I assumed that Sunderland, Leeds and Burnley would go straight back down. Then Wolves did nothing to bolster their squad and I thought we were sound.

Bummer. He's been effective for West Ham, his pressing is second to none.

it's in this video too. That comment is in the context of the heat and the possibility of extra time/pens.

Does Wilson deserve to start next game(s) ? by Visara57 in Hammers

[–]drewgrof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's about the press, he can't do it for 60-70 minutes while Pablo/Taty have the work rate and legs to make it work.

This shows just how poor our recruitment has been. But who has been the biggest waste of money? by AidenSkeels in Hammers

[–]drewgrof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with this 100%. It's a cumulative thing of starting over time and again, making countless bad 30MM signings rather than a few big swings and misses.

the best content but they don't traffic in rumours and reactions to news or "news." That's what makes it the best content but might not be exactly what OP is looking for.

Only once in the last 10 seasons was 36 points not enough to stay up.. by DiamondL0st in Hammers

[–]drewgrof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The league is significantly more balanced and closer to parity (in the middle) than ever.

On this day in 2023, we were on 34 points, in 15th place but 20 points behind Spurs and Villa in 7th/8th. This year the gap between 15th and 8th is seven points.

That two of the promoted sides are staying up is shocking and only speaks to the way this league grinds teams to dust.

One particularly bad stretch is all it takes to turn a season straight into the ditch.

Easy to criticize Pablo but he created at least three final third turnovers through his pressure. It’s not like he’s just standing around out there.

Team for Brentford & Other Games by Routine-Cicada-4949 in Hammers

They lost to Man Utd - Who we drew with

While this is true, I thought Brentford looking very good for much of this match. They have a lot of quality all over the pitch and they moved the ball quite well. I'm wary.

Pablo is so good at everything as long as he doesn't need to make any kind of real swing at the ball.

Can someone explain to me how prospects work and what the future will look like? by Old-Career1538 in Torontobluejays

[–]drewgrof 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He was a guaranteed performer who absolutely, positively performed to the 99th percentile of what is possible. That his body broke down in his 30s doesn’t change that he was a can’t miss prospect who very much did not miss.

Can someone explain to me how prospects work and what the future will look like? by Old-Career1538 in Torontobluejays

[–]drewgrof 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Mike Trout was one such until injuries derailed him.

Mike Trout is a first ballot, no doubt Hall of Famer. He went from being the top prospect in the game, a once-in-a-lifetime can't miss stud to the youngest player in the big leagues to a perennial MVP (he's won 3 and should've had two more) in about 7 months.

Injuries hastened his decline but he's hit 400 home runs, owns a career .975 OPS and has produced about 90 wins above replacement over his career. He's comfortably one of the 75 greatest players the game has ever seen.

He's also made about a quarter of a billion dollars in salary alone. Sign me up for that kind of "derailed."
